Book excerpt: Before planet Earth was called into being, the power of Darkness prevailed, absolute in its totality, uncompromising in its persistence. Then, the word was spoken, ""Let there be Light."" Darkness acquiesced, grudgingly. Since that time, Darkness has endeavored to reclaim its dominance over the presence of Light. Through a relentless regimen of manipulation, seduction and fear, the power of Darkness continues to, aggressively increase its casualty count against humanity. The Calendar is a parable about a coastal, New England town that stands, obviously, in the cross-hairs of the power of Darkness. A church, at the center of the town, represents the crowning jewel that must be claimed to memorialize the significance of this victory. Darkness summons its faithful minion, the spirit of Death. Immediately, the church's pastor of 42 years succumbs, leaving its flock without a shepherd. Darkness, then instructs its disciples to concoct a diabolical plan to bring in a replacement pastor who will answer...

Book The Mosaic of Atonement

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joshua M. McNall
  • Publisher : Zondervan Academic
  • Release : 2019-08-27
  • ISBN : 0310097657
  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book The Mosaic of Atonement written by Joshua M. McNall and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mosaic of Atonement offers a fresh and integrated approach to historic models of atonement. While modern treatments of the doctrine have tended toward either a defensive hierarchy, in which one model is singled out as most important, or a disconnected plurality, in which multiple images are affirmed but with no order of arrangement, this book argues for a reintegration of four famous "pieces" of atonement doctrine through the governing image of Christ-shaped mosaic. Unlike a photograph in which tiny pixels present a seamless blending of color and shape, a mosaic allows each piece to retain its recognizable particularity, while also integrating them in the service of a single larger image. If one stands close, one can identify individual squares of glass or tile that compose the greater picture. And if one steps back, there is the larger picture to be admired. Yet in the great mosaics of age-old Christian churches, the goal is not for viewers to construct the image, as in a puzzle, but to appreciate it. So too with this mosaic of atonement doctrine. While no one model is set above or against the others, the book notes particular ways in which the "pieces"--the feet, heart, head, and hands--mutually support one another to form a more holistic vision of Christ's work. "This is my body," Jesus said to his followers, and by reintegrating these oft-dismembered aspects of atonement, we will note fresh ways in which it was given for us.

Book I d Like You More If You Were More like Me

Download or read book I d Like You More If You Were More like Me written by John Ortberg and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I’d Like You More If You Were More like Me takes on one of life’s most important questions: How can I get closer to God and other people? We were created for deep connections. When people have deep connections, says John Ortberg, they win in life. When they don’t have deep connections, they cannot win in life. I’d Like You More if You Were More like Me offers help in overcoming one of the biggest obstacles to making deep connections: the fact that we’re so different. Different from God and different from each other. The good news is that connectedness is not based on similarity, but on shared experiences. When one person invites another to share an experience, they’re connected. It can be sharing a beautiful sunset or a meal, having a great conversation over cup of coffee, going for walk, or even teasing somebody. And when we share those same experiences with God, we get closer to him, too. God wants to connect with us—so much that he sent his son to live as a human being. God took on flesh and shared every human experience. So we don’t have to wonder what a close relationship with God looks like anymore. An intimate relationship with God and other people doesn’t have to be a cliché, it can be a daily way of life.

Book Chris Ofili Paradise Lost

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chris Ofili
  • Publisher : David Zwirner Books
  • Release : 2018-09-11
  • ISBN : 1941701825
  • Pages : 97 pages

Download or read book Chris Ofili Paradise Lost written by Chris Ofili and published by David Zwirner Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2017, Chris Ofili photographed chain-link fences throughout the island of Trinidad in order to explore notions of beauty, community, liberation, and constraint. This series of arresting images—“pocket photography,” as described by the artist—is the first body of photography ever published by Ofili. Through these entrancing black-and-white photographs, the artist engages with the diverse sources that inspired his critically acclaimed Paradise Lost exhibition at David Zwirner, New York in the fall of 2017. Since moving to Trinidad in 2005, Ofili has continued to engage with the surrounding environment and culture, which has found its way into many of his colorful paintings. In these deceivingly simple black-and-white photographs, he captures a wide cross section of Trinidad as he highlights the encounter between natural and man-made settings, and the different aesthetic possibilities each brings out in the other. In focusing on a ubiquitous and seemingly unremarkable piece of equipment, Ofili is able to comment on our interactions with space and each other, using a near-universal subject as the fence slices the sky, melds into a tree, frames a basketball game, or reveals an opening. In a new essay by the critically acclaimed author of Island People: The Caribbean and the World (2016), Joshua Jelly-Schapiro charts the history of chain-link fences; focusing on a selection of Ofili’s photographs, he then begins to explore what this imagery tells us about Trinidad in particular and the Caribbean as a whole. These two essays—one visual, the other literary—open onto a whole new set of interpretive possibilities for this groundbreaking artist.
