Book A Practical Guide to Observational Astronomy

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Observational Astronomy written by M. Shane Burns and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Practical Guide to Observational Astronomy provides a practical and accessible introduction to the ideas and concepts that are essential to making and analyzing astronomical observations. A key emphasis of the book is on how modern astronomy would be impossible without the extensive use of computers, both for the control of astronomical instruments and the subsequent data analysis. Astronomers now need to use software to access and assess the data they produce, so understanding how to use computers to control equipment and analyze data is as crucial to modern astronomers as a telescope. Therefore, this book contains an array of practical problems for readers to test their knowledge, in addition to a wealth of examples and tutorials using Python on the author’s website, where readers can download and create image processing scripts. This is an excellent study guide or textbook for an observational astronomy course for advanced undergraduate and graduate astronomy and physics students familiar with writing and running simple Python scripts. Key Features Contains the latest developments and technologies from astronomical observatories and telescope facilities on the ground and in space Accompanied by a companion website with examples, tutorials, Python scripts, and resources Authored by an observational astronomer with over thirty years of observing and teaching experience About the Author M. Shane Burns earned his BA in physics at UC San Diego in 1979. He began graduate work at UC Berkeley in 1979, where he worked on an automated search for nearby supernovae. After being awarded a PhD in 1985, Professor Burns became a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Wyoming. He spent the summer of 1988 as a visiting scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, where he helped found the Supernova Cosmology Project (SCP). He continued to work as a member of the SCP group while a faculty member at Harvey Mudd College, the US Air Force Academy, and Colorado College. The 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to the leader of the SCP for the group’s "discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae." During his career, Professor Burns has observed using essentially all of the world’s great observatories, including the Keck Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope.

Out of this door might come something...unknown." --Sergio Bertolucci, Director for Research and Scientific Computing at CERNCERN is easily one of the most secretive organizations of our times. With controversy and conspiracy theories abounding, it takes specialized researchers to weed through the lies in order to find the truth. But sometimes, truth is stranger--and far scarier--than fiction. This is where internationally celebrated investigative researcher Dr. Thomas R. Horn and "Into the Multiverse" television host Josh Peck arrive to expose the reality of a plan so nefarious that it involves not only the history of Apollyon-Abaddon, but his near-future fulfillment of biblical prophecy and entrance into the world. Book Femininity and the Physically Active Woman

Download or read book Femininity and the Physically Active Woman written by Precilla Y. L. Choi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do fewer women than men exercise? What is the ‘sporty’ type? The fitness boom of the last two decades has led to many people incorporating exercise into their lifestyles through activities such as jogging and aerobics. However, whilst many physical and psychological health benefits have been documented, far too few people actually take part in enough exercise to glean significant improvements, and this is much more a problem for women and men. Femininity and the Physically Active Woman explores one reason many women offer for their lack of involvement in sport and exercise – that they are not the ‘sporty’ type. Precilla Y.L. Choi argues that the ‘sporty’ type is masculine, and to determine how this notion might affect women’s self-perceptions, she critically examines the experiences of women athletes, bodybuilders, recreational exercisers and girls’ physical education. What emerges is the importance of visible differences between women and men, in terms of muscularity, strength and agility in order to maintain the gender order. Thus if a girl or woman wishes to play the masculine game of sport she most do so in conformity with a number of patriarchal rules which ensure she is first and foremost recognised as heterosexual feminine being. Contributing to a psychology of the physically active woman by examining women’s experiences from critical feminist and gendered perspectives, Femininity and the Physically Active Woman will be of great interest to students, researchers, practitioners and teachers from a range of disciplines.

  • Pages : 365 pages

Book excerpt: Body Image: Understanding Body Dissatisfaction in Men, Women and Children presents a review of what is presently known and the results of some new research on body image. It compares the effects of gender, sexuality, social class, age and ethnicity on satisfaction with the way we look and suggests how these differences arise. Why, for instance, are heterosexual men much happier with their body images than women or gay men? Sarah Grogan discusses the effect of media presentation of the ideal body and other cultural influences. Surprisingly, despite the almost exclusive media preference for very young female bodies, she finds that older women are not less satisfied with their bodies than younger women. Written for readers from a variety of disciplines, this clear and eclectic book will make the ideal text for students from psychology, sociology, gender and media studies.
