Download or read book When You Care written by Elissa Strauss and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “brilliantly argued and timely book” (Brigid Schulte, New York Times bestselling author), journalist Elissa Strauss explores the powerful role caring for others plays in our individual and communal lives, weaving together research about care and stories from parents and caregivers with a feminist bent. Behind our current caregiving crisis, in which a broken system has left parents and caregivers exhausted, sits a fierce addiction to independence. But what would happen if we started to appreciate dependency, and the deep meaning of one person caring for another? If we start to care about care? Drawing on research into parenting and caregiving, as well as her own experiences as a mother, journalist Elissa Strauss delves into the history and power of care in our lives and communities. With a curiosity and desire to more fully understand one of humanity’s most profound and essential relationships, she interrogates our societal obsession with going it alone, and poses a challenge to let ourselves be transformed by the act of caregiving. When You Care weaves historical anecdotes and science with conversations with parents and caregivers to the young, old, disabled, ill, and more, revealing a rich array of insights about how care shapes us on the inside and the outside, for the better. Care is a long-ignored force in our collective and political lives, as well as a deeply philosophical, spiritual, and psychologically potent experience. Moreso, an embrace of care by both women and men will lead to a more gender equitable future and help us reimagine what it means to be productive and live a meaningful life. The result is an eye-opening exploration into the power of being depended on—and a stirring call to action to finally acknowledge the breadth, depth, and beauty of all that caregivers do.

Book Contagion in Prussia 1831

Download or read book Contagion in Prussia 1831 written by Richard S. Ross III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1831, Prussia was consumed by two fears: the possibility of revolution resulting from the 1830 November Uprising of Poland against Russia, and a looming cholera epidemic. As the contagion made its way across Russia, Prussian medical officials took note and prepared to respond to what they thought was a highly contagious disease. When it spread to Poland, Prussia instituted a strict quarantine policy on its border, inhibiting Prussian support of the Russian war effort in Poland. From the Polish perspective the quarantine was seen as a deliberate act of sabotage against the revolution, an attempt to cut off trade with the West. This book examines the Prussian government's strict health policy and its consequences, including social unrest and resulting public health reforms. Polish public health policy is investigated in light of the revolutionary government's needs. Information is provided on the cholera camps established by Prussia to quarantine Polish soldiers who crossed the border as refugees in July 1831, the height of the cholera fear in Prussia.

Book Cases on Practical Applications for Remote Hybrid and Hyflex Teaching

Download or read book Cases on Practical Applications for Remote Hybrid and Hyflex Teaching written by Shinas, Valerie Harlow and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-03-18 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic created a ripple effect that impacted education worldwide, felt from Pre-K through higher education. In response to the pandemic, teachers, parents, and students shifted to teaching and learning online to adjust to the affordances found in digital spaces. However, challenges quickly arose, and it was found that research was sorely needed on adapting learning to these digital spaces, including addressing issues with equitable access to technological tools, meeting the social emotional needs of all learners, and developing appropriate teaching strategies for young children in online spaces. Situating our understanding of emerging research in this area of remote teaching and learning in Pre-K through higher education is critical as we look to build upon evidence-based practices to better support 21st-century educators and learners. Cases on Practical Applications for Remote, Hybrid, and Hyflex Teaching presents emerging case studies on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and reports and responds to early evidence of these impacts and the predicted future impacts for students, families, teachers, policymakers, and higher education. Building on knowledge of how teaching and learning in digital spaces work, the literature presented in this book captures preliminary findings and emerging research examining how educators leverage teaching and learning across platforms and modalities and shares stories on how educators, families, and communities responded to the challenges of teaching and learning online to ensure all students were engaged and fully supported while learning remotely and as they transitioned back to the classroom. Covering topics such as pedagogies, remote teaching, and parental responses, it is ideal for teachers, academicians, preservice teachers, professors, researchers, community education providers, and students.

A year later, McKinley has descended into chaos. All the students are infected with a virus that makes them deadly to adults. The school is under military quarantine. The teachers are gone. Violent gangs have formed based on high school social cliques. Without a gang, you're as good as dead. And David has no gang. It's just him and his little brother, Will, against the whole school. In this frighteningly dark and captivating novel, Lex Thomas locks readers inside a school where kids don't fight to be popular, they fight to stay alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Pandemic was a reminder that there’s nothing more important than our health and the lives of our loved ones. With better choices and planning we will be more resilient in the future.” —Richard Bailey Mayor of Coronado, California We Endured chronicles of how lives were changed by the arrival of Covid-19. With experience in research and interviewing people for media, I took a dive into the ways the pandemic affected us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I have been writing for some time for a LinkedIn Site, Bizcatalyst360. My style is to observe my everyday life looking for connection to the world. Finding an idea that touched my soul, doing some research, and asking questions of those who would know more in a particular area. My first ones approached the concept of change. As I became more inspired due to being home in the first months of the pandemic, I started writing weekly. I wrote and then turned it to a Facebook live show on a 24-hr. place called the Quarantine Network. The live chat with the audience resulted in more topics to discover. Because of my nomadic and gregarious life experiences, I would find friends and ask a few poignant questions. “The Quarantine Network was created by humans for humans. Instead of panicking or falling into bad habits, we decided to spend our days being connected to people. We created programs to keep our friends and strangers informed and occupied during dark times. When the light at the end of the tunnel arrived, we had an entire community that had been built.” —Beau Harvey Doiron Creator of the Quarantine Network This book is a testament to all of those in my greater circle who endured with me. I didn’t not want all their efforts and sacrifices to be forgotten. Come dive in with me, I am confident you will be surprised!
