Book Ghost Work

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary L. Gray
  • Publisher : Eamon Dolan Books
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 1328566242
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Ghost Work written by Mary L. Gray and published by Eamon Dolan Books. This book was released on 2019 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A startling exposé of the invisible human workforce that powers the web--and how to bring it out of the shadows. Hidden beneath the surface of the internet, a new, stark reality is looming--one that cuts to the very heart of our endless debates about the impact of AI. Anthropologist Mary L. Gray and computer scientist Siddharth Suri unveil how the services we use from companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Uber can only function smoothly thanks to the judgment and experience of a vast human labor force that is kept deliberately concealed. The people who do 'ghost work' make the internet seem smart. They perform high-tech, on-demand piecework: flagging X-rated content, proofreading, transcribing audio, confirming identities, captioning video, and much more. The shameful truth is that no labor laws protect them or even acknowledge their existence. They often earn less than legal minimums for traditional work, they have no health benefits, and they can be fired at any time for any reason, or for no reason at all. An estimated 8 percent of Americans have worked in this 'ghost economy,' and that number is growing every day. In this unprecedented investigation, Gray and Suri make the case that robots will never completely eliminate 'ghost work' and the unchecked quest for artificial intelligence could spark catastrophic work conditions if not stopped in its tracks. Ultimately, they show how this essential type of work can create opportunity--rather than misery--for those who do it."--Dust jacket.

Book Despotism on Demand

Download or read book Despotism on Demand written by Alex J. Wood and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despotism on Demand draws attention to the impact of flexible scheduling on managerial power and workplace control. When we understand paid work as a power relationship, argues Alex J. Wood, we see how the spread of precarious scheduling constitutes flexible despotism; a novel regime of control within the workplace. Wood believes that flexible despotism represents a new domain of inequality, in which the postindustrial working class increasingly suffers a scheduling nightmare. By investigating two of the largest retailers in the world he uncovers how control in the contemporary "flexible firm" is achieved through the insidious combination of "flexible discipline" and "schedule gifts." Flexible discipline provides managers with an arbitrary means by which to punish workers, but flexible scheduling also requires workers to actively win favor with managers in order to receive "schedule gifts": more or better hours. Wood concludes that the centrality of precarious scheduling to control means that for those at the bottom of the postindustrial labor market the future of work will increasingly be one of flexible despotism.

Book Reading the Comments

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph M. Reagle, Jr.
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2015-05-01
  • ISBN : 0262328887
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Reading the Comments written by Joseph M. Reagle, Jr. and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What we can learn about human nature from the informative, manipulative, confusing, and amusing messages at the bottom of the web. Online comment can be informative or misleading, entertaining or maddening. Haters and manipulators often seem to monopolize the conversation. Some comments are off-topic, or even topic-less. In this book, Joseph Reagle urges us to read the comments. Conversations “on the bottom half of the Internet,” he argues, can tell us much about human nature and social behavior. Reagle visits communities of Amazon reviewers, fan fiction authors, online learners, scammers, freethinkers, and mean kids. He shows how comment can inform us (through reviews), improve us (through feedback), manipulate us (through fakery), alienate us (through hate), shape us (through social comparison), and perplex us. He finds pre-Internet historical antecedents of online comment in Michelin stars, professional criticism, and the wisdom of crowds. He discusses the techniques of online fakery (distinguishing makers, fakers, and takers), describes the emotional work of receiving and giving feedback, and examines the culture of trolls and haters, bullying, and misogyny. He considers the way comment—a nonstop stream of social quantification and ranking—affects our self-esteem and well-being. And he examines how comment is puzzling—short and asynchronous, these messages can be slap-dash, confusing, amusing, revealing, and weird, shedding context in their passage through the Internet, prompting readers to comment in turn, “WTF?!?”

Book excerpt: Whether you want to make an extra $100 a month or an extra $10,000, the high-level process is the same: Someone has to buy what you're selling. The money has to come from somewhere, right? (Hint: it comes from customers.) Sadly, there's an epidemic going around. The reason most entrepreneurs, wantpreneurs, and side hustlers fail is a lack of customers. If you've ever failed in your own efforts to start a business or earn money on the side, I'm guessing that was the root cause. On top of that, you're in a constant battle of not having enough hours in the day and you don't know where to focus your limited time, energy, and money. That's the bad news. The Answer The good news is you have more opportunity today to earn income in your spare time than ever before. And you don't need a killer new business idea or millions of dollars in startup capital to do it. The good news is there isn't a shortage of customers. They're out there! This book will share specifics on how to increase your earning power-on your own time, on your own terms, and without getting another job. We'll look at real-life examples of people just like you making it happen. I'm going to arm you with dozens of income-generating ideas that don't require a ton of time or money to get started. And spoiler alert: there are no get-rich-quick schemes inside. Instead, you'll learn proven strategies for tapping into the growing peer-to-peer economy to supplement your income, diversify your revenue sources, and reduce your reliance on your day job for your livelihood. Go Where the Cash Is Already Flowing Buy Buttons focuses on marketplaces that already exist, where you can put your expertise, time, and assets up for sale or rent. There are hundreds of platforms that you can add your "buy buttons" to. You don't have to build a customer base from scratch, design a website, or even worry about payment processing. Each platform already has an eager audience of buyers looking for what you have to sell. Not sure what to sell? In the 300+ platforms featured inside, you're bound to find an idea or two that's a fit. These platforms are the "gateway drugs" of entrepreneurship. They're easy to get started on, to get the high from your first sale, and to keep coming back for more. Does It Really Work? I've used the same "buy buttons" marketplace strategy over and over again for the last 15 years as an entrepreneur. Even more exciting, thousands of SideHustleNation.com readers and Side Hustle Show listeners just like you are already seeing results by implementing the strategies in this book. The common thread is they set up their businesses on pre-existing platforms that made it easy for buyers to find them and spend money with them. This book will show you exactly where and how to set up your "buy buttons" to generate hundreds or thousands of dollars a month in side income. My Guarantee I guarantee you'll find at least one "buy button" platform that you can use to generate your own job-free income stream. If you don't, just send me a note (my contact info is at the end of the book), and I'll buy the book back from you, no questions asked. Now, where else are you going to find a deal like that? Ready? Hit the Buy Now button and let's get started!

Book Write Publish Repeat

Download or read book Write Publish Repeat written by Johnny B. Truant and published by Realm & Sands. This book was released on 2014-12-14 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Write. Publish. Repeat. The No-Luck-Required Guide to Publishing In 2013, Johnny B. Truant and Sean Platt published 1.5 million words and made their full-time livings as indie authors. In Write. Publish. Repeat., they tell you exactly how they did it: how they created over 15 independent franchises across 50+ published works, how they turned their art into a logical, sustainable business, and how any independent author can do the same to build a sustainable, profitable career with their writing. Write. Publish. Repeat. explains the current self-publishing landscape and covers the truths and myths about what it means to be an indie author now and in the foreseeable future. It explains how to create books your readers will love and will want to return to again and again. Write. Publish. Repeat. details expert methods for building story worlds, characters, and plots, understanding your market (right down to your ideal reader), using the best tools possible to capture your draft, and explains proven best practices for editing. The book also discusses covers, titles, formatting, pricing, and publishing to multiple platforms, plus a bit on getting your books into print (and why that might not be a good idea!). But most importantly, Write. Publish. Repeat. details the psychology-driven marketing plan that Sean and Johnny built to shape their stories into "products" that readers couldn't help but be drawn into -- thus almost automatically generating sales -- and explores ways that smart, business-minded writers can do the same to future-proof their careers. This book is not a formula with an easy path to follow. It is a guidebook that will help you build a successful indie publishing career, no matter what type of writer you are ... so long as you're the type who's willing to do the work. What Indie Authors and Thought Leaders Are Saying: "Two of the best in the biz... A gem for aspiring authors." -- Hugh Howey "I have a pretty popular blog on self-publishing, and I've written a couple of books on the topic myself - meaning I've read a lot on the topic and come across lots of different strategies and approaches to building a loyal audience. For my money, this is the best book on self-publishing out there." -- David Gaughran "It's tough to find more honest and straight-forward marketing advice than what you'll get from these indie authors." -- Jane Friedman, former publisher of Writer's Digest "The most important book on self-publishing I've ever read.
