Download or read book Pigeon in a Crosswalk written by Jack Gray and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From television producer Jack Gray comes a generational account of finding one’s way at work, at home, and even across the street. There are a lot of unforgettable characters in these pages: a loveable if possibly alcoholic dog; a set of grandparents who crush on Alex Trebek and obsess about death; Golden Girls and blue bloods, anchormen and Supreme Court justices; divas and wags—but the best character of all is the author himself. To read Jack Gray’s musings is to enter the company of a young man of titanic wit and talent. As he observes and echoes the fixations and neuroses of his generation and our times, he will make you squirm, guffaw, and ultimately marvel.

Book A Year of Biblical Womanhood

Download or read book A Year of Biblical Womanhood written by Rachel Held Evans and published by Thomas Nelson Inc. This book was released on 2012 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller. With just the right mixture of humor and insight, compassion and incredulity, A Year of Biblical Womanhood is an exercise in scriptural exploration and spiritual contemplation. What does God truly expect of women, and is there really a prescription for biblical womanhood? Come along with Evans as she looks for answers in the rich heritage of biblical heroines, models of grace, and all-around women of valor. What is "biblical womanhood" . . . really? Strong-willed and independent, Rachel Held Evans couldn't sew a button on a blouse before she embarked on a radical life experiment--a year of biblical womanhood. Intrigued by the traditionalist resurgence that led many of her friends to abandon their careers to assume traditional gender roles in the home, Evans decides to try it for herself, vowing to take all of the Bible's instructions for women as literally as possible for a year. Pursuing a different virtue each month, Evans learns the hard way that her quest for biblical womanhood requires more than a "gentle and quiet spirit" (1 Peter 3:4). It means growing out her hair, making her own clothes, covering her head, obeying her husband, rising before dawn, abstaining from gossip, remaining silent in church, and even camping out in the front yard during her period. See what happens when a thoroughly modern woman starts referring to her husband as "master" and "praises him at the city gate" with a homemade sign. Learn the insights she receives from an ongoing correspondence with an Orthodox Jewish woman, and find out what she discovers from her exchanges with a polygamist wife. Join her as she wrestles with difficult passages of scripture that portray misogyny and violence against women.

It’s a place of history, culture, and some of the most momentous events of the nation. But it’s also a gathering place for some of the city’s homeless. What is life like for the homeless in Harvard Square? Do they have anything to tell people about life? And God? That’s what Harvard student John Frame discovered and shares in Homeless at Harvard. While taking his final course at Harvard, John Frame stepped outside the walls of academia and onto the streets, pursuing a different kind of education with his homeless friends. What he found—in the way of community and how people understand themselves---may surprise you. In this unique book, each of these urban pioneers shares his own story, providing insider perspectives of life as homeless people see it. This heartwarming page-turner shows how John learned with, from, and about his homeless friends—who together tell an unforgettable story—helping readers’ better understand problems outside themselves and that they’re more similar to those on the streets than they may have believed.

Book Crosswalk

Download or read book Crosswalk written by Rodrick Purves and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 2005 Rod Purves was called by the Lord to pray for the healing of California and all of America for protection of American families. During his 15 years in the Navy our Lord had him walking through many foreign lands praying for peace and restoration. In this book you will read the trip biography of his journey as he wheeled a 12 foot cross 1100 miles along the coast of California and found revelation and understanding for the need of Christian unity in our land. His journey revealed who are we as Gods chosen people and the image of America in accordance to the faith of our forefathers and displayed in our God inspired constitution. He experienced the very image of the Church as the American people of God finding their roots in the Old and new Testament resemble the covenant between God and Israel by which God wished to save all of humanity through the passion of his only Son which is Christ Jesus but moreover to engraft individuals by the building of Christ centered loving communities. This image emphasizes the dignity of each Christian as a temple of the Holy Spirit and all of us are called into a fellowship of love and truth. The people of God are us who are baptized and acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ and is Lord and Savior. As true Americans being a Christian nation our mission is to live our lives in such a way that the Lord's light shines forth in the world through us. When we Love, Gods love can be seen. Rod's experiences remain as relevant and enduring as they did in 2005 when a man set out on an adventure that would touch the lives he met and changed his life forever.

The advice of Victor Dover and John Massengale, their historic examples and their own designs, reflect that simplicity." —From the Foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales “Street Design is a lucid, practical and altogether indispensable guide for envisioning and creating vibrant 21st century towns and cities. It should be required reading for every local political leader, planner, architect, real estate developer and engaged urban citizen in America." —Kurt Andersen, host of Studio 360 and author of True Believers "We are going to start walking around the places we live again, and as that occurs and becomes normal, we will rapidly redevelop a demand for higher quality in building at the human scale." —From the Afterword by James Howard Kunstler “Your charrette traveling library must include the important Street Design book by Victor Dover and John Massengale.”—Bill Lennertz, Executive Director, National Charrette Institute “What an amazing resource! For those who wish that my book, Walkable City, had pictures, this is the book for you. If either your work or your play includes the making of places, you will find Street Design to be an invaluable tool.” —Jeff Speck, AICP, CNU-A, LEED-AP, Hon. ASLA Written by two accomplished architects and urban designers, this user-friendly street design manual shows both how to design new streets and enhance existing ones.
