Book excerpt: On 2012, Daniel Mayhew, a brilliant weather researcher, works with Kelly Delaney, totally dedicated to protecting the environment, to build Sub-Zero, a hurricane suppression system. When Kelly's theories about a category 6 hurricane are proven true, Sub-Zero is pressed into service. Unknown to either of them, General Stefano Lowe, part of a shadowy group known as the "Lucky Thirteen," is out to stop them. As Daniel and Kelly fight to disperse the storm, Kelly's family asks her to come home. They're convinced the world is entering the "End of Times." Meanwhile, Daniel's father, ignoring the signs of a storm approaching, goes sailing. General Stefano Lowe is electrocuted trying to sabotage the system, and the Sub-Zero system successfully disperses the storm. Later, Daniel's father is found-alive! Taking him to the hospital, Kelly and Daniel realize that they have a future together-even as another storm starts to build. Book Review: What would you do to prevent death and destruction from a huge storm or hurricane? Imagine being able to create a system that could dissipate a storm and make sure it never reached hurricane force. Daniel Mayhew invented something called Sub-Zero that could do just that. He presented it to the National Hurricane Center and it was approved by most of the members. But, there is a group called the Lucky 13 that would not relish its success and will do anything to discredit him and make sure the project never gets off the ground. Daniel finds hurricanes exciting, exhilarating even though he understands their dangers. Creating the Sub-Zero, which could prevent the loss of property, lives and destruction would save billions of dollars to anywhere these hurricanes or devastating storms hit. Kelly Delaney, who also works for the Hurricane Center, understands the threat to global warming and develops her own theory and presents it. She is concerned that category 6 hurricane storms will eventually be a thing of the present and suggests that the government buy up all of the coastal land and allow it to return to nature. However, both plans are unpopular and without government support there would be little chance either would be successful. When Daniel is successful in getting the government to fund his program the group called the Lucky 13 has to find to away to discredit him and the program too. As these unscrupulous people convince Daniel's father that he stole his money for his own purposes and not for what it was intended and then falsified papers making it seem that the project was over budget, it appeared the end had finally come even before this project could be implemented. Daniel is a weather researcher with many wild ideas about stopping hurricanes before they make landfall. Kelly's predictions about category 6 storms are related to deaf ears. But, what would happen if a storm of this magnitude was brewing and no one did anything to prepare for it or believed it was going to happen? Well, you would have a group of wealthy men whose only goal is to make money off of the destruction, deaths and devastation caused by these storms. The more damage, the deaths, the more destruction the more money their construction and oil companies would make during the reconstruction process. Arnaldo Ricculli takes the reader on a dangerous ride through many storms and one impending storm that could destroy the world. A book about global warming, a topic that is relevant and important. Caring about the environment is important and Daniel and Kelly team up to stop the storm and teach the children of the state of Florida about hurricane safety in a well -crafted program they both create in order to teach children how dangerous hurricanes can be. Will Daniel ever get to implement his project? Will it work to decrease the density, volume and size of this catastrophic storm? How will this change Daniel's fathers poor perception of him and Kelly's about her. As the sixth storm called Fina

Book excerpt: The first complete moment-by-moment account of the largest Atlantic storm system ever recorded—a hurricane like no other The sky was lit by a full moon on October 29, 2012, but nobody on the eastern seaboard of the United States could see it. Everything had been consumed by cloud. The storm’s immensity caught the attention of scientists on the International Space Station. Even from there, it seemed almost limitless: 1.8 million square feet of tightly coiled bands so huge they filled the windows of the Station. It was the largest storm anyone had ever seen. Initially a tropical storm, Sandy had grown into a hybrid monster. It charged across open ocean, picking up strength with every step, baffling meteorologists and scientists, officials and emergency managers, even the traditional maritime wisdom of sailors and seamen: What exactly was this thing? By the time anyone decided, it was too late. And then the storm made landfall. Sandy was not just enormous, it was also unprecedented. As a result, the entire nation was left flat-footed. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration couldn’t issue reliable warnings; the Coast Guard didn’t know what to do. In Superstorm, journalist Kathryn Miles takes readers inside the maelstrom, detailing the stories of dedicated professionals at the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service. The characters include a forecaster who risked his job to sound the alarm in New Jersey, the crew of the ill-fated tall ship Bounty, Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Christie, and countless coastal residents whose homes—and lives—were torn apart and then left to wonder . . . When is the next superstorm coming?

Book excerpt: On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the Mid-Atlantic region. The devastation she would bring to the New York and New Jersey was widespread and unimaginable. Though warnings had been issued for days and many evacuated their homes and offices, thousands stood in the path of one of the strongest storms in the history of America. Winds on Long Island reached 90 mph. Large sections of Lower Manhattan flooded. Fire in Queens destroyed more than 100 buildings. In New Jersey, 2.6 million homes were without people and nearly 40 people were killed. A 50-foot piece of the Atlantic City Boardwalk washed away and half the city of Hoboken was under water. Hundreds of thousands were left without power and water, with dwindling food supplies. Amidst this devastation, Sandy inspired courage and hope in many New Yorkers, giving them the will to triumph against incalculable odds. Seeking shelter and the basic necessities of life, thousands continued to fight on to simply survive the harshest of conditions and help others do the same. These gripping moments of ruin and recovery are captured in "Sandy: A Story of Complete Devastation, Courage, and Recovery," which features award-winning stories and nearly 100 vivid full-color images from the "New York Post." A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book will be donated to the Mayor's Fund for New York City and Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.

Book Hurricane Katrina and the Forgotten Coast of Mississippi

Download or read book Hurricane Katrina and the Forgotten Coast of Mississippi written by Susan L. Cutter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast in August 2005 with devastating consequences. Almost all analyses of the disaster have been dedicated to the way the hurricane affected New Orleans. This volume examines the impact of Katrina on southern Mississippi. While communities along Mississippi's Gulf Coast shared the impact, their socioeconomic and demographic compositions varied widely, leading to different types and rates of recovery. This volume furthers our understanding of the pace of recovery and its geographic extent, and explores the role of inequalities in the recovery process and those antecedent conditions that could give rise to a 'recovery divide'. It will be especially appealing to researchers and advanced students of natural disasters and policy makers dealing with disaster consequences and recovery.

Book excerpt: Was Sandy a freak of nature, or the new normal? On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy reached the shores of the northeastern United States to become one of the most destructive storms in history. But was Sandy a freak event, or should we have been better prepared for it? Was it a harbinger of things to come as the climate warms? In this fascinating and accessible work of popular science, atmospheric scientist and Columbia University professor Adam Sobel addresses these questions, combining his deep knowledge of the climate with his firsthand experience of the event itself. Sobel explains the remarkable atmospheric conditions that gave birth to Sandy and determined its path. He gives us insight into the science that led to the accurate forecasts of the storm from genesis to landfall, as well as an understanding of why our meteorological vocabulary failed our leaders in warning us about this unprecedented weather system—part hurricane, part winter-type nor'easter, fully deserving of the title "Superstorm." Storm Surge brings together the melting glaciers, the warming oceans, and a broad historical perspective to explain how our changing climate and developing coastlines are making New York and other cities more vulnerable. Engaging, informative, and timely, Sobel's book provokes us to think differently about how we can better prepare for the storms in our future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'As I walked up the giant stairs, the hallway seemed to get brighter and brighter. I emerged onto the balcony. The sunlight was so blinding to my eyes that had been locked closed from insanity and pain or the weight of the Seroquel that I did not take in the whole scene at first. I looked at the sky. It was blue with small hints of grey, and the breeze was still while the clouds were large and puffy. The sky was calm and peaceful and gorgeous. My eyes squinted from brightness and slight nausea; I looked down from the second floor of the raised old house and realized the streets had morphed into rivers. I looked on with both disbelief and amazement.' As the whispers of Hurricane Katrina swirled through New Orleans, I did not even consider evacuating. The reason is simple. I did not have enough heroin to make it very far out of the city, without facing the impending doom of dope sickness. This is my story of the storm of the century. Follow me, sloshing through the storm's flood waters, searching for my next fix, with the slow realization that things will never be the same again. Eliza Player spent nearly ten years living in New Orleans, soaking up all the dirt and grime that the streets and her addiction had to offer, until Hurricane Katrina threatened that way of life forever. Since she came to her recovery, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, became a proud mother and wife, and has been writing about her past experiences in hopes to shed some light into places some feel are too dark."--P. Book excerpt: October 2012. A replica of the famous HMS Bounty, an eighteenth-century tall sailing ship, set a collision course with a storm that became the largest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic—a clash that proved to be one of the most unforgettable stories of Superstorm Sandy. The Bounty, crewed by an eclectic team of seafarers and led by highly respected captain Robin Walbridge, departed from Connecticut as Sandy raced north. Walbridge, whose decisions decided the fate of his ship and crew, attempted to outmaneuver the storm by heading southeast. As violent gusts tossed the wooden vessel, the crew fought to save their ship—and themselves. When the storm finally overtook the ship, the crew was tossed into the churning sea. The men and women of a Coast Guard station in North Carolina courageously flew into hundred-mile-per-hour winds to rescue the survivors of the Bounty. After hours of white-knuckle flying, they accomplished one of their most memorable rescues ever. Based on interviews with Bounty survivors and unfettered access to Coast Guard rescue team members, The Gathering Wind is the most complete account of this heartbreaking, thrilling, and inspirational story. Book America s Great Storm

Download or read book America s Great Storm written by Haley Barbour and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Hurricane Katrina hit Mississippi on August 29, 2005, it unleashed the costliest natural disaster in American history, and the third deadliest. Haley Barbour had been Mississippi's governor for only twenty months when he assumed responsibility for guiding his pummeled, stricken state's recovery and rebuilding efforts. America's Great Storm is not only a personal memoir of his role in that recovery, but also a sifting of the many lessons he learned about leadership in a time of massive crisis. For the book, the authors interviewed more than forty-five key people involved in helping Mississippi recover, including local, state, and federal officials as well as private citizens who played pivotal roles in the weeks and months following Katrina's landfall. In addition to covering in detail the events of September and October 2005, chapters focus on the special legislative session that allowed casinos to build on shore; the role of the recovery commission chaired by Jim Barksdale; a behind-the-scenes description of working with Congress to pass an unprecedented, multi-billion-dollar emergency disaster assistance appropriation; and the enormous roles played by volunteers in rebuilding the entire housing, transportation, and education infrastructure of South Mississippi and the Gulf Coast. A final chapter analyzes the leadership skills and strategies Barbour employed on behalf of the people of his state, observations that will be valuable to anyone tasked with managing in a crisis.
