Book Modelling of Pollutants in Complex Environmental Systems

Download or read book Modelling of Pollutants in Complex Environmental Systems written by Grady Hanrahan and published by ILM Publications. This book was released on 2010 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental modelling has enjoyed a long tradition, but there is a defined need to continually address both the power and the limitations of such models, as well as their quantitative assessment. This book showcases modern environmental modelling methods, the basic theory behind them and their incorporation into complex environmental investigations. It highlights advanced computing technologies and how they have led to unprecedented and adaptive modelling, simulation and decision-support tools to study complex environmental systems, and how they can be applied to current environmental concerns. This volume is essential reading for researchers in academia, industry and government-related bodies who have a vested interest in all aspects of environmental modelling. Features include: A range of modern environmental modelling techniques are described by experts from around the world, including the USA, Canada, Australia, Europe and Thailand; many examples from air, water, soil/sediment and biological matrices are covered in detail throughout the book; key chapters are included on modelling uncertainty and sensitivity analysis; and, a selection of figures are provided in full colour to enable greater comprehension of the topics discussed.

Book Electrokinetics Across Disciplines and Continents

Download or read book Electrokinetics Across Disciplines and Continents written by Alexandra B. Ribeiro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The socio-economic activities due to world development are promoting increasing pressures on land, creating competition and conflicts, resulting in suboptimal use of resources. Integrated planning and management of land resources is a top subject of Agenda 21 (managed by FAO), which deals with the cross-sectoral aspects of decision-making for the sustainable use and development of natural resources. This is essential for life-support systems and its productive capacity. In this context, there is a need to find new strategies for sustainable development that links social and economic progress with environmental protection and enhancement. Electrokinetic transport processes (EK) uses a low-level direct current as the “cleaning agent”. EK has been applied to the remediation of polluted soils and other contaminated matrices. It also shows a great potential to be used in different fields, as in saline soil restoration, nutrients recovery from wastes or repair and maintenance of building structures. EK may be an integrated approach for new strategies aiming at sustainable development and to support waste strategies, with worldwide interest. EK can also be coupled with phytoremediation and integrated with nanotechnology, enlarging the scope of its application. The conciliation of the EK in the recovery of secondary resources, remediation and conservation is a multidisciplinary novel approach that opens new technical possibilities for waste minimization, through upgrading of particulate waste products and the recovery of secondary resources for industrial, agricultural or social use.

Book Soil Machine Interactions

Download or read book Soil Machine Interactions written by Shen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aiming to improve work efficiency in such areas as tillage in agriculture, earth-moving in civil engineering, and tunnel-making in sea-bed operations, this work offers an introduction to Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis of soil-machine systems. It explains the advantage of FEM's numerical approach over traditional analytical and empirical methods of dealing with complex factors from nonlinear mechanical behaviour to geometric configurations.

Book Contaminant Transport Modeling Through Saturated Porous Media

Download or read book Contaminant Transport Modeling Through Saturated Porous Media written by Anand M. Hulagabali and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater quality varies due to the chemical, geochemical, and biochemical reactions of the pollutants in the subsurface flow systems. To reliably predict the fate of contaminant transport in groundwater, an accurate numerical modeling is required. Analytical and numerical simulation models help civil engineering to understand the physical and chemical processes that influence contaminant transport through a saturated soil layer, including advective and dispersive transport as well as sorption. In the present investigation, An attempt has been made to provide a simple but sufficiently accurate methodology for numerical simulation of the one, two and three dimensional contaminant transport through the saturated homogeneous porous media and landfill liners using Finite Element method. Exercise was undertaken to determine the rate of movement of contaminants from landfill, so as to arrive at expected future concentrations of contaminants in the groundwater around landfill. Systematic study conducted to determine the impact of municipal solid waste disposal at Bhalaswa landfill Site in New Delhi has reveled that the groundwater is being significantly contaminated due to the leachate.

Book Contaminated Ground Water and Sediment

Download or read book Contaminated Ground Water and Sediment written by Calvin C. Chien and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-11-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the documented result of an expert workshop, Modeling and Management of Emerging Environmental Issues, held at Penn State University. This event assembled four panels of modeling experts from the U.S. and Canada to discuss modeling technology development and application in order to promote sound and cost-effective environmental decision-making. This thorough analysis provides an overview on the state-of-the-art in current practice and identifies emerging research and development trends within modeling technology. Each of the discussions considers not only technical issues, but regulatory and cost factors as well.
