Book excerpt: In the Dutch countryside the war seems far away. For most people, at least. But not for Ed, a Jew in Nazi-occupied Holland trying to find some safe sanctuary. Compelled to go into hiding in the rural province of Zeeland, he is taken in by a seemingly benevolent family of farmers. But, as Ed comes to realize, the Van 't Westeindes are not what they seem. Camiel, the son of the house, is still in mourning for his best friend, a German soldier who committed suicide the year before. And Camiel's fiery, unstable sister Mariete begins to nurse a growing unrequited passion for their young guest, just as Ed realizes his own attraction to Camiel. As time goes by, Ed is drawn into the domestic intrigues around him, and the farmhouse that had begun as his refuge slowly becomes his prison.

Download or read book Lowering the Bar written by Marc Galanter and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2006-08-08 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you call 600 lawyers at the bottom of the sea? Marc Galanter calls it an opportunity to investigate the meanings of a rich and time-honored genre of American humor: lawyer jokes. Lowering the Bar analyzes hundreds of jokes from Mark Twain classics to contemporary anecdotes about Dan Quayle, Johnnie Cochran, and Kenneth Starr. Drawing on representations of law and lawyers in the mass media, political discourse, and public opinion surveys, Galanter finds that the increasing reliance on law has coexisted uneasily with anxiety about the “legalization” of society. Informative and always entertaining, his book explores the tensions between Americans’ deep-seated belief in the law and their ambivalence about lawyers.
Download or read book Theology written by John Warwick Montgomery and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author’s Introduction: As this book’s subtitle has it, it’s a “potpourri.” That expression can be defined as “a mixture of dried petals and spices placed in a bowl to perfume a room.” But, having just published—at New Reformation Press—a little culinary masterpiece (A Gastronomic Vade-Mecum), I am thinking in terms of the secondary definition: “an unusual or interesting mixture of ingredients.” Either way, you will surely enjoy this collection of essays. They are unusual and interesting—and they will perfume your thinking as to ultimate issues. A sampling of essays in the present collection: • Resurrection and Legal Evidence • Did Jesus Physically Rise from the Dead? • Chronological Contradictions in the Gospels? • A More Consistent Application of Literary “Higher Criticism” • A Short and Easie Method with Postmodernists • Law & Morality: Friends or Foes? • Demon Possession: A Brief Commentary • Transhumanism? • Muslims As Two-Faced • The Stereotypic Clergyman • On Innovative Theologians • Racism in American Lutheranism • Do Christian Children lose Contact with Reality? • Those Who Have Not Heard the Gospel: A Construct • Terrorism and Revolution: Are They Ever Justified? Professor Montgomery, who is an American, British, and French citizen and who resides in Strasbourg, France, is a polymath, the author of more than 60 books in 5 languages, and a world-renowned defender of classic Christian faith. Download or read book Fools Are Everywhere written by Beatrice K. Otto and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-04 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lively work, Beatrice K. Otto takes us on a journey around the world in search of one of the most colorful characters in history—the court jester. Though not always clad in cap and bells, these witty, quirky characters crop up everywhere, from the courts of ancient China and the Mogul emperors of India to those of medieval Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. With a wealth of anecdotes, jokes, quotations, epigraphs, and illustrations (including flip art), Otto brings to light little-known jesters, highlighting their humanizing influence on people with power and position and placing otherwise remote historical figures in a more idiosyncratic, intimate light. Most of the work on the court jester has concentrated on Europe; Otto draws on previously untranslated classical Chinese writings and other sources to correct this bias and also looks at jesters in literature, mythology, and drama. Written with wit and humor, Fools Are Everywhere is the most comprehensive look at these roguish characters who risked their necks not only to mock and entertain but also to fulfill a deep and widespread human and social need.

Download or read book Cultivating Inspired Leaders written by Bruce M. Lansdale and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultivating Inspired Leaders is about becoming an 'inspired and inspirational leader-manager,' regardless of position in an organisation. Such individuals see their role as participants in the management process, working with associates, developing leadership skills among those around them and cultivating managerial skills within themselves and fellow team members. This book asserts that managers progress in stages from their traditional roles as administrators to that of 'leader-manager' with the capability and eagerness to cultivate leadership, then ultimately to 'inspired and inspirational leader-manager' with a sense of dedication and commitment to their organisation, associates and spirit within themselves. Author Bruce Lansdale reveals the path toward this enlightened goal with a wealth of experience and humour gained during his years at the American Farm School.

Download or read book Ferghana Valley written by S. Frederick Starr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ferghana Valley can reasonably be said to lie in the heart of Central Asia. As such, the Valley has made an inordinate contribution to the history and culture of the region as a whole, as well as significantly affecting the economic, political and religious spheres. This book looks at the region over time, from its early history to the present. It embraces not just the obvious fields of politics, economics and religion, but also ethnography, sociology and culture, and includes the insights of leading scholars from all three Ferghana countries. The book discusses various questions of identity relating to the region, showing how the identity of the Ferghana Valley relates to the emerging national identities of the three post-colonial states that are still gradually emerging from the demise of the Soviet Union, as well as how an understanding of the Ferghana Valley is key to understanding Central Asia itself.

Download or read book The Tragicomic Passion written by Faye Ran and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1994 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tragicomic Mode of literary discourse has become more prominent in the twentieth century than at any other previous time in Western literary history. Modern tragicomedy consists of four defining categories: an inconclusive double perspective, one lacking resolution, reconciliation or restitution: contradictory, ambivalent or incongruous mood and effect: a problematic and often protean protagonist and the incorporation of destabilizing and non-naturalistic modes or strategies such as surrealism, absurdity, fantasy, and the grotesque. The dualistic nature of tragicomic creation, perception and reflection, has led to a whole new sense of character, structure and the role of the protagonist or of the protagonist or «hero». These new protagonists reject the notion of reality as a closed system with finite possibilities. Theirs' is a prismatic refraction of the rational and irrational, the mundane and the transcendental, the normative and the anomalous. Their ubiquitous presence in tragicomedy exemplifies our modern penchant for dialectical subversiveness and multifaceted indeterminancy. In twentieth-century tragicomic drama, film and literature, writers, dramatists and filmmakers invariably choose antinomian protagonists or fool figures to embody their explorations of the universal and tragicomic encounter of self and society.
