Download or read book Children of Katrina written by Alice Fothergill and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When children experience upheaval and trauma, adults often view them as either vulnerable and helpless or as resilient and able to easily “bounce back.” But the reality is far more complex for the children and youth whose lives are suddenly upended by disaster. How are children actually affected by catastrophic events and how do they cope with the damage and disruption? Children of Katrina offers one of the only long-term, multiyear studies of young people following disaster. Sociologists Alice Fothergill and Lori Peek spent seven years after Hurricane Katrina interviewing and observing several hundred children and their family members, friends, neighbors, teachers, and other caregivers. In this book, they focus intimately on seven children between the ages of three and eighteen, selected because they exemplify the varied experiences of the larger group. They find that children followed three different post-disaster trajectories—declining, finding equilibrium, and fluctuating—as they tried to regain stability. The children’s moving stories illuminate how a devastating disaster affects individual health and well-being, family situations, housing and neighborhood contexts, schooling, peer relationships, and extracurricular activities. This work also demonstrates how outcomes were often worse for children who were vulnerable and living in crisis before the storm. Fothergill and Peek clarify what kinds of assistance children need during emergency response and recovery periods, as well as the individual, familial, social, and structural factors that aid or hinder children in getting that support.
Download or read book The Rise of a New Media Baron and the Emerging Threat of News Deserts written by Penelope Muse Abernathy and published by Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, divided into four sections, documents dramatic changes over the past decade. With the industry in distress, local newspapes are shrinking, and some are vanishing. At the same time, a new type of newspaper owner has emerged, very different from traditional publishers, the best of whom sought to balance business interests with civic responsibilty to the community where their paper was located. As newspapers confront an uncertain future, the choices these new owners make could determine whether vast 'news deserts' arise in communities and regions throughout the country. This has implications not just for the communities where these papers are located, but also, in the long-term, for all of America."--page 5.

This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statewide and Nonmetropolitan Transportation Planning - Metropolitan Transportation Planning (US Federal Highway Administration Regulation) (FHWA) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Statewide and Nonmetropolitan Transportation Planning - Metropolitan Transportation Planning (US Federal Highway Administration Regulation) (FHWA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 The FHWA and FTA are jointly issuing this final rule to update the regulations governing the development of metropolitan transportation plans (MTP) and programs for urbanized areas, long-range statewide transportation plans and programs, and the congestion management process as well as revisions related to the use of and reliance on planning products developed during the planning process for project development and the environmental review process. The changes reflect the passage of the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) and the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. The MAP-21 continues many provisions related to transportation planning from prior laws; however, it introduces transformational changes and adds some new provisions. The FAST Act makes minor edits to existing provisions. The changes make the regulations consistent with current statutory requirements and implement the following: A new mandate for State departments of transportation (hereafter referred to simply as "States") and metropolitan planning organizations (MPO) to take a performance-based approach to planning and programming; a new emphasis on the nonmetropolitan transportation planning process, by requiring States to have a higher level of involvement with nonmetropolitan local officials and providing a process for the creation of regional transportation planning organizations (RTPO); a structural change to the membership of the larger MPOs; a new framework for voluntary scenario planning; new authority for the integration of the planning and environmental review processes; and a process for programmatic mitigation plans. This book contains: - The complete text of the Statewide and Nonmetropolitan Transportation Planning - Metropolitan Transportation Planning (US Federal Highway Administration Regulation) (FHWA) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section

Download or read book Facing the Unexpected written by Ronald W. Perry and published by Joseph Henry Press. This book was released on 2001-11-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing the Unexpected presents the wealth of information derived from disasters around the world over the past 25 years. The authors explore how these findings can improve disaster programs, identify remaining research needs, and discuss disaster within the broader context of sustainable development. How do different people think about disaster? Are we more likely to panic or to respond with altruism? Why are 110 people killed in a Valujet crash considered disaster victims while the 50,000 killed annually in traffic accidents in the U.S. are not? At the crossroads of social, cultural, and economic factors, this book examines these and other compelling questions. The authors review the influences that shape the U.S. governmental system for disaster planning and response, the effectiveness of local emergency agencies, and the level of professionalism in the field. They also compare technological versus natural disaster and examine the impact of technology on disaster programs.
