Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Pulitzer Prize–winning author Jon Meacham helps us understand the present moment in American politics and life by looking back at critical times in our history when hope overcame division and fear. ONE OF OPRAH’S “BOOKS THAT HELP ME THROUGH” • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • The Christian Science Monitor • Southern Living Our current climate of partisan fury is not new, and in The Soul of America Meacham shows us how what Abraham Lincoln called the “better angels of our nature” have repeatedly won the day. Painting surprising portraits of Lincoln and other presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and Lyndon B. Johnson, and illuminating the courage of such influential citizen activists as Martin Luther King, Jr., early suffragettes Alice Paul and Carrie Chapman Catt, civil rights pioneers Rosa Parks and John Lewis, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and Army-McCarthy hearings lawyer Joseph N. Welch, Meacham brings vividly to life turning points in American history. He writes about the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the birth of the Lost Cause; the backlash against immigrants in the First World War and the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s; the fight for women’s rights; the demagoguery of Huey Long and Father Coughlin and the isolationist work of America First in the years before World War II; the anti-Communist witch-hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy; and Lyndon Johnson’s crusade against Jim Crow. Each of these dramatic hours in our national life have been shaped by the contest to lead the country to look forward rather than back, to assert hope over fear—a struggle that continues even now. While the American story has not always—or even often—been heroic, we have been sustained by a belief in progress even in the gloomiest of times. In this inspiring book, Meacham reassures us, “The good news is that we have come through such darkness before”—as, time and again, Lincoln’s better angels have found a way to prevail. Praise for The Soul of America “Brilliant, fascinating, timely . . . With compelling narratives of past eras of strife and disenchantment, Meacham offers wisdom for our own time.”—Walter Isaacson “Gripping and inspiring, The Soul of America is Jon Meacham’s declaration of his faith in America.”—Newsday “Meacham gives readers a long-term perspective on American history and a reason to believe the soul of America is ultimately one of kindness and caring, not rancor and paranoia.”—USA Today

Book Make America Healthy Again

Download or read book Make America Healthy Again written by Nicole Saphier and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER! If Americans want to know why their health care is so costly and getting costlier, they need only look in the mirror. Americans are notoriously unhealthy—we eat too much, drink too much, and sit too much. When roughly 80 percent of cardiovascular disease and 40 percent of all cancer cases could be prevented by simple lifestyle changes, it is time to take a deeper look at the problem and ask who is truly responsible. Consider that: · After seventy years of innovation, heart disease and cancer remain the top two causes of death in the United States. · In 1960, health care spending was 5 percent of America's GDP; today, it is 17.5 percent. · The government spends over $1 trillion annually on health care. · Nearly one in five American deaths is associated with poor diets. · Simply reducing sodium intake by 1,200 mg per day could save up to $20 billion a year in medical costs. In Make America Healthy Again, Nicole Saphier, a Memorial Sloan Kettering physician, nationally recognized patient advocate, and media personality, reveals how individual negligence and big government incompetence have destroyed America’s health care system. Combining historical events, economic trends, and essential lifestyle advice, with her unique perspective, she offers concrete solutions to address this epic problem. We don’t need socialized medicine—we need to take better care of ourselves. By getting healthier and adopting preventative measures, Saphier believes, we can reduce the astronomical costs of treatment and improve overall care. The only way to lower medical costs for everyone is to stop incentivizing bad health decisions. Policies such as the Affordable Care Act and single-payer plans ignore something crucial to lowering the overall financial burden: personal responsibility. We can no longer expect doctors and the government to fix illnesses we have the power to prevent. Regardless of which health policy is adopted, our nation will flounder unless we take action. It is up to the American people to make America healthy again.

Book When More Is Not Better

Download or read book When More Is Not Better written by Roger L. Martin and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American democratic capitalism is in danger. How can we save it? For its first two hundred years, the American economy exhibited truly impressive performance. The combination of democratically elected governments and a capitalist system worked, with ever-increasing levels of efficiency spurred by division of labor, international trade, and scientific management of companies. By the nation's bicentennial celebration in 1976, the American economy was the envy of the world. But since then, outcomes have changed dramatically. Growth in the economic prosperity of the average American family has slowed to a crawl, while the wealth of the richest Americans has skyrocketed. This imbalance threatens the American democratic capitalist system and our way of life. In this bracing yet constructive book, world-renowned business thinker Roger Martin starkly outlines the fundamental problem: We have treated the economy as a machine, pursuing ever-greater efficiency as an inherent good. But efficiency has become too much of a good thing. Our obsession with it has inadvertently shifted the shape of our economy, from a large middle class and smaller numbers of rich and poor (think of a bell-shaped curve) to a greater share of benefits accruing to a thin tail of already-rich Americans (a Pareto distribution). With lucid analysis and engaging anecdotes, Martin argues that we must stop treating the economy as a perfectible machine and shift toward viewing it as a complex adaptive system in which we seek a fundamental balance of efficiency with resilience. To achieve this, we need to keep in mind the whole while working on the component parts; pursue improvement, not perfection; and relentlessly tweak instead of attempting to find permanent solutions. Filled with keen economic insight and advice for citizens, executives, policy makers, and educators, When More Is Not Better is the must-read guide for saving democratic capitalism.

Download or read book Trumponomics written by Stephen Moore and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Trump promised the American people a transformative change in economic policy after eight years of stagnation under Obama. But he didn’t adopt a conventional left or right economic agenda. His is a new economic populism that combines some conventional Republican ideas–tax cuts, deregulation, more power to the states–with more traditional Democratic issues such as trade protectionism and infrastructure spending. It also mixes in important populist issues such as immigration reform, pressuring the Europeans to pay for more of their own defense, and keeping America first. In Trumponomics, conservative economists Stephen Moore and Arthur B. Laffer offer a well-informed defense of the president's approach to trade, taxes, employment, infrastructure, and other economic policies. Moore and Laffer worked as senior economic advisors to Donald Trump in 2016. They traveled with him, frequently met with his political and economic teams, worked on his speeches, and represented him as surrogates. They are currently members of the Trump Advisory Council and still meet with him regularly. In Trumponomics, they offer an insider’s view on how Trump operates in public and behind closed doors, his priorities and passions, and his greatest attributes and liabilities. Trump is betting his presidency that he can create an economic revival in America’s industrial heartland. Can he really bring jobs back to the rust belt? Can he cut taxes and bring the debt down? Above all, does he have the personal discipline, the vision, the right team, and the right strategy to pull off his ambitious economic goals? Moore and Laffer believe that he can pull it off and that Trumponomics will usher in a new era of prosperity for all Americans.

Book Make America Our America Again

Download or read book Make America Our America Again written by Mary Chepak and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004 I met a friend at a fabulous restaurant on the upper west side of Manhattan; and like old friends do, we talked and reconnected, as though we had just seen each other the day before. That was, until we began to talk about the upcoming presidential election. Things turned sideways after that. And I wondered to myself how two friends of 25 years, who had so much in common, could have such opposing views. At first, we both dug in our heals; but as we continued our day, we realized that our friendship was too important to let political views get in our way. Thus, we tabled any talk of government. The one thing that struck me though, was the fact that we both had the same goals. We both wanted health for our families, compassion extended to others, opportunities for employment, affordable housing/college and fairness for all etc... However, we could not agree on how these ideals could materialize in our country. Rather, we each were certain it could only be accomplished through the ideas put forth by our own chosen candidate. This experience had an enormous impact on my thinking. I began to ponder how two good people, who are so similar, could come to such differing conclusions. Luckily, our friendship really has stood the test of time. We have managed to agree to disagree on some topics, listen and learn, drop a subject if the other is getting upset, and always respect each other. By respecting our difference of opinions and regarding each other positively, despite of our opposing views, I think we both have grown. This is such a necessary trait to have in relationships, in this era. And it is extremely essential to have within our nation at large. If our lawmakers behaved more like myself and my friend, there would be much hope for the future. In the 15 years since that 2004 election, America has become more and more divided. This book is written in an attempt to get each of us to find a way to begin to address the problem of the American great divide, before it is too late. I've always been impressed by the "We the People", in the Preamble to the constitution. Notice, it doesn't say, "We the rulers". According to this document, WE, as ordinary citizens, have the majority role, in the establishment of our great Nation. What a privilege it is for each and every one of us. America seems to be fatigued and has not been able to live up to this standard set by our forefathers. We need to remember who "we the people are" and "Make America Our America Again". We each need to listen to one another, communicate, educate ourselves, read, vote, engage in generosity, be tolerant, be merciful, be compassionate, compromise, use ingenuity, be polite, and be kind. We each have our part, even if our lawmakers choose not to do theirs. Join me in being inspired to take part in addressing pressing issues in OUR America:1. MAKE AMERICA AFFORDABLE AGAIN2. MAKE AMERICA BENEVOLENT AGAIN3. MAKE AMERICA COMMUNICATE AGAIN 4. MAKE AMERICA DIDACTIC AGAIN5. MAKE AMERICA ENLIGHTENED AGAIN6. MAKE AMERICA FEARLESS AGAIN7. MAKE AMERICA GROW AGAIN8. Book How to Destroy America in Three Easy Steps

Download or read book How to Destroy America in Three Easy Steps written by Ben Shapiro and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! A growing number of Americans want to tear down what it’s taken us 250 years to build—and they’ll start by canceling our shared history, ideals, and culture. Traditional areas of civic agreement are vanishing. We can’t agree on what makes America special. We can’t even agree that America is special. We’re coming to the point that we can’t even agree what the word America itself means. “Disintegrationists” say we’re stronger together, but their assault on America’s history, philosophy, and culture will only tear us apart. Who are the disintegrationists? From Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States to the New York Times’ 1619 project, many modern analyses view American history through the lens of competing oppressions, a racist and corrupt experiment from the very beginning. They see American philosophy as a lie – beautiful words pasted over a thoroughly rotted system. They see America’s culture of rights as a façade that merely reinforces traditional hierarchies of power, instead of being the only culture that guarantees freedom for individuals. Disintegrationist attacks on the values that built our nation are insidious because they replace each foundational belief, from the rights to free speech and self-defense to the importance of marriage and faith communities, with nothing more than an increased reliance on the government. This twisted disintegrationist vision replaces the traditional “unionist” understanding that all Americans are united in a shared striving toward the perfection of universal ideals. How to Destroy America in Three Easy Steps shows that to be a cohesive nation we have to uphold foundational truths about ourselves, our history, and reality itself—to be unionists instead of disintegrationists. Shapiro offers a vital warning that if we don’t recover these shared truths, our future—our union—as a great country is threatened with destruction.

Book Making America Great by Building it Better

Download or read book Making America Great by Building it Better written by Melody Young and published by . This book was released on 2022-07-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make America Great Again? or Build it back Better? Well it certainly has the potential to be great and better, always has been, but with gun violence, skyrocketing inflation, supply shortages and a deeply divided nation at least in the world of politics, we still have a lot of work to do. The thoughts and opinions in this book are those of an average American, woman, wife, mother, gig worker, and entrepreneur that will touch on hot button issues such as gun control legislation, free education, affordable healthcare and immigration just to name a few. The suggestions aren't far right or far left but exactly what this country needs to be great by being better. The goal, is to work together to improve our communities, cities, states and thereby country and to elect politicians who want the same, not just to be in power. This book is not a left wing socialist ideology or a right wing, conspiracy theory driven guide. It is a "we the people" list of ideas of ways to help this country live up to its fullest potential and ways to make that happen.

Book One Billion Americans

Download or read book One Billion Americans written by Matthew Yglesias and published by Penguin Group. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER What would actually make America great: more people. If the most challenging crisis in living memory has shown us anything, it’s that America has lost the will and the means to lead. We can’t compete with the huge population clusters of the global marketplace by keeping our population static or letting it diminish, or with our crumbling transit and unaffordable housing. The winner in the future world is going to have more—more ideas, more ambition, more utilization of resources, more people. Exactly how many Americans do we need to win? According to Matthew Yglesias, one billion. From one of our foremost policy writers, One Billion Americans is the provocative yet logical argument that if we aren’t moving forward, we’re losing. Vox founder Yglesias invites us to think bigger, while taking the problems of decline seriously. What really contributes to national prosperity should not be controversial: supporting parents and children, welcoming immigrants and their contributions, and exploring creative policies that support growth—like more housing, better transportation, improved education, revitalized welfare, and climate change mitigation. Drawing on examples and solutions from around the world, Yglesias shows not only that we can do this, but why we must. Making the case for massive population growth with analytic rigor and imagination, One Billion Americans issues a radical but undeniable challenge: Why not do it all, and stay on top forever?

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller Business Book of the Year--Association of Business Journalists From the New York Times bestselling author comes an eye-opening, urgent look at America's broken health care system--and the people who are saving it--now with a new Afterword by the author. "A must-read for every American." --Steve Forbes, editor-in-chief, FORBES One in five Americans now has medical debt in collections and rising health care costs today threaten every small business in America. Dr. Makary, one of the nation's leading health care experts, travels across America and details why health care has become a bubble. Drawing from on-the-ground stories, his research, and his own experience, The Price We Pay paints a vivid picture of the business of medicine and its elusive money games in need of a serious shake-up. Dr. Makary shows how so much of health care spending goes to things that have nothing to do with health and what you can do about it. Dr. Makary challenges the medical establishment to remember medicine's noble heritage of caring for people when they are vulnerable. The Price We Pay offers a road map for everyday Americans and business leaders to get a better deal on their health care, and profiles the disruptors who are innovating medical care. The movement to restore medicine to its mission, Makary argues, is alive and well--a mission that can rebuild the public trust and save our country from the crushing cost of health care.

Book excerpt: "How To Make America Utopia" explains our economy and our politics in a manner that is easily understood. More importantly, it is truthful and discounts the misinformation that has been told since the country's inception. The book illustrates how the false basis on which the economy is based is responsible for most Americans' inability to succeed independently or get the services they want from the government. Ultimately, it clarifies what an American Utopia should be, an America where all have equal access to success and happiness. We answer the following questions and many others. Most importantly, we provide plausible solutions.* Why do most Americans continue to accept a system that moves so slowly in empowering one group after that another?* Why do Americans continue to support politicians who refuse to establish a health care system that takes care of all its citizens like every major industrialized country in the world?* Why do Americans continue to support a criminal justice system so unfair to people of color and all the poor even though their country preaches morality to the rest of the world? * Why do Americans continue to tolerate an unequal educational system where one's public education is directly proportional to the wealth of the portion of any school district where one resides?* Why do Americans accept a public college education system that saddles a large percentage of students with burdensome debts?* Why do Americans give corporations the same rights we give human beings, personhood?* Why do Americans allow politicians to spend more than the next 9 or so countries combined for a defense we will never need nor could we ever use?* Why do Americans allow politicians to build toll roads, in effect allowing private corporations to tax us for roads that should be built from taxpayer dollars? * Why do Americans allow the working person's income to be taxed at a higher rate than investment income?* Why do Americans allow corporations to use the patent system to stifle innovation?* Why do Americans allow deregulation at the expense of their health and a clean environment?* Why do Americans support an economic system biased to the corporation and business first?

Book Tears We Cannot Stop

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOW A NEW YORK TIMES, PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY, INDIEBOUND, LOS ANGELES TIMES, WASHINGTON POST, CHRONICLE HERALD, SALISBURY POST, GUELPH MERCURY TRIBUNE, AND BOSTON GLOBE BESTSELLER | NAMED A BEST/MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2017 BY: The Washington Post • Bustle • Men's Journal • The Chicago Reader • StarTribune • Blavity• The Guardian • NBC New York's Bill's Books • Kirkus • Essence “One of the most frank and searing discussions on race ... a deeply serious, urgent book, which should take its place in the tradition of Baldwin's The Fire Next Time and King's Why We Can't Wait." —The New York Times Book Review Toni Morrison hails Tears We Cannot Stop as "Elegantly written and powerful in several areas: moving personal recollections; profound cultural analysis; and guidance for moral redemption. A work to relish." Stephen King says: "Here’s a sermon that’s as fierce as it is lucid...If you’re black, you’ll feel a spark of recognition in every paragraph. If you’re white, Dyson tells you what you need to know—what this white man needed to know, at least. This is a major achievement. I read it and said amen." Short, emotional, literary, powerful—Tears We Cannot Stop is the book that all Americans who care about the current and long-burning crisis in race relations will want to read. As the country grapples with racist division at a level not seen since the 1960s, one man's voice soars above the rest with conviction and compassion. In his 2016 New York Times op-ed piece "Death in Black and White," Michael Eric Dyson moved a nation. Now he continues to speak out in Tears We Cannot Stop—a provocative and deeply personal call for change. Dyson argues that if we are to make real racial progress we must face difficult truths, including being honest about how black grievance has been ignored, dismissed, or discounted. "The time is at hand for reckoning with the past, recognizing the truth of the present, and moving together to redeem the nation for our future. If we don't act now, if you don't address race immediately, there very well may be no future."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long an icon of American musical and political life, Pete Seeger has written eloquently in a diverse array of publications but nowhere is his life story more personally chronicled than in these, his private writings, documents and letters stored for decades in his family barn. Pete Seeger: His Life in His Own Words, collects Seeger's letters, notes, published articles, rough drafts, stories and poetry - creating the most intimate picture yet available of Seeger as a musician, an activist and a family man. The book covers the passions, personalities and experiences of a lifetime of struggle - from the pre-WWII labour movement and the Communist Party, to Woody Guthrie, the Civil Rights movement and the struggle against the war in Vietnam. The portrait that emerges is not of a saint, but a flesh-and-blood man, struggling to understand his time and his place.
