Book The Politics of Accountability in the Modern State

Download or read book The Politics of Accountability in the Modern State written by Matthew Flinders and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: In this compelling work, Matthew Flinders examines how far alternative forms of accountability have evolved and the extent to which they remedy the current shortcomings of the parliamentary system. Adopting a pluralistic perspective, this exploration of the accountability of the core executive is clearly grounded in research methodology, thus ensuring the book makes a valid, incisive contribution to the literature. Features include: - A detailed study of the location of power and mechanisms of accountability in modern government which challenges the largely prosaic existing literature - Useful summaries of the key tensions and trends within constitutional infrastructure - A new and refreshing approach to the study of central government - Insightful critiques of major governmental policies This intriguing volume will be of interest to undergraduates, post-graduates and lecturers for courses on legislative studies, central government reform, public administration, British politics and research methods.

Book The Politics of Regulation

Download or read book The Politics of Regulation written by A. Young and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-03-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The privatization of the utilities by the Conservative governments of the 1980s and 1990s was a major shift in public policy. It was also a huge experiment in reinventing government, since the newly privatized companies were regulated by high-profile individuals. Frequently criticized and often controversial, the regulators wield enormous power over a large sector of the British economy. This book tells the story of their first fifteen years or so controlling prices, introducing competition, refereeing mergers and sometimes clashing with the government.

Book Lloyd s Register Technical Association Session 1996 1997

Download or read book Lloyd s Register Technical Association Session 1996 1997 written by Lloyd's Register Foundation and published by Lloyd's Register . This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lloyd’s Register Technical Association (LRTA) was established in 1920 with the primary objective of sharing technical expertise and knowledge within Lloyd’s Register. Publications have consistently been released on a yearly basis, with a brief interruption between 1938 and 1946. These publications serve as a key reference point for best practices and were initially reserved for internal use to maximise LR’s competitive advantage. Today, the LRTA takes a fresh approach, focusing on collaboration by combining professional expertise from across LRF & Group to ensure a frequent output of fresh perspectives and relevant content. The LRTA has evolved into a Group-wide initiative that identifies, captures, and shares knowledge spanning various business streams and functions. To support this modern approach, the LRTA has adopted a new structure featuring representatives and senior governance across the business streams and the LR Foundation. The Lloyd's Register Technical Association Papers should be seen as historical documents representing earlier viewpoints and are not reflective of current thinking and perspectives by the current LR Technical Association. The Lloyd's Register Staff Association (LRSA) changed its name to the Lloyd's Register Technical Association (LRTA) in 1973.

Book Community Care Practice and the Law

Download or read book Community Care Practice and the Law written by Michael Mandelstam and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Community Care Practice and the Lawhas been substantially rewritten and restructured to reflect the rapid change affecting community care in legislation, the law courts, policy and practice. The book bridges the gap between law and practice by juxtaposing fully and systematically legislation, legal judgments in the courts, local ombudsman and health service ombudsman findings, Parliamentary debates and answers, and numerous reports about practice from the Department of Health, voluntary organisations, professional associations and academics. Distinctive features of the book include: two large digests of cases containing well over three hundred legal judgments and local ombudsman investigations; a chapter consisting of a practical checklist of questions - for managers, practitioners and users of services and their advisors - to check the lawfulness of policies, eligibility criteria and individual decisions; two overview, stand-alone chapters, one summarising the system, the other highlighting underlying themes and mechanisms; an inclusive approach embracing not only a range of both residential and non-residential care services, but also equipment and home adaptations, carers, direct payments, NHS services generally and continuing care, moving and handling law, legislation and guidance (old and new) underlying joint working and joint finance; avoidance of jargon.

This book was released on 2001-11-06 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen years since its establishment, the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights has not received the attention that should have been paid to its important contributions towards the promotion and protection of human rights in Africa. The aim of this publication is to provide not only the basic documents, but also the less well known material related to the jurisprudence emanating from the consideration of communications. This volume therefore includes, amongst other material, the twelve activity reports adopted by the Commission, resolutions, and final communiqués from the sessions. This is the first attempt to reproduce comprehensively the many documents of the Commission adopted since its inception in 1987. It will be an essential reference for academics, students, and practitioners. The publication is produced in collaboration with the African Society for International and Comparative Law, the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria and Interights in London.

Book The Scottish Parliament

Download or read book The Scottish Parliament written by David Arter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is unique in analysing the new Scottish Parliament from a systematically comparative perspective. Its basic premise is that since devolution in 1999 Scotland can be considered a Scandinavian-style democracy with several features of a Scandinavian-style parliament. The basic research question, therefore, is: 'Has the Scottish Parliament in its first four-year term manifested a Scandinavian-style politics in the sense that there has been a high incidence of inter-party negotiation within Parliament?' The architects of the Scottish Parliament saw the committees as the motor of a 'new politics' and gave them extensive powers. Outside Austria, only the Swedish and Icelandic committees have comparable powers. Accordingly, the study sets out to describe and analyse the workings of the committees in the Scottish, Swedish and Icelandic Parliaments. The concluding chapter also discusses the operation of the Danish, Finnish and Norwegian committees.
