Book excerpt: I'm known as Bob423 along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) and this September will be my tenth trip down the ICW to Key West. I've made every mistake in the book except sink the boat. Why not learn from my mishaps and avoid all the potential misadventures on your own cruise? My guide covers what I've learned about cruising the ICW over the past ten years and how to avoid the mud in shallow areas. What's new in the 2019 Edition:- All charts have been updated and redone with Aqua Map's rendition of the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) survey charts that include my track through the over 100 shallow areas in a blue dotted line and in many cases, a GPX route too so you will know exactly how to safely proceed. - Each of the 12 legs of the trip south to Key West is now introduced with a wide area chart showing the hazards ahead with mile markers for planning a day's cruise. - I've added two new chapters: Basic Knowledge on the ICW that all cruisers should know and further study, if desired, in the ICW University chapter covering nine topics to enhance your ICW experience.- GPX routes and tracks have been greatly expanded as further navigation aids. - All sections on cruising resources and recommendations have been updated. There are lots of new products out there that will ease your way south, why not take advantage of them?- If you buy the paperback book the eBook will be free again this year. It has all the active links so you don't have to look up any of the recommendations I reference in the paperback. I will also publish a page by page list of active links on my blog site at fleetwing.blogsite.com if for some reason you don't want to download the eBook. Thanks for considering the purchase of my guide. The links have been left in blue to show they can be accessed in the eBook with a tap. Please leave a review on Amazon.com. Book 2016 ICW Cruising Guide

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Sherer
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2016-07-16
  • ISBN : 9781535257176
  • Pages : 206 pages

Download or read book 2016 ICW Cruising Guide written by Robert Sherer and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'm known as Bob423 in postings on Active Captain and this is my second edition of the ICW Cruising Guide. The focus of this guide is to aid the boater in safely navigating the 100 or so shallow areas of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) with full-page color charts for each hazard and directions for safe passage. The guide is not a complete compendium of all marinas and anchorages; there are plenty of other guides for that. However, it does include the marinas and anchorages we've found spaced conveniently for ICW travel and where there's pet relief easily available. Also included are lists of how to get ready for the trip and tips on making life more enjoyable on the waterway. For the 2016 edition, the charts have been enlarged to show better detail and buoys now have their own labels (G3, R4, etc.) in larger type for easy reading. Where not obvious, the charts have a yellow line showing the deepest water I found during my trip north in the spring of 2016. Each chart has a mile marker location along with the minimum water found through the hazard as part of the hazard title at the top of each page. All of the information on finding the deepest route through a hazard is from my personal experiences in six years of cruising the ICW, updated on my spring trip north in 2016. Nothing is second hand except I did include hydrographic charts from Wilmington and Charleston ACOE where available to aid in transiting the worse of the shallow areas. This year I have included waypoints for many of the most difficult areas such as Hell Gate, Fernandina, Jekyll Creek and a few others. It can be very tedious manually entering the waypoints not to mention being error prone so I've posted the waypoints as GPX Routes on my blog site at fleetwing.blogspot.com in the Pages section. Since I use an iPad, I've also included instructions on how to transfer the GPX routes into the iPad for both the Navimatics Charts and Tides app and also the Garmin Mobile app. Once loaded, you will be following the same route I used in finding the depths I reported in the spring of 2016. The advice section has been updated with the latest iPad apps and links in the ebook version have been checked to be sure they work. Many of the advice comments didn't change, after all there's a base level of things to do that does not change year to year but there are still updates with additional experiences. Thank you for considering the purchase of the guide. The links have been left in blue with an underline. I've posted the active links on my blog page at fleetwing.blogspace.com so you don't have to google anything, just find the link in the list and click. Please leave a review on Amazon.com, all reviews are helpful to other boaters considering a trip down the ICW. Bob423, aka Robert and Ann Sherer

Book 2018 ICW Cruising Guide

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Sherer
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018-07-30
  • ISBN : 9781724408112
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book 2018 ICW Cruising Guide written by Robert Sherer and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'm known as Bob423 along the ICW and this September will be my 9th trip down the ICW. I've learned a lot, mostly the hard way but it doesn't have to be that way. Why not learn from my mistakes? The guide contains a summary of lessons learned in getting ready for and in traveling the ICW. It is focused on how to safely navigate the shallows of the ICW with marinas and anchorages I've found convenient along the way. This year's edition runs 225 pages, it seems to grow every year. What's new in the 2018 Edition:- Safe passage routes change every year through the shallows of the ICW. The guide provides a full-page chart for each hazard in color with my route in the spring of 2018 shown as a red dotted line. You will know my exact path in finding the depths I report in my guide. - All charts have been redone using Aqua Map's excellent charting database available through either their iPad or Android app. Their charts are updated four times a year, a must on the ICW.- Bridge clearances have been tabulated and shown in graphical format. On my 2018 spring trip northward, I took a photo of the height boards on every fixed bridge. I noted the day and time I passed under each bridge which I used to compute the clearance at high tide and also at 0.0 tide. The results surprised me on how many bridges had less than 65 ft of clearance, even at low tide!- The list of best navigation apps has been changed dramatically from 2017. The new player on the block, Aqua Map, has leaped over competitors in many features (but I still use Navionics too). - More GPX routes have been added for downloading. With Aqua Map, the download of a GPX route could not be simpler.- I Joined Waterway Guide as an On-The-Water Editor, I've updated the Waterway Guide Alert icons for current information as referenced in the guide and will be maintained through the year to reflect current conditions at an Alert location. - All sections have been updated. Products evolve and what was best last year may not be best this year. However, not everything changes and much of the "getting ready" steps for setting out remain familiar from last year.- The eBook is free when you purchase the paper version of the guide. Amazon will recognize if you bought the paper version and will allow the eBook to be downloaded at no charge. All the links you see underlined in blue are active links in the eBook. It's a great time saver in looking up recommendations on apps, marinas, restaurants, and electronics. Thank you for considering the purchase of the guide. The links have been left in blue with an underline. I've posted the active links on my blog page at fleetwing.blogspot.com in the ICW Tips section so you don't have to google anything, just find the link in the list and click. If you purchased the book then the ebook version is free on Amazon.com. Please leave a review on Amazon.com, all reviews are helpful to other boaters considering a trip down the ICW.

Book A Cruising Guide to New Jersey Waters

Download or read book A Cruising Guide to New Jersey Waters written by Donald Launer and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book in hand, boaters can cruise down the Jersey Shore--from New York Harbor to Delaware Bay--in the good company of Captain Donald Launer. Captain Launer brings many years of experience as a skipper of small boats to this engaging nautical and historical guide to New Jersey's tidal waters. Cruise with him from the New Jersey/New York state line near the mouth of the Hudson River, past Raritan Bay and Sandy Hook, and into the Manasquan Inlet. From there, he gives you a choice of voyages: the inside route through the Intracoastal Waterway to Toms River, Barnegat Bay, Atlantic City, and Cape May, or taking the offshore passage. Then you explore the Delaware Bay and its tributaries and cruise up the Delaware River to Trenton. This revised edition contains updated information about onshore facilities, marinas, restaurants, stores, sites of interest, docking fees, bridge heights, maritime service stations, weather, navigation, and safety, as well as post-September 11 regulations in the waters around New York City. The book also includes a wealth of photographs and sea charts. Donald Launer, who holds a U.S. Coast Guard captain's license, has explored the New Jersey waters in every kind of small craft since he first sailed in Barnegat Bay at the age of eight. His articles on recreational boating have appeared in Good Old Boat Magazine, Cruising World, The Beachcomber, Offshore, and Sail. He berths his schooner, Delphinus, in Forked River, New Jersey.
