Book Energy Efficient Computing and Data Centers

Download or read book Energy Efficient Computing and Data Centers written by Luigi Brochard and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-09-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data centers consume roughly 1% of the total electricity demand, while ICT as a whole consumes around 10%. Demand is growing exponentially and, left unchecked, will grow to an estimated increase of 20% or more by 2030. This book covers the energy consumption and minimization of the different data center components when running real workloads, taking into account the types of instructions executed by the servers. It presents the different air- and liquid-cooled technologies for servers and data centers with some real examples, including waste heat reuse through adsorption chillers, as well as the hardware and software used to measure, model and control energy. It computes and compares the Power Usage Effectiveness and the Total Cost of Ownership of new and existing data centers with different cooling designs, including free cooling and waste heat reuse leading to the Energy Reuse Effectiveness. The book concludes by demonstrating how a well-designed data center reusing waste heat to produce chilled water can reduce energy consumption by roughly 50%, and how renewable energy can be used to create net-zero energy data centers.

Book Nanomanufacturing Handbook

Download or read book Nanomanufacturing Handbook written by Ahmed Busnaina and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breakthroughs in nanotechnology have been coming at a rapid pace over the past few years. This was fueled by significant worldwide investments by governments and industry. But if these promising young technologies cannot begin to show commercial viability soon, that funding is in danger of disappearing as investors lose their appetites and the economic and scientific promise of nanotechnology may not be realized. Scrutinizing the barriers to commercial scale-up of nanotechnologies, the Nanomanufacturing Handbook presents a broad survey of the research being done to bring nanotechnology out of the laboratory and into the factory. Current research into nanotechnology focuses on the underlying science, but as this forward-looking handbook points out, the immediate need is for research into scale-up, process robustness, and system integration issues. Taking that message to heart, this book collects cutting-edge research from top experts who examine such topics as surface-programmed assembly, fabrication and applications of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) including nanoelectronics, manufacturing nanoelectrical contacts, room-temperature nanoimprint and nanocontact technologies, nanocontacts and switch reliability, defects and surface preparation, and other innovative, application-driven initiatives. In addition to these technical issues, the author provides a survey of the current state of nanomanufacturing in the United States—the first of its kind—and coverage also reaches into patenting nanotechnologies as well as regulatory and societal issues. With timely, authoritative coverage accompanied by numerous illustrations, the Nanomanufacturing Handbook clarifies the current challenges facing industrial-scale nanotechnologies and outlines advanced tools and strategies that will help overcome them.

Book Transition to Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles

Download or read book Transition to Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles written by Selim Koca and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving a successful transition to hydrogen-powered vehicles in the U.S. automotive market will require strong and sustained commitment by hydrogen producers, vehicle manufacturers, transporters and retailers, consumers and governments. The interaction of these agents in the marketplace will determine the real costs and benefits of early market transformation policies, and ultimately the success of the transition itself. Furthermore, the transition to hydrogen-powered transportation faces imposing economic barriers. The authors of this book analyse the hydrogen infrastructure analysis and deployment scenarios, policy options for supporting hydrogen energy infrastructure and vehicle developments during the transition to they hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and the costs of implementing selected policy options to encourage the transition to hydrogen. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

Book Electric Hybrid and Fuel Cell Vehicles

Download or read book Electric Hybrid and Fuel Cell Vehicles written by Amgad Elgowainy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of "Encyclopedia of Sustainability Science and Technology, Second Edition," covers the electrification of vehicles, which is key to a sustainable future of transportation in both light-duty and heavy-duty vehicle sectors to address global concerns of climate change, air pollutant emissions, energy efficiency and energy security. Vehicle electrification includes several existing and emerging technologies and powertrain architectures such as conventional hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrids with various electric driving range, short- and long-range battery electric vehicles, as well as hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Electrification will be key to connected autonomous vehicles, which are perceived to improve mobility, increase safety, reduce energy consumption and infrastructure costs, improve productivity, decrease traffic congestion and increase customer satisfaction. While electrification of vehicle technologies is relatively mature, technology improvement and economies of scale are needed to compete against incumbent technologies and to realize their benefits in the marketplace. Significant infrastructure development is needed in the case of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and to a lesser extent for plug-in electric vehicles. Vehicle efficiency improvement is sought through a combination of several approaches, including weight reduction, engine downsizing, increased engine compression ratio with high octane fuels, and the use of compression ignition engines with low octane fuels. Liquid hydrocarbon fuels are needed in applications where high storage energy density is required such as long-haul class-8 combination heavy-duty trucks. Shared mobility is another emerging concept that enables access to transportation services on an as-needed basis. This approach can enhance accessibility to transportation, decrease number of vehicles on the road, reduce energy use and impact on the environment, reduce cost of transportation and the need for parking, and reduce transportation time between origin and destination. In all, the reader will receive a comprehensive introduction to electric vehicles and technology trends, including energy storage, in light-, medium-, and heavy-duty sectors, as well as the infrastructure development that will be required to realize these benefits for society.
