Book excerpt: Since its inauguration in 1932, the Whitney Biennial has showcased contemporary artistic innovation, becoming a highly anticipated event in the art world. The 2010 Biennial is curated by Francesco Bonami and Gary Carrion-Murayari and features works by approximately 55 artists working in a variety of media and practices. Uniquely, this catalogue serves as both a handsome accompaniment to the 2010 exhibition and an insightful exploration of the significance of this acclaimed and often controversial event throughout its history. In addition to presenting full-color reproductions of the selected artists’ recent work, the curators have prepared a joint essay on the 2010 exhibition, and a group of writers contributed brief entries on the represented artists’ techniques, influences, and recent work. A detailed appendix features a short text on the significance of the museum’s annual and biennial exhibitions in the context of the museum’s history and broader collection, as well as photographs of previous installations, facsimiles of historical reviews, and a chronological list of artists included in past annuals and biennials. Thumbnails of all previous catalogue covers are also included, positioning each Biennial as a snapshot of artistic practice at a particular moment. Book excerpt: Presenting the latest iteration of this crucial exhibition, always a barometer of contemporary American art The 2022 Whitney Biennial is accompanied by this landmark volume. Each of the Biennial's participants is represented by a selected exhibition history, a bibliography, and imagery complemented by a personal statement or interview that foregrounds the artist's own voice. Essays by the curators and other contributors elucidate themes of the exhibition and discuss the participants. The 2022 Biennial's two curators, David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards, are known for their close collaboration with living artists. Coming after several years of seismic upheaval in and beyond the cultural, social, and political landscapes, this catalogue will offer a new take on the storied institution of the Biennial while continuing to serve--as previous editions have--as an invaluable resource on present-day trends in contemporary art in the United States.

Book A Muted Roar

Download or read book A Muted Roar written by Kaitlyn Gumpper and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As soon as 55 artists of the 2010 Whitney Museum of American Arts Biennial were announced, the media began calling 2010 "the year of the woman." For the first time in history, the Biennial would feature more female artists than male. ... While an exhibit like 2010 indicates that contemporary female artists are making strides in the world of curatorial art, even in large institutions, it does not mean that women are now equal with men, particularly when it comes to the open market ... The critical response to these shows, both overtly and subtly, expose that those who make up art history ... continue to be influenced by the patriarchal bias in the art world .. Until the time comes when museums, critics, and the market reflect the fact that women are producing valuable and important art, the feminist fight for recognition cannot be deemed a success"--Leaf 2.

Book excerpt: Last season we published Horn's Dictionary of Water, a universal lexicon, now we offer This Is Me, This Is You Horn's handbook of identity. Here in this uniquely bound twinned volume we have a book with no end. Peruse the 48 images taken with a 'point and shoot' camera, and as you arrive at the last image, you turn the book over and begin again: now with a paired complement for each of the 48 images, taken only a few seconds later. This work, a single and singular portrait photographed over a two year period evokes a multitude-- of identities, of images, of icons from Bette Davis to Marlon Brando. Ultimately it is the multitude in each of us.

  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Folds written by Tauba Auerbach and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In connection with the exhibition 'Tetrachromat' by Tauba Auerbach, Bergen Kunsthall and Sternberg Press are publishing a new book that presents Auerbach's ongoing series of "Fold" paintings for the first time in book form. In these paintings Auerbach twists and folds the canvas before applying the paint. In its stretched form the flat canvas retains a trompe l'oeilrendering of its previous three-dimensional state. Transferred to the medium of the book, the paintings are presented here in a new and unexpected way alongside mathematical diagrams and three texts. Auerbach works with a number of printed media, and the book enjoys a quite central position in her oeuvre: from highly sophisticated book sculptures that are somewhere between physical objects and non-narrative books, to a series of individually made artist books - a pop-up book where six detailed paper sculptures emerge from the book's pages.

Book excerpt: With sampling, shuffling, and montage taking centre stage, the practice of Swiss-American artist Christian Marclay (*1955) has been anchored in the universe of sound since the end of the 1970s.An eminent conceptual artist and recipient of the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for his landmark 24-hour video installation 'The Clock' (2010), he is equally fascinated by all aspects of popular music and avant-garde music, Hollywood cinema, and experimental film.Drawing on the Fluxus vision of art and Pop spirit, and heir to John Cage and Andy Warhol, Marclay has been exploring all the possibilities of the visual arts and the relationships between visual and sonic phenomena for more than four decades through collage, assemblage, installation, video, photography, painting, and printmaking. Also a performer, he has taken part in numerous musical projects, making the vinyl record and the turntable his favourite instruments. This volume explores in depth his consequential open and multimedia work, whose echo and popularity have continued to grow over time. From his early performances in the 1970s to his iconic 'Guitar Drag' (2000) and his most recent large-scale video installations such as 'All Together' (2018) and 'Subtitled' (2019), assemblages of records and their covers, photographs in all formats, altered musical instruments, videos, combined prints and paintings, objects, and graphic scores ensure the connective tissue of this choral and resolutely polymorphic body of work in perpetual evolution--a practice in which the auditory dimension of our existence, whether literal or silently evoked, is constantly asserted.Accompanies the exhibition 'Christian Marclay', 16 Nov 2022 - 27 Feb 2023, Centre Pompidou, Paris.Design by Zak Group.
