Book Renoir in the 20th Century

Download or read book Renoir in the 20th Century written by Auguste Renoir and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2010 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a biography of Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919). Renoir was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. This work dedicates itself to the final three decades of Renoir's career in which the painter turned away from Impressionism and toward a more decorative approach informed by his own idiosyncratic interpretation of art history. During this period, Renoir was initially looking at painters such as Rubens, Titian and Raphael, and dedicating himself to cheery subjects such as bathers, domestic idylls and landscapes that were influenced by both classical mythology and by his relocation to the South of France.

Book Cuban Art in the 20th Century

Download or read book Cuban Art in the 20th Century written by Segundo J. Fernandez and published by Fsu Museum of Fine Arts. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cuban Art in the Twentieth Century is an historical progression of works by important artists from a complex modern movement described by several discrete periods: Colonial, Early Republic, First Generation, Second Generation, Third Generation, Late Modern, and Contemporary Periods. The Cuban modern art movement consists of a loose group of artists, divided into generations, who counted on the moral support of an intellectual elite and who had minimal economic help from the private and public sectors. In spite of a fragile infrastructure, this art movement, along with similar movements in literature and music, played a major role in defining Cuban culture in the twentieth century.

Book The Twentieth Century German Art Exhibition

Download or read book The Twentieth Century German Art Exhibition written by Lucy Wasensteiner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first study dedicated to Twentieth Century German Art, the 1938 London exhibition that was the largest international response to the cultural policies of National Socialist Germany and the infamous Munich exhibition Degenerate Art. Provenance research into the catalogued exhibits has enabled a full reconstruction of the show for the first time: its contents and form, its contributors and their motivations, and its impact both in Britain and internationally. Presenting the research via six case-study exhibits, the book sheds new light on the exhibition and reveals it as one of the largest émigré projects of the period, which drew contributions from scores of German émigré collectors, dealers, art critics, and from the ‘degenerate’ artists themselves. The book explores the show’s potency as an anti-Nazi statement, which prompted a direct reaction from Hitler himself.

Book Collage in Twentieth Century Art Literature and Culture

Download or read book Collage in Twentieth Century Art Literature and Culture written by Rona Cran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing the diversity of twentieth-century collage practices, Rona Cran's book explores the role that it played in the work of Joseph Cornell, William Burroughs, Frank O'Hara, and Bob Dylan. For all four, collage was an important creative catalyst, employed cathartically, aggressively, and experimentally. Collage's catalytic effect, Cran argues, enabled each to overcome a potentially destabilizing crisis in representation. Cornell, convinced that he was an artist and yet hampered by his inability to draw or paint, used collage to gain access to the art world and to show what he was capable of given the right medium. Burroughs' formal problems with linear composition were turned to his advantage by collage, which enabled him to move beyond narrative and chronological requirement. O'Hara used collage to navigate an effective path between plastic art and literature, and to choose the facets of each which best suited his compositional style. Bob Dylan's self-conscious application of collage techniques elevated his brand of rock-and-roll to a level of heightened aestheticism. Throughout her book, Cran shows that to delineate collage stringently as one thing or another is to severely limit our understanding of the work of the artists and writers who came to use it in non-traditional ways.
