Download or read book Bright Light City written by Larry Gragg and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Elvis crooned "Bright light city . . . gonna set my soul on fire," he voiced and embraced the siren call of a glittering urban utopia that continues to mesmerize millions. Call it Sin City or Lost Wages, Las Vegas definitely deserves its rapturous "Viva!" Larry Gragg, however, invites readers to view Las Vegas in an entirely new way. While countless other authors have focused on its history or gaming industry or entertainment ties, Gragg considers how popular culture has depicted the city and its powerful allure over its first century. Drawing on hundreds of films, television programs, novels, and articles, Gragg identifies changing trends in the city's portraits. Until the 1940s, boosters promoted it as the "last frontier town," a place where prospectors and cowboys enjoyed liquor, women, and wide-open gambling. Then in the early 1950s commentators increasingly characterized Las Vegas as a sophisticated resort city in the desert, and ever since then journalists, filmmakers, and novelists have depicted a city largely built by organized crime and featuring non-stop entertainment, gambling, luxury, and, of course, beautiful-and available-women. In Gragg's narrative, these images form a kaleidoscope of lights, sounds, characters, and ultimately amazement about this neon oasis. In these pages, readers will meet gangsters like Bugsy Siegel, Tony Spilotro, and Lefty Rosenthal, as well as Las Vegas's most popular entertainers: Elvis Presley, Sinatra's Rat Pack, Liberace, and Wayne Newton, not to mention the Folies Bergere showgirls. And Gragg's skillful interweaving of fictional and journalistic accounts of organized crime shows just how mutually reinforcing they have become over the years. Vegas will always make people's eyes light up as bright as the Strip, witness the new TV show Vegas or the recent film The Hangover. For everyone entranced by its glitter and glamour, Bright Light City is a must read boasting color photos and bursting with insider details: an eclectic blend of stories, people, sights, and sounds that together make up this desert city's extraordinary appeal.

Book My Way

  • Author : Paul Anka
  • Publisher : St. Martin's Press
  • Release : 2013-04-09
  • ISBN : 1250035201
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book My Way written by Paul Anka and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A teen idol of the 1950s who virtually invented the singer/songwriter/heartthrob combination that still tops pop music today, Paul Anka rocketed to fame with a slew of hits-from "Diana" to "Put Your Head on my Shoulder"-that earned him a place touring with the major stars of his era, including Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly. He wrote Holly's last hit, and just missed joining the rocker on his final, fatal plane flight. Anka also stepped in front of the camera in the teen beach-party movie era, scoring the movies and romancing their starlets, including Annette Funicello. When the British invasion made his fans swoon for a new style of music-and musician--Anka made sure he wasn't conquered. A rapier-canny businessman and image-builder who took his career into his own hands-just as he had from the very beginning, swiping his mother's car at fourteen to drive himself, underage, to his first gigs in Quebec-Anka toured the world until he could return home in triumph. A charter member of the Rat Pack, he wrote the theme music for The Tonight Show as well as his friend Frank Sinatra's anthem "My Way". By the 1970s, a multi-decade string of pop chart-toppers, including "Puppy Love" and "(You're) Having My Baby", cemented his status as an icon. My Way is bursting with rich, rollicking stories of the business and the people in Anka's life: Elizabeth Taylor, Dodi Fayed, Tom Jones, Michael Jackson, Adnan Khashoggi, Little Richard, Brooke Shields, Johnny Roselli, Sammy Davis, Jr., Brigitte Bardot, Barnum & Bailey Circus acrobats, and many more. Anka is forthcoming, funny and smart as a whip about the business he's been in for almost six decades. My Way moves from New York to Vegas, from the casino stage to backstages all over the world. It's the most entertaining autobiography of the year.

Book Christian Slater Back from the Edge

Download or read book Christian Slater Back from the Edge written by Nigel Goodall and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Slater is a screen icon in his own time and one of the world's most admired actors. This long awaited biography traces the life and career of a fascinating Hollywood player...From the late eighties onwards, Christian Slater was the embodiment of teenage cool. Films such as The Name of the Rose, Young Guns II and Pump Up the Volume became instant cult classics and ensured his status as both a teenage heartthrob and as the elite actor of his generation. His position as an A-list star was hardly diminished during the nineties, with brilliant performances in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, True Romance, Broken Arrow and Very Bad Things establishing him as a formidable force in acting. But fame and success did not always sit easily with Christian, and from his off-screen behaviour resulted a 'bad boy' reputation that has stuck with him ever since. Alcohol and drug excesses have led to numerous incidents with the law, assault charges, even a stint in jail - but through all this, Christian managed to retain a highly successful career. These personal demons, as well as Christian's intense and turbulent love affairs with the likes of Winona Ryder, Christina Applegate and Patricia Arquette, have merely added to the romance of this highly elusive and attractive individual. Yet for the man himself, the crazy lifestyle started to take its toll, and in more recent years Christian started to come to terms with the personality flaws that have plagued him throughout his family life and career. In addition to his film career, Christian's impeccable performances in a recent stage play version of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest won him the Theatregoers Choice Award for Best Actor, and with his role in Broadway's The Glass Menagerie and the West End production of Sweet Bird of Youth, his return to theatrical mainstream is in full bloom. From this incisive biography, which includes a complete filmography, emerges a complex and sometimes contradictory character, a man who has dealt with fame, love, loss and success in his own, uncompromising and inspired way. The films, the flings, the affairs, the media gossip - all are dealt with truthfully in a book as fascinating and candid as the man himself.

Book Communication and Peace

Download or read book Communication and Peace written by Julia Hoffmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the use of communication in resolving conflicts, with a focus on de-escalation and processes of peacebuilding and peace formation. From the employment of hate radio in the Rwanda genocide, to the current conflict between Russia and the Ukraine following events in the Crimea, communication and the media are widely recognized as powerful tools in conflicts and war. Although there has been significant academic attention on the relationship between the media, conflict and war, academic efforts to understand this relationship have tended to focus primarily on the links between communication and conflict, rather than on communication and peace. In order to make sense of peace it is essential to look at communication in its many facets, mediated or not. This is true within many of the diverse strands that make up the field of communication and peace, but it is also true in the sense that a holistic and interdisciplinary approach is missing from the literature. This book addresses this widely acknowledged lacuna by providing an interdisciplinary perspective on the field, bringing together relevant, but so far largely isolated, streams of research. In doing so, it aims to provide a platform for further reflection of the meaning of, and requirements for, peace in our contemporary world with a focus on de-escalation, conflict transformation, reconciliation and processes of peacebuilding – as opposed to conflict escalation or crisis intervention. This volume will be of much interest to students of peace and conflict studies, peacebuilding, media and communication studies, security studies and IR in general.
