Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is for me, as President of the Merseyside Lancashire & Cheshire Council on Alcoholism, a signal privilege to write a brief foreword to these Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. During the week experts, from the world over, in all those disciplines which have a contribution to make to the solution of the problems of alcoholism and drug dependence, surveyed recent advances in our knowledge of the aetiology, epidemiology, early recognition, management, and the social and industrial implications of these twin scourges of the contemporary scene. The discussions were most helpful and enlightening even when a wide spectrum of conflicting views and experiences were revealed. The justification for adding yet another volume to the growing literature in this field is two-fold; first, that those taking part in the conference can study at leisure and in depth the transactions of the conference; and secondly, that those who were unable to attend might benefit from the most recent views of international experts in the diverse facets of one of the major current problems in world health. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guide to Alcohol and Drug Dependence, Second Edition provides information on the recognition of alcohol misuse, on alcohol dependence among the elderly, and on outpatient withdrawal from opioids. This book emphasizes the detection and early treatment of alcohol misuse, the detoxification of drug users followed by drug-free counseling, and preventive measures. Organized into nine chapters, this edition begins with an overview of the various types of dependence-producing drugs, including morphine, cocaine, cannabis, alcohol-barbiturate, amphetamine, hallucinogen, and inhalants and volatile solvents. This text then explains the depressant actions of alcohol on the central nervous system that affects first the higher cerebral functions responsible for concern about personal behavior and for self-restraint. Other chapters consider the physical disabilities that heavy drinkers are prone to develop. The final chapter deals with the preventive measures directed against the problems presented by drugs and alcohol. This book is a valuable resource for social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, and clinical psychologists.

It suggests that whilst alcohol advertising is not a negligible influence on the abuse of alcohol, it would be wrong to assume that restricting it would reduce the level of alcohol consumption or alcohol-related problems.

Download or read book Conceptualising Public Health written by Johannes Kananen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Germanic and Nordic languages, the term for ‘public health’ literally translates to ‘people’s health’, for example Volksgesundheit in German, folkhälsa in Swedish and kansanterveys in Finnish. Covering a period stretching from the late nineteenth century to the present day, this book discusses how understandings and meanings of public health have developed in their political and social context, identifying ruptures and redefinitions in its conceptualisation. It analyses the multifaceted and interactive rhetorical play through which key concepts have been used as political tools, on the one hand, and shaped the understanding and operating environment of public health, on the other. Focusing on the blurred boundaries between the social and the medico-scientific realms, from social hygiene to population policy, Conceptualising Public Health explores the sometimes contradictory and paradoxical normative aims associated with the promotion of public health. Providing examples from Northern Europe and the Nordic countries, whilst situating them in a larger European and international context, it addresses questions such as: How have public health concepts been used in government and associated administrative practices from the early twentieth century up to the present? How has health citizenship been constructed over time? How has the collective entity of ‘the people’ been associated with and reflected in public health concepts? Drawn from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, the authors collected here each examine a particular way of understanding public health and assess how key actors or phenomena have challenged, altered or confirmed past and present meanings of the concept. Conceptualising Public Health is of interest to students and scholars of health and welfare state development from diverse backgrounds, including public health, sociology of health and illness, and social policy as well as medical, conceptual and intellectual history.

Book excerpt: This book contains the fifteen invited papers delivered at the NATO International Conference on Experimental and Behavioral Appro aches to Alcoholism, held August 28 through September 1, 1977, at the Solstrand Fjord Hotel, Os, Norway. The editors of the book were Co-Directors of that conference. As well, 65 other scientists from 12 countries in the free world presented scientific papers on ex perimental and behavioral topics of relevance to alcoholism at the meeting. A most receptive audience of almost 200 persons also par ticipated actively in the discussions which followed every invited and contributed paper. The beauty of Norway, the hospitality of the proprietors of the Sol strand Fjord Hotel, the aura of Grieg and Troldhaugen, the en thusiasm of the speakers and participants - all combined to make the conference most memorable for those who attended it. Many persons and institutions deserve special thanks for their part in the success of the conference. Among these persons are Dr.
