Barnett and Charles Dickens)(1844) : 찰스 재커리 바넷(Charles Zachary Barnett)(1813~1849)은 영국에서 활동한 극작가(playwright)로 작곡가인 오빠 존 바넷(John Barnett)과 오페라 Fair Rosamond(1837), Farinelli(1839) 등을 함께 작업한 ‘가족 예술가’입니다. 유대인(Jew)의 정체성을 바탕으로 유대인이 등장하는 작품을 즐겨 집필하였습니다. 특히 올리버 트위스트(Oliver Twist; or, the Parish Boy's Progress)(1837)를 비롯한 찰스 디킨스의 초기 작품을 희곡화한 것으로 명성을 떨쳤습니다. 당시에는 소설 원작이 출간되면 (원작자의 허락없이?!) 여러 극장에서 경쟁적으로 이를 공연화하는 것이 관행이였으며 일부 작품은 원작자가 공인해주기도 하였습니다. 찰스 디킨스 또한 초반기 작품이 무대 공연을 통해 대중들의 사랑을 받는 모습을 보고 자신이 직접 대본 작업에 뛰어 들었습니다. 그녀가 각색한 크리스마스 캐롤 희곡(A Christmas Carol; Or, The Miser's Warning! by C. Book excerpt: Two months after Charles Dickens published "A Christmas Carol" eight adaptations had appeared on London stages including the young playwright Charles Zachart Barnett's version which was much darker and grimmer than the others. While the other versions quickly faded, Barnett's adaptation remained in print throughout the 19th Century and even as late as the 1930s, the play was still being produced in schools and by theatres. Barnett entered the world of London theatesr early as a child actor, along with his brother John, who later achieved success as a composer. As an adult, Barnett gave up acting to concentrate on his career as a playwright. In a very short time, his plays were being produced by the leading theatres of his day. He wrote comedies, dramas, librettos to operas, and an adaptation of Dickens' "Oliver Twist." Four years after his "Christmas Carol" was produced, Barnett's promising playwriting career was cut short when he passed away at the age of 36.

Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, commonly known as A Christmas Carol, is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843 and illustrated by John Leech. A Christmas Carol recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. After their visits, Scrooge awakens on Christmas morning a changed man, embodying the spirit of Christmas.Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol during a period when the British were exploring and re-evaluating past Christmas traditions, including carols, and newer customs such as Christmas trees. He was influenced by the experiences of his own youth and by the Christmas stories of other authors, including Washington Irving and Douglas Jerrold. Dickens had written three Christmas stories prior to the novella, and was inspired following a visit to the Field Lane Ragged School, one of several establishments for London's street children. The treatment of the poor and the ability of a selfish man to redeem himself by transforming into a more sympathetic character are the key themes of the story. There is discussion among academics as to whether this is a fully secular story, or if it is a Christian allegory.Published on 19 December, the first edition sold out by Christmas Eve; by the end of 1844 thirteen editions had been released. Most critics reviewed the novella favourably. The story was illicitly copied in January 1844; Dickens took legal action against the publishers, who went bankrupt, further reducing Dickens's small profits from the publication. He went on to write four other Christmas stories in subsequent years. In 1849 he began public readings of the story, which proved so successful he undertook 127 further performances until 1870, the year of his death. A Christmas Carol has never been out of print and has been translated into several languages; the story has been adapted many times for film, stage, opera and other media.A Christmas Carol captured the zeitgeist of the mid-Victorian revival of the Christmas holiday. Dickens had acknowledged the influence of the modern Western observance of Christmas and later inspired several aspects of Christmas, including family gatherings, seasonal food and drink, dancing, games and a festive generosity of spirit."
