Book excerpt: Recent studies have increasingly downplayed, and in a few cases even wholly denied, the influence of Martin Luther's theology of Law and Gospel on early English evangelicals such as William Tyndale. The impact of a late medieval Augustinian renaissance, Erasmian Humanism, the Reformed tradition, and Lollardy have all but eclipsed the more central role once attributed to Luther. Whiting reexamines these claims with a thorough reevaluation of Luther's theology of Law and Gospel in its historical context spanning twenty-five years, something entirely lacking in all previous studies. Based on extensive research in the primary sources, with acute attention to the larger historical narrative and in dialogue with secondary scholarship, Whiting argues that scholars have often oversimplified Luther's theology of Law and Gospel and have thus wrongly diminished his very significant, even principal, influence upon first-generation evangelicals William Tyndale, John Frith, and Robert Barnes during the English Reformation of the 1520s and 30s.

NEW EDITIONS OF LUTHER'S WORKS It was of the greatest importance, when in 1883 the Prussian secretary of the interior allowed himself to be influenced by Koestlin and others, to guarantee the means necessary for a new critical edition of Luther's works, and to entrust its leadership to the already mentioned Knaake, who was to work in connection with a special commission created for this purpose. Even though at that time no one had a true conception of the wealth of material that has been discovered in the course of time, yet, now a storehouse was held in readiness for all new findings, and the possibility that the work would remain uncompleted through lack of funds was ruled out. It will ever remain a splendid page in the history of the House of Hohenzollern that it called upon students of theology, history and German culture and supported so generously their united endeavors toward completing a national edition of Luther that was commensurate with his importance. And it was a true sign of the religious as well as of the national bent of mind that prompted church and science, city and nobility, authorities and individuals to stand together and guarantee the production and sale of this work. In the proclamation of 1883 it was said: "The great national memorial whose early stages should adorn the coming fete day can not be what it should be unless all of Protestant Germany cheerfully does its part. Book excerpt: Luther's theology and practice have inspired and continue to inspire so many across confessional and even religious alignments worldwide, or else excite those for whom he displays a coveted, untamed audacity in living out convictions; it is the fabric, the texture that makes Luther a figura with the capability of being transfigured. Luther's theology--his view of language and understanding of creation, incarnation, the cross; his affirmation of freedom from ecclesial, economic, and/or political encroachments; his eschatology, and so forth--is seen in a new light in societies in which modernization does not necessarily mean secularization and the spirit is not set in dual opposition to things material. The dispute as to whether Luther is a late medieval theologian or a beacon of modernity is rendered largely superfluous when the Reformer is read and interpreted in contexts that do not share the peculiar cultural and political history of Europe, its orthodoxies, its pietisms, its enlightenments, and its secularisms. Transfiguring Luther lifts up and presents the significance of the Reformer--his figure as it is transfigured into diverse contexts, absorbing new contents instead of the traditional bastions that are remarkably in tune with the spirit of the Reformation, thus rekindling it.
