Book 26 Years Behind Bars

Download or read book 26 Years Behind Bars written by Paul Laxton and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is written from the perspective of a participant observer. It is not strictly an autobiography or a history, although it has elements of both, as it would fail without them. It is intended for both the general reader and criminal justice professionals. My intention is that the book is educational, showing the prison system over three decades in the context of social, political and organisational change, in particular the impact of the decline of deference, the growth of public managerialism and the rise of political correctness. The trenchant opinions expressed are based on intellectual rumination, observation of human behaviour, and personal and professional experience. I have deliberately chosen a thematic approach for the book so that explanation and information work in tandem, giving a unique insight into the modern prison service and the workings of the public sector.

Book excerpt: A stunning account of life behind bars at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, where the nation’s hardest criminals do hard time. “A page-turner, as compelling and evocative as the finest novel. The best book on prison I’ve ever read.”—Jonathan Kellerman The most dreaded facility in the prison system because of its fierce population, Leavenworth is governed by ruthless clans competing for dominance. Among the “star” players in these pages: Carl Cletus Bowles, the sexual predator with a talent for murder; Dallas Scott, a gang member who has spent almost thirty of his forty-two years behind bars; indomitable Warden Robert Matthews, who put his shoulder against his prison’s grim reality; Thomas Silverstein, a sociopath confined in “no human contact” status since 1983; “tough cop” guard Eddie Geouge, the only officer in the penitentiary with the authority to sentence an inmate to “the Hole”; and William Post, a bank robber with a criminal record going back to when he was eight years old—and known as the “Catman” for his devoted care of the cats who live inside the prison walls. Pete Earley, celebrated reporter and author of Family of Spies, all but lived for nearly two years inside the primordial world of Leavenworth, where he conducted hundreds of interviews. Out of this unique, extraordinary access comes the riveting story of what life is actually like in the oldest maximum-security prison in the country. Praise for The Hot House “Reporting at its very finest.”—Los Angeles Times “The book is a large act of courage, its subject an important one, and . . . Earley does it justice.”—The Washington Post Book World “[A] riveting, fiercely unsentimental book . . . To [Earley’s] credit, he does not romanticize the keepers or the criminals. His cool and concise prose style serves him well. . . . This is a gutsy book.”—Chicago Tribune “Harrowing . . . an exceptional work of journalism.”—Detroit Free Press “If you’re going to read any book about prison, The Hot House is the one. . . . It is the most realistic, unbuffed account of prison anywhere in print.”—Kansas City Star “A superb piece of reporting.”—Tom Clancy

Book My Truth Behind Bars

Download or read book My Truth Behind Bars written by Sr. David Iván Gálvez C. and published by . This book was released on 2024-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was developed during the six and a half years (2014-2020) that I remained unjustly incarcerated in four state prisons: San Quentin, Pelican Bay, Stockton, and Mule Creek, California. For a horrendous crime I did not commit, and I was practically compelled to testify otherwise. In the following texts, I will weave bitter dawns behind cells that describe simple everyday events, moments, and stages of my life, difficult to accept, difficult to conceive, of a simple man taken to an extreme of his human condition. Such were the routines I experienced, that they led me to change many knowledge and theoretical reflections that had guided me in the exercise of my profession. Likewise, I was uncomfortable with overturning these regimented and "methodologically correct" styles since I was certain that these realities could not be "translated" into simple subjects and objects of memory. Beyond specific words, series, and meanings, I have become convinced that the best way to express reality was to expose it as such, without filtering it in methods or operations, and I opted for a story that transfigured and adapted a certain reality to a general language, understandable and apprehensible by all: I found the literary language. I don't dare to call this text either a legend or an experience, but I did find in these lines a bit of both genders. If you're looking for a secret, this isn't a book for you.

Book excerpt: Larry Andrews once thought he had it all. The senior class president and former athlete had a great family, bright future, and he became successful at an early age making lots of money; so much money that he lived an out-of-control lifestyle filled with booze, parties, and finally, drugs. But, his life imploded. That's what meth does; it tears apart everything good and leaves the user with a life usually shattered beyond repair. After escaping close calls again and again, Andrews was arrested in 2001 on drug charges he couldn't shake. While sitting in a stark jail cell, facing a 20-year mandatory prison sentence, God made Himself known in a stunning, extraordinary way. This is the compelling true story of how God can transform a life so messed up, it seems unsalvageable. From the first page to the last, the book speaks these truths to every reader: you, too, can be forgiven, leave the past behind, move forward, embrace the adventures of a faith-filled life, and truly enjoy ... The Ride.
