Book Elemental Narratives

Download or read book Elemental Narratives written by Enrico Cesaretti and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past century, the Italian landscape has undergone exceedingly rapid transformations, shifting from a mostly rural environment to a decidedly modern world. This changing landscape is endowed with a narrative agency that transforms how we understand our surroundings. Situated at the juncture of Italian studies and ecocriticism and following the recent “material turn” in the environmental humanities, Elemental Narratives outlines an original cultural and environmental map of the bel paese. Giving equal weight to readings of fiction, nonfiction, works of visual art, and physical sites, Enrico Cesaretti investigates the interconnected stories emerging from both human creativity and the expressive eloquence of “glocal” materials, such as sulfur, petroleum, marble, steel, and asbestos, that have helped make and, simultaneously, “un-make” today’s Italy, affecting its socio-environmental health in multiple ways. Embracing the idea of a decentralized agency that is shared among human and nonhuman entities, Cesaretti suggests that engaging with these entangled discursive and material texts is a sound and revealing ecocritical practice that promises to generate new knowledge and more participatory, affective responses to environmental issues, both in Italy and elsewhere. Ultimately, he argues that complementing quantitative, data-based information with insights from fiction and nonfiction, the arts, and other humanistic disciplines is both desirable and crucial if we want to modify perceptions and attitudes, increase our awareness and understanding, and, in turn, develop more sustainable worldviews in the era of the Anthropocene. Elegantly written and convincingly argued, this book will appeal broadly to scholars and students working in the fields of environmental studies, comparative literatures, ecocriticism, environmental history, and Italian studies.

  • Author : I.J. Singer
  • Publisher : Other Press, LLC
  • Release : 2010-10-19
  • ISBN : 1590514025
  • Pages : 617 pages

Download or read book The Brothers Ashkenazi written by I.J. Singer and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Polish city of Lodz, the brothers Ashkenazi grew up very differently in talent and in temperament. Max, the firstborn, is fiercely intelligent and conniving, determined to succeed financially by any means necessary. Slower-witted Jacob is strong, handsome, and charming but without great purpose in life. While Max is driven by ambition and greed to be more successful than his brother, Jacob is drawn to easy living and decadence. As waves of industrialism and capitalism flood the city, the brothers and their families are torn apart by the clashing impulses of old piety and new skepticism, traditional ways and burgeoning appetites, and the hatred that grows between faiths, citizens, and classes. Despite all attempts to control their destinies, the brothers are caught up by forces of history, love, and fate, which shape and, ultimately, break them. First published in 1936, The Brothers Ashkenazi quickly became a best seller as a sprawling family saga. Breaking away from the introspective shtetl tales of classic nineteenth-century writers, I. J. Singer brought to Yiddish literature the multilayered plots, large casts of characters, and narrative sweep of the traditional European novel. Walking alongside such masters as Zola, Flaubert, and Tolstoy, I . J. Singer’s premodernist social novel stands as a masterpiece of storytelling.

Book Drama Philosophy Politics in Ancient Greece Contexts and Receptions

Download or read book Drama Philosophy Politics in Ancient Greece Contexts and Receptions written by Montserrat Reig & Xavier Riu and published by Edicions Universitat Barcelona. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is focused mainly, though not exclusively, on ancient Greek drama. It aims at examining the integration of various kinds of texts in the society and the whole body of discourses of their time, as well as in the previous and later tradition. Each chapter analyses one particular case of such integrations and is a sample of the new ways to explore the relationship between texts and literary genres. On the whole the book shows why we need to find more complex ways to describe the relationship between texts and genres in ancient Greece, and to refine the distinction between the various periods of ancient Greek culture.
