Book excerpt: - Water resources management should be assessed under climate change conditions, as historic data cannot replicate future climatic conditions. - Climate change impacts on water resources are bound to affect all water uses, i.e., irrigated agriculture, domestic and industrial water supply, hydropower generation, and environmental flow (of streams and rivers) and water level (of lakes). - Bottom-up approaches, i.e., the forcing of hydrologic simulation models with climate change models’ outputs, are the most common engineering practices and considered as climate-resilient water management approaches. - Hydrologic simulations forced by climate change scenarios derived from regional climate models (RCMs) can provide accurate assessments of the future water regime at basin scales. - Irrigated agriculture requires special attention as it is the principal water consumer and alterations of both precipitation and temperature patterns will directly affect agriculture yields and incomes. - Integrated water resources management (IWRM) requires multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, with climate change to be an emerging cornerstone in the IWRM concept.

For comparison, cases from the Americas (whales in the Arctic, sea turtles in the Caribbean, and plants in the Amazon) and Central Asia are also included. The relationship between plants, animals, and humans in Asia is quite unique from a global perspective. For example, "satoyama" in Japan means ecotone area, or the boundary between a village and a forest. There, as the number of inhabitants declines, bears, wild boars, and other animals increasingly ravage crops, sometimes attacking humans as well. By showing the regional nature of human-animal and human-plant interactions in Asia, this book provides for the first time a framework for understanding the world's animal and plant-human relationships. It is assumed that the relationships between humans and animals and plants during this period were diverse, including hunting, taming, semi-domestication, and full domestication. At the same time, for regions outside of Asia, the extent to which these diverse relationships were adapted and how diversity was formed is explained from the perspective of historical ecology. Book excerpt: Forestry today, like many other sectors that traditionally rely on material goods, faces significant global drivers of societal change that are less often addressed than the environmental concerns commonly in the spotlight of scientific, political, and news media. There are three major interconnected issues that are challenging forestry at its foundation: urbanization, tertiarization, and globalization. These issues are at the core of this book. The urbanization of society, a process in development from the first steps of industrialization, is particularly significant today with the predominance and quick growth rate of the world’s urban population. Ongoing urbanization is creating new perspectives on forestry, inducing changes in its social representation, and changing lifestyles and practices with a tendency toward dematerialization. The process of urbanization is also creating a disconnect and in some ways is leaving behind rurality, the sector of society where forestry has traditionally developed and taken place over centuries. The second issue covered in this book is the tertiarization of the economy. In society today, the sector of services largely dominates the economy and occupies the major part of the world’s active population. Book excerpt: The FAO-EU forest law enforcement, governance and trade (FLEGT) programme seeks to reduce and eventually eliminate illegal logging. With the support of its donors, the European Union, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the FAO-EU FLEGT Programme funds projects created by governments, civil society and private sector organizations in Latin America, Africa and Asia to improve forest governance and promote trade in legal timber products on domestic and international markets. The Programme works in support of the European Commission’s Action Plan on FLEGT to promote the legal production and consumption of timber. The evaluation looked at the third phase of the programme, which remained a significant contribution to the goals of the FLEGT Action Plan. The increased capacity of service providers (particularly beginner non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations) and micro, small and medium-sized enterprise associations was considered the most significant change generated by the programme. The promotion of South-South cooperation proved to be an important aspect of capacity enhancement. Thanks to increased capacities, but also multi-stakeholder platforms and improved policy and regulative tools, a positive incipient impact on more inclusive forest governance has been achieved. More information and independent forest monitoring provided an important contribution to improved enabling conditions for legal timber trade and on the information of timber legality, even though the actual market impact is still limited. Recommendations to FAO and its project partners and stakeholders include actions to take away institutional, fiscal, technical and political barriers to scale up results, and actions to strengthen the sustainability of results, gender equity and social inclusion, knowledge management as well as monitoring and evaluation.
