Book excerpt: What skills enable an individual to maintain his or her employability? The skills for professional success in the 21st century are not the same as in the past. While the 20th century's professionals used so-called "routine" skills, the last 20 years have seen a demand for interaction and analysis skills. It is now essential to know how to question the reliability of information, to be creative, work in a team and communicate clearly. Faced with the speed and variability of information, we must adapt, take initiatives and produce under pressure and uncertainty. While the subject is still reserved for specialists in Europe, thousands of schools and companies around the world have turned to these new skills. 'The 21st Century Skills' offers an analysis of these skills through a model: their need, operation and development potential. Going through psychology, neurosciences, human resources, philosophy, History and biology, this book is at the crossroads of sciences and our everyday life.

Book Learning in Information Rich Environments

Download or read book Learning in Information Rich Environments written by Delia Neuman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount and range of information available to today’s students—and indeed to all learners—is unprecedented. Phrases like “the information revolution”, “the information (or knowledge) society”, and “the knowledge economy” underscore the truism that our society has been transformed by virtually instantaneous access to virtually unlimited information. Thomas Friedman tells us that “The World Is Flat” and that we must devise new political and economic understandings based on the ceaseless communication of information from all corners of the world. The Bush administration tells us that information relating to the “war on terrorism” is so critical that we must allow new kinds of surveillance to keep society safe. Teenage subscribers to social-computing networks not only access information but enter text and video images and publish them widely—becoming the first adolescents in history to be creators as well as consumers of vast quantities of information. If the characteristics of “the information age” demand new conceptions of commerce, national security, and publishing—among other things—it is logical to assume that they carry implications for education as well. In fact, a good deal has been written over the last several decades about how education as a whole must transform its structure and curriculum to accommodate the possibilities offered by new technologies. Far less has been written, however, about how the specific affordances of these technologies—and the kinds of information they allow students to access and create—relate to the central purpose of education: learning. What does “learning” mean in an information-rich environment? What are its characteristics? What kinds of tasks should it involve? What concepts, strategies, attitudes, and skills do educators and students need to master if they are to learn effectively and efficiently in such an environment? How can researchers, theorists, and practitioners foster the well-founded and widespread development of such key elements of the learning process? This book explores these questions and suggests some tentative answers. Drawing from research and theory in three distinct but related fields—learning theory, instructional systems design, and information studies—it presents a way to think about learning that responds directly to the actualities of a world brimming with information. The book is grounded in the work of such key figures in learning theory as Bransford and Anderson & Krathwohl. It draws on such theorists of instructional design as Gagne, Mayer, and Merrill. From information studies, it uses ideas from Buckland, Marchionini, and Wilson (who is known for his pioneering work in “information behavior”—that is, the full range of information seeking and use). The book breaks new ground in bringing together ideas that have run in parallel for years but whose relationship has not been fully explored.

Download or read book Missing the Bus written by Neelesh Kajale and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about our lack of awareness about Soft Skills, Health, Money and other basic life skills which are essential to be successful, healthy and wealthy personally as well as professionally In the 21st century. There are some glaring aspects missing from our learning process. We can very candidly assume that, most of the struggle/frustration we go through in our lives is not because of professional incompetence or lack of technical/operational knowhow of domains related to our professions but because of complete lack of understanding of Health aspects, life skills/soft skills and financial literacy. If we fail to take any action on these illiteracy issues immediately, we may end up paying a very heavy price in terms of wasting our precious resources like Intelligence, Time, Health and above all peace of mind. Lack of understanding of these basic aspects of demanding 21st Century Life, will expose us to a very big challenge from the local/global competition and we'll end up wasting most of our adult life correcting these stupid mistakes instead of focusing on building our lives based on our academic/professional competence. It gives me immense pleasure in presenting to you my understanding of these aspects so that we can learn, re-learn and be ready for the demanding careers and fulfilling lives.Outdated Industrial batch manufacturing education system can be replaced with customized product design and delivery system. Even handcrafted product manufacturing can also be used if we have sufficient resources of time and money with a lot of patience. But in handcrafted production, we can be sure of a meticulously designed and artistically manufactured human product of intrinsic art and infinite value, which can last for a lifetime. Let's start & be ready. Let's not MISS THE BUS!

Book Guided Inquiry

Download or read book Guided Inquiry written by Carol C. Kuhlthau and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dynamic approach to an exciting form of teaching and learning will inspire students to gain insights and complex thinking skills from the school library, their community, and the wider world. Guided inquiry is a way of thinking, learning, and teaching that changes the culture of a school into a collaborative inquiry community. Global interconnectedness calls for new skills, new knowledge, and new ways of learning to prepare students with the abilities and competencies they need to meet the challenges of a changing world. The challenge for the information-age school is to educate students for living and working in this information-rich technological environment. At the core of being educated today is knowing how to learn and innovate from a variety of sources. Through guided inquiry, students see school learning and real life meshed in meaningful ways. They develop higher order thinking and strategies for seeking meaning, creating, and innovating. Today's schools are challenged to develop student talent, coupling the rich resources of the school library with those of the community and wider world. How well are you preparing your students to draw on the knowledge and wisdom of the past while using today's technology to advance new discoveries in the future? This book is the introduction to guided inquiry. It is the place to begin to consider and plan how to develop an inquiry learning program for your students.
