She was active in the brilliant courts of Ferrara and Florence at a time when creative women enjoyed exceptional visibility in Italy. Like many such figures, she has since suffered historical neglect. Drama, Poetry and Music in Late-Renaissance Italy presents the first ever study of Bernardi’s life, and modern edition of her recently discovered literary corpus, which mostly exists in manuscript. Her writings appear in the original Italian with new English translations, scholarly notes, critical essays and contributions by Eric Nicholson, Eugenio Refini and Davide Daolmi. Based on new archival research, the substantial opening section reconstructs Bernardi’s unusually colourful life. Bernardi’s works reveal her connections with some of the most pioneering poets, dramatists and musicians of the day, including her mentor Angelo Grillo and the first opera librettist Ottavio Rinuccini. The second major section presents her pastoral tragicomedy Clorilli, one of the earliest secular dramatic works by a woman. It was apparently performed in the early 1590s at a Medici villa near Florence, before Grandduke Ferdinando I de’ Medici, and his consort Christine of Lorraine, but now exists in an enigmatic Venetian manuscript. The third section presents Bernardi’s secular and religious verse, which engaged with new trends in lyric and poetry for music, and was set by various key composers across Italy.

The Burden of Rhyme shows how the nineteenth-century search for the origin of rhyme shaped the theory and practice of poetry. For Victorians, rhyme was not (as it was for the New Critics, and as it still is for us) a mere technique or ahistorical form. Instead, it carried vivid historical fantasies derived from early studies of world literature. Naomi Levine argues that rhyme’s association with the advent of literary modernity and with a repertoire of medievalist, Italophilic, and orientalist myths about love, loss, and poetic longing made it a sensitive historiographic instrument. Victorian poets used rhyme to theorize both literary history and the most elusive effects of aesthetic form. This Victorian formalism, which insisted on the significance of origins, was a precursor to and a challenge for twentieth-century methods. In Karmic Chanting he has assembled many of his most beautiful recent poems. His is a poetry of light and shadow, of shimmering childhood and reflective adulthood: ‘My mind is heavier than my soul,’ he writes, and ‘I wish I had left myself / to the charity of wilderness.’ Here we find something of the tension between inner and outer worlds—and the way one betrays the other—as well as the remembered pain of such perceptions. Here is the poet ‘as a meditating owl / hooting mantras in the zero hour.’ His is a poetry of brilliant metaphors and similes, such as the sight of flags on their flag-poles ‘like fish / trapped by fish hooks’ or the human life lived by daylight assembled for the night as a heap of broken mirrors. A poet of both wilderness and solitude, he speaks to us of the sovereignty of love, of the elasticity and nebulousness of time, but also of the precise knowledge gained at the xiv end of things as he watches a corpse burning ‘in the burning ghat by the sea.’ As he says, so accurately, it’s not that he’s had a favourite face but a favourite perception. Whether he’s thinking of the WhatsApp selfie taken in a glassy arcade in Dubai or the four plastic sunflowers in his bedroom (a harvest from a toxic April in his life), he remains, at all times, the philosopher-poet, the one creating a balancing act between being and non-being. Here, then, is a poetic voice born in the loos, the hot summer winds of Northern India, a voice that speaks to our universal human condition; a poet who speaks to us in a voice as intimate as an eyebrow and as universal as a grandmother.
