Book Twentieth Century Russian Drama

Download or read book Twentieth Century Russian Drama written by Harold B. Segal and published by . This book was released on 1993-11-30 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a survey, in English, of Russian drama since Chekhov. Segal discusses every major aspect of Russian dramatic literature in this century, from Gorky's pre-revolutionary plays through popular drama in the age of the New Economic Policy (1921-28) to the regimentation of the Stalinist and Cold War eras. Segal pays special attention to the suppressed works of experimenters, avant-gardists and dissidents that existed alongside the official government-sanctioned drama of Socialist Realism. New to this edition is material on dramatists writing since the period of perestroika and the collapse of communism.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Twentieth Century Russian Literature

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Twentieth Century Russian Literature written by Evgeny Dobrenko and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Russian history, the twentieth century was an era of unprecedented, radical transformations - changes in social systems, political regimes, and economic structures. A number of distinctive literary schools emerged, each with their own voice, specific artistic character, and ideological background. As a single-volume compendium, the Companion provides a new perspective on Russian literary and cultural development, as it unifies both émigré literature and literature written in Russia. This volume concentrates on broad, complex, and diverse sources - from symbolism and revolutionary avant-garde writings to Stalinist, post-Stalinist, and post-Soviet prose, poetry, drama, and émigré literature, with forays into film, theatre, and literary policies, institutions and theories. The contributors present recent scholarship on historical and cultural contexts of twentieth-century literary development, and situate the most influential individual authors within these contexts, including Boris Pasternak, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Joseph Brodsky, Osip Mandelstam, Mikhail Bulgakov and Anna Akhmatova.

Book Real and Phantom Pains

Book excerpt: The plays selected for this anthology reflect the issues and styles typical of the new wave of dramatic writing in Russia. New drama flourished (almost) exclusively in small spaces, often in dingy basements that employed and accommodated small numbers of people. The big theaters largely turned a blind eye to what was happening on small stages and in backrooms in playhouses, libraries and community centers in a few chosen hot spots around Russia - primarily Moscow, Yekaterinburg and Togliatti. In many cases, they took actively hostile stances toward it. This would change, however. And by the beginning of the century's second decade, new drama was threatening to become a mainstream phenomenon. Not every theater staged plays associated with new drama, but almost every one began staging plays influenced by the themes, methods and language of the new drama movement. "Few people know more about what is happening on the Moscow scene than John Freedman (including few Russians). As Moscow Times theater critic throughout the post-Soviet period John could well have seen more theatrical productions in Russia than anyone else. I can't imagine anyone who would do a better job." Blair A. Ruble, Director, Program on Global Sustainability & Resilience, Woodrow Wilson Center. "The relevance of this anthology is not limited to art or the Fine Arts. New Drama has an implicit politics that should be of interest to political scientists, social historians, and cultural anthropologists of the postSoviet period. As Freedman points out here and elsewhere, the plays provide a 'unique generational perspective' on Russia after the collapse of communism." Caryl Emerson, Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Princeton University. "While other existing volumes focus on 18th, 19th, and early 20th century Russian drama, Freedman's edition would present the unique and important contributions of the new generation of Russian writers portraying the realities and experiences of a post-Soviet generation. John has carefully selected a representative cohort of ten of the most visible, productive, and influential of these writers for the volume." Thomas J. Garza, University Distinguished Teaching Associate Professor, University of Texas at Austin. "Real and Phantom Pains would be of great utility for American theater directors and departments and faculty and students of Russian literature and culture. The anthology is designed with both sets of reader/users in mind, the more so because Freedman is not only an excellent American-English translator of Russian drama, but also a theater professional, having overseen productions of new Russian dramas in the United States." Beth Holmgren, Professor and Chair, Slavic and Eurasian Studies, Duke University. "Freedman's anthology of New Russian drama will be a valuable addition to the marketplace, as so little of Russian drama is produced in the States. The English translations available are often only in British English, with enough strange idioms for American ears that make them less desirable to American theater producers. Having a collection of excellent New Russian drama available will be welcomed amongst the American theatrical community." Preston Whiteway, Executive Director, The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center.

Book excerpt: Plays by Anton Chekhov Second Series; titles from Russian drama reflect the movement towards realism, which began sooner than anywhere else. The Moscow Art Theatre, 1898, led reform of a Russian theater hitherto dominated by melodrama, to one where high-quality drama was made available to the public. That year the theater opened Anton Chekhov's The Seagull. In the early part of the 20th century, Russia experienced a cultural Silver Age, with a significant number of theaters offering realistic or naturalistic theater. After the Russian Revolution, many theater artists left Russia for other countries.

Book A History of Twentieth century Russia

Download or read book A History of Twentieth century Russia written by Robert Service and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia has had an extraordinary history in the twentieth century. As the first Communist society, the USSR was both an admired model and an object of fear and hatred to the rest of the world. How are we to make sense of this history? A History of Twentieth-Century Russia treats the years from 1917 to 1991 as a single period and analyzes the peculiar mixture of political, economic, and social ingredients that made up the Soviet formula. Under a succession of leaders from Lenin to Gorbachev, various methods were used to conserve and strengthen this compound. At times the emphasis was upon shaking up the ingredients, at others upon stabilization. All this occurred against a background of dictatorship, civil war, forcible industrialization, terror, world war, and the postwar arms race. Communist ideas and practices never fully pervaded the society of the USSR. Yet an impact was made and, as this book expertly documents, Russia since 1991 has encountered difficulties in completely eradicating the legacy of Communism. A History of Twentieth-Century Russia is the first work to use the mass of material that has become available in the documentary collections, memoirs, and archives over the past decade. It is an extraordinarily lucid, masterful account of the most complex and turbulent period in Russia's long history.
