Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 21st Missouri Regiment Infantry Veteran Volunteers At the close of the war and after their discharge the members of the 21st Missouri Regiment scattered over Missouri and other States of the Union. No effort was made to keep the organization alive until 1888, when T. W. Holman, responding to the whisperings of memory for a sight and hand clasp of the old comrades of '61-'66, on his own responsibility published a call, in August, 1888, for a meeting of the survivors at Arbela, Mo. The result was a large gathering of the veterans and the organization of the 21st Missouri Infantry Veteran Volunteers Association. From that date to the present time annual meetings have been held. At the meeting in 1896, Messrs. T. W. Holman and N. D. Starr were made Regimental Historians, to compile and perpetuate the history of the regiment. At the next meeting, in 1897, these comrades made a partial report, and at the Edina, Mo., meeting in 1898, submitted the result of their labors in manuscript form. A motion was then made and carried that T. W. Holman continue the labor and revise and prepare the manuscript for publication and have it printed for the use of the Association. In accordance with the foregoing instructions the succeeding pages are respectfully submitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Even though the unit fought with General Sherman in such places as Vicksburg and Missionary Ridge, remarkably little has been written about it. This book offers the reader never before published letters, diaries and other material about the regiment as well as a complete roster of all the men who served. A must read for those interested in Missouri Civil War history.

Book The 11th Missouri Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War

Download or read book The 11th Missouri Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War written by Dennis W. Belcher and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 11th Missouri Infantry distinguished itself as just the type of regiment the Union needed in the Civil War. Hard as nails and loyal to a fault, the men of the "Eagle Brigade" would follow their commanders "into hell if they ordered." They battled two Confederate regiments at Iuka, turned the tide at Battery Robinett at Corinth, assaulted the impossible Stockade Redan at Vicksburg as whole ranks of soldiers were cut down, and broke Hood's line at Nashville. Although the 11th Missouri ranks among the 300 top regiments of the Civil War, little of its history has been formally recorded. This study provides a detailed account of the regiment's four-and-a-half years of outstanding service and a roster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few infantry regiments in the Civil War compiled a more distinguished record than the Fifth Missouri. The unique blending of fiery Irish Confederates from St. Louis with rural pro-Southern Missourians forged an unshakable esprit de corps, making the unit the crack infantry regiment in the western sector. Most of Colonel James C. McCown's troops were young men in their 20s, and their good health and physical conditioning allowed them to carry out their "shock" missions throughout the region. From the perspective of the common soldiers and the unit's leaders the activities and battles of the Fifth Missouri are recounted here.

This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans with even a casual interest in the history of the Civil War are at least vaguely familiar with the legendary Stonewall Brigade. But how many people know anything about the Third Missouri Infantry Regiment? Jefferson Davis referred to the First Missouri Brigade, of which the Third Missouri was a part, as the "unsurpassed brigade" (p. 97). The Missouri 3rd Infantry Regiment was a part of the 1st Missouri Brigade. They were formed late Dec 1861 in Missouri under General Little from members of the Missouri Militia. Several firsthand accounts are available at the brigade level, but little has been written on the 3rd Regiment. They fought throughout the war with the Army of Tennessee.
