Book excerpt: Equal parts memoir and road map to living a less stressful and more vibrant life, bestselling author Jesse Itzler offers an illuminating, entertaining, and unexpected trip for anyone looking to feel calmer and more controlled in our crazy, hectic world. Entrepreneur, endurance athlete, and father of four Jesse Itzler only knows one speed: Full Blast. But when he felt like the world around him was getting too hectic, he didn't take a vacation or get a massage. Instead, Jesse moved into a monastery for a self-imposed time-out. In Living with the Monks, the follow-up to his New York Times bestselling Living with a SEAL, Jesse takes us on a spiritual journey like no other. Having only been exposed to monasteries on TV, Jesse arrives at the New Skete religious community in the isolated mountains of upstate New York with a shaved head and a suitcase filled with bananas. To his surprise, New Skete monks have most of their hair. They're Russian Orthodox, not Buddhist, and they're also world-renowned German shepherd breeders and authors of dog-training books that have sold in the millions. As Jesse struggles to fit in amongst the odd but lovable monks, self-doubt begins to beat like a tribal drum. Questioning his motivation to embark on this adventure and missing his family (and phone), Jesse struggles to balance his desire for inner peace with his need to check Twitter. But in the end, Jesse discovers the undeniable power of the monks and their wisdom, and the very real benefits of taking a well-deserved break as a means of self-preservation in our fast-paced world.

These gentle giants are fiercely loyal to their owners and make great family pets. Great Pyrenees are cuddly, adorable dogs that love to play and have a good time. Download or read book Covert to Overt written by Shepard Fairey and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seminal artist’s recent art and poster works, and his triumphant return to his street-art roots with murals, all in work never before published. Shepard Fairey rose out of the skateboarding scene, creating his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” sticker campaign in the late ’80s, and has since achieved a mainstream recognition that most street artists never find. Fairey’s “Hope” poster, created during Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, is arguably the most iconic American image since Uncle Sam. Fairey has become a pop-culture icon himself, though he has remained true to his street-art roots. OBEY: Covert to Overt showcases his most recent evolution from works on paper to grander art installations, cross-cultural artworks, and music/art collaborations. The book also includes his ubiquitous streetwear and chronicles his return to public artworks. His signature blend of politics, street culture, and art makes Fairey unlike any other subculture/street artist working today. This book showcases the significant amount of art he has created the last several years: street murals, mixed-media installations, art/music events, countless silk screens, and work from his extremely successful OBEY brand.
Download or read book The Age of Surveillance Capitalism written by Shoshana Zuboff and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges to humanity posed by the digital future, the first detailed examination of the unprecedented form of power called "surveillance capitalism," and the quest by powerful corporations to predict and control our behavior. In this masterwork of original thinking and research, Shoshana Zuboff provides startling insights into the phenomenon that she has named surveillance capitalism. The stakes could not be higher: a global architecture of behavior modification threatens human nature in the twenty-first century just as industrial capitalism disfigured the natural world in the twentieth. Zuboff vividly brings to life the consequences as surveillance capitalism advances from Silicon Valley into every economic sector. Vast wealth and power are accumulated in ominous new "behavioral futures markets," where predictions about our behavior are bought and sold, and the production of goods and services is subordinated to a new "means of behavioral modification." The threat has shifted from a totalitarian Big Brother state to a ubiquitous digital architecture: a "Big Other" operating in the interests of surveillance capital. Here is the crucible of an unprecedented form of power marked by extreme concentrations of knowledge and free from democratic oversight. Zuboff's comprehensive and moving analysis lays bare the threats to twenty-first century society: a controlled "hive" of total connection that seduces with promises of total certainty for maximum profit -- at the expense of democracy, freedom, and our human future. With little resistance from law or society, surveillance capitalism is on the verge of dominating the social order and shaping the digital future -- if we let it.

Download or read book German Shepherds Dog Books for Kids written by K. Bennett and published by Mendon Cottage Books. This book was released on 2015-02-08 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German Shepherds - Dog Books for Kids Table of Contents Introduction Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Conclusion Author Bio Introduction "Money will buy a pretty good dog, but it won't buy the wag of his tail." ― Josh Billings German Shepherds are intelligent, versatile and faithful dogs. They have outstanding characteristics, and excel in almost anything they do. This breed is well known and among the 10 most popular breeds in the U.S. But, what makes them so popular? To begin with, their skills extend beyond the home. They are used in law enforcement, serving with police and even the military. They also help with special needs. For example: With those who are handicapped and require constant attention. However, their skills do not end there. Does the name Rin-Tin-Tin ring a bell? He was quite famous and appeared in many movies and shows. He was so popular he received hundreds of fan letters, sometimes thousands per week! And after the World Trade Center disaster, faithful German shepherd dogs risked their lives to comfort rescue workers and help find those who were missing. German shepherds are also excellent watchdogs. Their alert and often suspicious nature, can serve to protect both you and your family from strangers. However, this aspect of their personality may not appeal to you, if you are looking for a more guest friendly dog. This breed has a high energy level. Originally when this dog was first bred, it was for working purposes. The idea was to help herd flocks, get them into groups and so on. This all day task helped to shape a strong and high energy dog that requires a lot of activities to keep their attention. It is important to take note of this part of their personality. Why? Well, if they do not get the attention they need their boredom (even frustration) will shine through, with lots of barking and chewing. Depending on how loud it gets, it may drive you up the wall! Despite this aspect of their personality, there is no doubt German Shepherds are amazing dogs, and a wonderful asset to any home. And with proper training and loving attention, they will stand by you through thick and thin. Not a bad description to add to the list of… man’s best friend!
