Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington, D.C. has long been known as a frustrating and sometimes confusing city for its residents to call home. The monumental core of federal office buildings, museums, and the National Mall dominates the city’s surrounding neighborhoods and urban fabric. For much of the postwar era, Washingtonians battled to make the city their own, fighting the federal government over the basic question of home rule, the right of the city’s residents to govern their local affairs. In Historic Capital, urban historian Cameron Logan examines how the historic preservation movement played an integral role in Washingtonians’ claiming the city as their own. Going back to the earliest days of the local historic preservation movement in the 1920s, Logan shows how Washington, D.C.’s historic buildings and neighborhoods have been a site of contestation between local interests and the expansion of the federal government’s footprint. He carefully analyzes the long history of fights over the right to name and define historic districts in Georgetown, Dupont Circle, and Capitol Hill and documents a series of high-profile conflicts surrounding the fate of Lafayette Square, Rhodes Tavern, and Capitol Park, SW before discussing D.C. today. Diving deep into the racial fault lines of D.C., Historic Capital also explores how the historic preservation movement affected poor and African American residents in Anacostia and the U Street and Shaw neighborhoods and changed the social and cultural fabric of the nation’s capital. Broadening his inquiry to the United States as a whole, Logan ultimately makes the provocative and compelling case that historic preservation has had as great an impact on the physical fabric of U.S. cities as any other private or public sector initiative in the twentieth century.

Book The United States Capitol

Download or read book The United States Capitol written by Suzy Maroon and published by Stewart, Tabori, & Chang. This book was released on 1993 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Capitol is an unparalleled volume of architectural photography revealing the majestic interiors - public and private - and breathtaking exterior of this American landmark building. Photographer Fred J. Maroon, in collaboration with the United States Capitol Preservation Commission, was granted unique access to the United States Capitol building, including areas in which photography is customarily prohibited. His photographs, all full color, show the building in its many moods. With an introduction by Daniel J. Boorstin, former Librarian of Congress, and a lively, authoritative text by Suzy Maroon, The United States Capitol is the most comprehensive, entertaining, and visually beautiful book on the subject. Photographs and text combine to provide a complete tour of the art and architecture of the Capitol, including the Rotunda, corridors, committee rooms, private offices, sculpture, paintings, porticoes, congressional chambers, and other working areas of the building. Exterior photographs show it by day and night, and in all seasons. Archival images document the building's 100-year-long architectural transformation. Throughout the book, the intriguing personalities of the architects, builders, and politicians who shaped the Capitol shine through. Suzy Maroon's spirited prose and Fred J. Maroon's astonishingly beautiful photographs are sure to delight government, architecture, and history buffs alike, especially during the year-long celebration of the bicentennial of the 1793 laying of the cornerstone by George Washington.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On January 6, 2021, Americans and the world witnessed a mob ransack the US Capitol, the "People's House," as the US Congress attempted to carry out a basic function of democracy, the certification of an election and the peaceful transfer of power. While this attack was unprecedented in its scale, threats to the Capitol are not new; and since the 1990s have included a crazed lone gunman, the attempted Al-Qaeda attack of 9/11, and bioterrorism in the form of anthrax. In addition, time and the weather have taken their toll on the building itself, as Congress chronically does not appropriate enough funds for the Capitol's preservation. The job of sustaining the Capitol building and grounds - as well as the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court - falls to the Architect of the Capitol, who also supervises the Capitol police with the sergeant at arms of the House and the Senate. As the steward of the People's House, the Architect must balance secuirty for the building and members with access by the public. As the 10th Architect of the Capitol, Alan Hantman oversaw the largest development of the Capitol in more than a century, the construction of the Capitol Visitor Center. This book describes the struggle to build the CVC, along with Hantman's negotiations with members of Congress for the funds to repair the Capitol dome and balance security with openness. Hantman was eye witness to some unforgettable scenes with new resonances after January 6th: Al Gore presiding over the certification of his own defeat in January 2001; the shooter who breached the Capitol in 1998 and murdered two police officers; and the evacuation of the Capitol on 9/11 as a hijacked plan approached. This book will be of interest to anyone who, after the tragic events of Jan 6, wants to know more about how the Capitol works a physical space; who runs it, how and why decisions are made about the security of the Capitol and the people who work there; and how politicians think about the Capitol Building"--

  • Author : Anne H. Farrisee
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press

Download or read book Democracy Restored written by Anne H. Farrisee and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2022-10 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning, fully illustrated history of the Georgia Capitol not only pays tribute to a grand old edifice but also vividly recounts the history that was made—and that continues to be made—within and without its walls. The Georgia Capitol is a place where, for more than a century, legislators have debated, governors have proclaimed, and courts have ruled. It is also a place where countless ordinary citizens have gathered in lively tour groups, angry protest mobs, and at times solemn funeral processions. As Timothy J. Crimmins and Anne H. Farrisee move through the major periods in the Capitol's history, they tell three interwoven stories. One is a tale of the building itself, its predecessors, its design and construction, its occasionally ill-considered renovations, and the magnificent, decade-long restoration begun in 1996. Also revealed is how the gradual accumulation of statues, flags, portraits, and civic rituals and pageants has added new layers of meaning to an already symbolic structure. The third story the authors tell is of the legislative and judicial battles that sought to limit or extend democratic freedoms. Some of these events were high drama: fisticuffs during a prohibition debate, Eugene Talmadge's strong-arm eviction of the state treasurer from the statehouse, the Three Governors Controversy, and an African American protest in the segregated cafeteria. From the laying of the cornerstone in 1885 to the present, successive generations of Georgians have created a distinctive history in and around the Capitol as they have exercised, or sought to gain, their rights. Today the Georgia Capitol remains a working center of state government, and its history continues to unfold.
