Book The 2020 U S Presidential Election

Download or read book The 2020 U S Presidential Election written by Daniel E. Bergan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-05-11 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizens, journalists, and scholars have shown increased interest in candidate violations of democratic norms, ranging from former President Trump’s campaign rhetoric to the Capitol riot. But how unusual are the former President’s actions on the campaign trail? And to what extent do norm violations benefit – or harm – presidential candidates? Other campaign strategies involve social norms around non-elites. For example, some campaign messages emphasize group norms in order to influence turnout and correct misinformed beliefs. How do communications based on group behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes affect voters during presidential campaigns? Chapters in this edited volume explore the communications of the President, and other actors, including groups promoting turnout and fact-checking candidate statements. It uses the historic 2020 U.S. Presidential Campaign to explore the relationship between campaign messages and democratic norms, as well as the potential of social norms to shape election-year behaviors, attitudes, and perceptions among voters. This volume highlights different features of the changing role of democratic and group norms in presidential elections. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Political Marketing.

Book Conservative Government Penal Policy 2015 2021

Download or read book Conservative Government Penal Policy 2015 2021 written by Christopher David Skinns and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book interrogates Conservative government penal policy for adult and young adult offenders in England and Wales between 2015 and 2021. Government penal policy is shown to have been often ineffective and costly, and to have revived efforts to push the system towards a disastrous combination of austerity, outsourcing and punishment that has exacerbated the penal crisis. This investigation has meant touching on topical debates dealing with the impact of resource scarcity on offenders' experiences of the penal system, the impact of an increasing emphasis on punishment on offenders’ sense of justice and fairness, the balance struck between infection control and offender welfare during the government handling of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and why successive Conservative governments have intransigently pursued a penal policy that has proved crisis-exacerbating. The overall conclusion reached is that penal policy is too important to be left to governments alone and needs to be recalibrated by a one-off inquiry, complemented by an on-going advisory body capable of requiring governments to ‘explain or change’. The book is distinctive in that it provides a critical review of penal policy change, whist combining this with insights derived from the sociological analysis of penal trends.

Download or read book Twin Pandemics written by Alison L. Bailey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the COVID-19 pandemic and racial inequities affect the educational assessment of students, either separately or in combination, as the health crisis was viewed as a factor intersecting with and exacerbating existing racial inequities in educational systems. The four empirical papers in this book attend to the challenges of implementing virtual standardized testing during the coronavirus pandemic, the different educational and assessment experiences of diverse groups of school-age students, and the reconsideration of traditional assessment approaches in response to mounting research evidence and growing concerns around enduring social and racial inequities faced by Black, Latinx, Asian, Indigenous, and other non-white citizens and communities. The four conceptual papers focus primarily on the ways in which assessment may contribute to systemic racism and offer potential solutions to move the educational assessment field forward. In totality, the volume offers needed empirical evidence, innovative methodological approaches, and theoretical and substantive examinations of the effects of the twin pandemics. Twin Pandemics will be a key resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of Educational Assessment, Education, Psychometrics, Educational Research, Ethnic Studies, Research Methods, Sociology of Education and Psychology. The chapters included in this book were originally published as a special issue of Educational Assessment.

Download or read book The Walls of Santiago written by Terri Gordon-Zolov and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photo-illustrated record of Chilean protest art, along with reflections on artistic antecedents, global protest movements, and the long shadow cast by Chile’s authoritarian past. From October 2019 until the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, Chile was convulsed by protests and political upheaval, as what began as civil disobedience transformed into a vast resistance movement. Throughout, the most striking aspects of the protests were the murals, graffiti, and other political graphics that became ubiquitous in Chilean cities. Authors Terri Gordon-Zolov and Eric Zolov were in Santiago to witness and document the protests from their very beginning. The book is beautifully illustrated with over 150 photographs taken throughout the protests. Additional photos will be available on the publisher’s website. From the introduction: In the conclusion, we take stock of the crisis of the nation-state in the contemporary era. This chapter brings events into the present moment, noting the ways President Piñera took advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to reclaim the streets of Santiago, a phenomenon echoed in countries across the globe. While most of the global protest movements were forced to go underground (or into the ether), the Black Lives Matter movement surged in the United States and drew massive amounts of support both domestically and abroad, suggesting a continued wave of grassroots protests. We close with reflections on the continued relevance of walls in a virtual world, the testimonial role that protest graphics play, and the future outlook for revolutionary movements in Chile and worldwide.

Download or read book Overconfident written by Roberta Gatti and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-10-06 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overconfident: How Economic and Health Fault Lines Left the Middle East and North Africa Ill-Prepared to Face COVID This report examines the region’s economic prospects in 2021, forecasting that the recovery will be both tenuous and uneven as per capita GDP level stays below pre-pandemic levels. COVID-19 was a stress-test for the region’s public health systems, which were already overwhelmed even before the pandemic. Indeed, a decade of lackluster economic reforms left a legacy of large public sectors and high public debt that effectively crowded out investments in social services such as public health. This edition points out that the region’s health systems were not only ill-prepared for the pandemic, but suffered from over-confidence, as authorities painted an overly optimistic picture in self-assessments of health system preparedness. Going forward, governments must improve data transparency for public health and undertake reforms to remedy historical underinvestment in public health systems.
