Book excerpt: From generation to generation, many Christians have adopted the habit of praying every month through all 150 psalms—songs that form the bedrock of both corporate worship and individual devotion. Through thousands of years of memorization, recitation, and singing, the people of God have found in this book a God-centered view of reality—words that put into perspective all our emotions, conflicting desires, times of suffering, and experiences of faith and doubt. In Psalms in 30 Days, Trevin Wax has adapted a centuries-old approach to reading the psalms by providing a "Morning," "Midday" and "Evening" pattern—following the Scriptural precedent for praying three times a day. This journey through the psalms, as translated in the Christian Standard Bible® (CSB), also features other songs from the Bible, as well as written prayers from faithful Christians who have gone before us. Here is a guide to praying all the psalms every month by—three times a day—lifting your eyes above your circumstances and reminding yourself that God is the blazing center of all things. Psalms in 30 Days features the highly readable, highly reliable text of the Christian Standard Bible® (CSB). The CSB stays as literal as possible to the Bible's original meaning without sacrificing clarity, making it easier to engage with Scripture's life-transforming message and to share it with others.

Book The Bible and Poetry

  • Author : Michael Edwards
  • Publisher : New York Review of Books
  • Release : 2023-08-15
  • ISBN : 1681376385
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book The Bible and Poetry written by Michael Edwards and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh, provocative look at the link between poetry and Christianity, both as it relates to the Bible itself as well as to Christian and religious life, by an accomplished scholar. The Bible is full of poems. In the Old Testament, there are the Psalms and the Song of Songs, the great exhortations and lamentations of the Prophets, and passages of poetry woven in throughout. In the New Testament, Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven with poetic epithets such as “a treasure hid in a field,” calling the Son of God “the true vine,” “the light of the world,” “the good shepherd,” and “the way, the truth, and the life.” The Gospels reverberate with allusions to the poetry of the Old Testament; the last book of all is Revelation, a visionary poem. The Bible, in other words, asks to be read poetically from start to end, and yet readers have rarely considered what that might mean, much less heeded that call. In The Bible and Poetry, the poet and scholar Michael Edwards reshapes our understanding of the Bible and religious belief, arguing that poetry is not an ornamental or accidental feature but is central to both. He speaks personally of his early, unanticipated, transformative encounters with scripture. He offers close, insightful, and resonant readings of biblical passages. Poetry, as he sees it, is the vital and necessary medium of the Creator’s word, and the truth of the Bible is not a question of precepts and propositions but of a direct experience of its poetry, its power.

Book Take God s Hand and You Will Never Walk Alone

Download or read book Take God s Hand and You Will Never Walk Alone written by Neal Ervin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death visited our family early in my youth, taking my father without warning, exacting its toll of loss and grief on me, my mom, and four siblings, leaving us all emotionally scarred. We loved Dad and grieved bitterly, surviving with feelings of desolation and sorrow as our strong family circle was forever broken; my sister, ten years old, was unable to comprehend "why Dad left her." God's Angel of Death would visit my family, inflicting the pain of sorrow and loss repeatedly, and in the years to come I would lose my mother, sister, and two younger brothers. I would later become estranged from my own family through divorce, and relocation would sever relationships, uprooting me from my career, the old familiar places and faces, plunging me back into sadness and loneliness, grim reminders of loss from the not distant past. In the middle of the storms I lost my auditory senses and had to adapt to an entirely new world that introduced fear and rejection, and at one point of my life I became fearful of dying suddenly. I realized, too much later, that I never really was ever alone; God was always with me and he was keeping me here, carrying, guiding, strengthening me through every storm, giving my life direction again, restoring me full-circle to his purpose for me--writing to tell of his love. It took a while for me to understand God's grace, how he led me through the years of stormy darkness to a relationship with him through love and mercy that is unsurpassed; and, while I am still working on life, a great part of its purpose is to share my hope and faith and attest to God's love and grace, but most of all to bear witness to the triumphant, peaceful joy of walking, talking with, and listening to God along the valleys and mountaintops of life.

Book excerpt: Beautiful verse from the world's greatest book In the concluding lines of The Song of Songs, one lover beckons the other to hurry to the "hills of spices," a place rich in fragrances and flavors, a feast for the senses. This lovely new collection invites us all to feast our senses on poetry from The Song of Songs and from many other passages of the Bible. Verses from the pages of Genesis, Exodus, Ecclesiastes, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Proverbs, Psalms, and many other biblical books are here, with the JPS English translation sitting across the page from the original biblical Hebrew. Book 30 Poems In 30 Days Every Emotion Under the Sun

Download or read book 30 Poems In 30 Days Every Emotion Under the Sun written by Jenny BE. Helgen and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 30 Poems in 30 Days is the astonishing account of a young woman's struggle yet momentarily ease and ability to add a light touch to what at times appears seemingly unbearable. _ is collection of poems takes the reader through a cascade of human sensations; with wicked wit at times - that could wake up the dead man laughing; to brutal honesty; that makes the most uptight and rigid person to move about in their chair; out of sheer captivation. 30 Poems in 30 Days encapsulates what we all, clearly to dif erent degrees, temporary feel and experience, but so rarely converse about. The author's incentive to write the book is to make poetry accessible for everyone and it doesn't require a degree in literature, or to be a bogged down poetry fanatic to comprehend the content and in best scenario - draw upon identif cation. 30 Poems in 30 Days aims to be a 'comforting oasis' to escape to when life feels to overwhelming or downright impossible; when relationship gets screwed up, when the bottle or the brownie seem more appealing than reaching for the bible for comfort; when the absence of internal safety engulfs us - that's when this book endeavors to come in and serve its purpose. "My hope with this collection is for my small babies (I have always likened the poems with "my little babies" - all with a heartbeat and a unique set of traits) to provide a Universal appeal, across borders, colors, classes and nations; to alleviate, what oftentimes feels like sheer horror - the process of facing oneself. Arguably, which is in and of itself one of the most diffi cult task set out before us." -J.H.

While I'm spending the next 30 days working on my autobiography I've managed to write a few poems on the side and threw them together for this book. All of these poems (except one) were written in a few weeks and as much as I would love to continue them I know it's time to work on the big book. I hope this book of poems changes your life some day, because I know it has changed mine. Through the cancer, malpractice and numerous other situations I'm fighting I now understand my purpose in this life, to write the Lord's word, and I am ready.
