Book The Variations of Johannes Brahms

Download or read book The Variations of Johannes Brahms written by Julian Littlewood and published by Plumbago Books and Arts. This book was released on 2004 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variation is a fundamental musical principle, yet its most naked expression - variation form - resists all but the broadest of descriptions. This book offers listener, performer, analyst and composer an eclectic array of approaches to `Theme and Variations', including: patterns of departure and return; real versus perceived time; strategies of propulsion and closure in an intrinsically cyclic and open-ended form; the interplay of authorial voices deriving from dialogue between the `self' of variations and the `other' of their theme; critique of a theme through a set's generic references; drama and narrative achieved through textural and tonal control; and the intrinsic sound of a variation, so different from that of a freely composed work. These topics are introduced through a general survey of the form, seen through the prisms of the provenance of themes and the ideologies of sets, before being developed through close study of Brahms's variation sets and movements. Brahms was supremely aware of his place in music history and was uncommonly self-conscious in his manipulation of different techniques of composition. His variation sets - some of the most well-crafted and beloved examples - place the interplay of forms and styles at the heart of their identity. Moreover, in their stunning breadth and diversity they offer a microcosm of Brahms's entire output, a succinct revelation of his life-long concerns. Through them we marvel at his technical and poetic mastery, and journey to the heart of his creative character.

Book Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and the Frontotemporal Dementias

Download or read book Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and the Frontotemporal Dementias written by Michael J. Strong and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years, there has been an increasing recognition that syndromes of frontotemporal dysfunction (FTD) are a common occurrence in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Such syndromes may be present in as many as 60% of patients with ALS. Conversely, the occurrence of motor neuron dysfunction in patients with clinically pure frontotemporal dementia is increasingly recognized. This suggests that to some extent there are overlapping syndromes in which both ALS and FTD occur within the same individual. This volume summarizes the advances in our understanding of these two disorders, as well as the potential relationship between the two. Key topics include advances in our ability to clinically describe the frontotemporal syndromes, preclinical detection, neuroimaging, and genetics. The exploding field of new markers in neuropathology is examined, as is the role of new genetic mutations in DNA/RNA transport systems. This book is the essential reference text for this topic, and will be of interest to neurologists and neurological trainees with a clinical or research interest in the FTDs or ALS, neuropsychologists, neuropathologists, and researchers.

Book Ludwig van Beethoven 1927

Download or read book Ludwig van Beethoven 1927 written by Harvey Grace and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published in 1927, on the centenary of Beethoven’s death, as part of the Masters of Music series. The author was an established biographer of organ composers, such as The Organ Works of Bach. Attributing Beethoven’s disagreeable demeanour to his childhood, the author embarks on a passionate defence of Beethoven’s essential nobility of character, hoping to assuage the then-prevalent anti-Beethoven chill and to encourage readers to discover Beethoven anew. The volume covers an overview of Beethoven’s life, followed by his personality and an assessment of his works in an exploration of the most important characteristics of Beethoven’s works and their influence on his successors.

Download or read book Genetic Steroid Disorders written by Christa E. Flück and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase (POR) is an enzyme that is essential for multiple metabolic processes; chiefly among them are reactions catalyzed by cytochrome P450 proteins for metabolism of steroid hormones, drugs, and xenobiotics. Mutations in POR cause a complex set of disorders that often resemble defects in steroid metabolizing enzymes 17-hydroxylase, 21-hydroxylase, and aromatase. Since the initial reports of POR mutations in 2004, more than 70 different mutations and polymorphisms in the POR gene have been identified and tested for their effect on activities of several steroid and drug metabolizing P450 proteins. Mutations in POR may have variable effects on different P450 partner proteins depending on the location of the mutation. The POR mutations that disrupt the binding of cofactors have a negative impact on all partner proteins, while mutations causing subtle structural changes may lead to altered interaction with partner proteins and the overall effect may be different for each partner.
