This program prepares individuals for entry-level occupations in clothing and textiles services including, but not limited to, construction; fabric, fabric design, and fabric care; pattern design; principles of clothing construction and selection; fitting and alterations of ready-to-wear garments; custom tailoring; clothing maintenance; home furnishings; and textiles testing. This program meets the National Standards for Family and Consumer Sciences - Textiles and Apparel. Appended are: (1) National Standards for Family and Consumer Science Textiles and Apparel; (2) Related Academic Standards; and (3) 21st Century Skills. Emergency Medical Technician is a one-semester instructional program that prepares individuals to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight, trained in airway management, communications, documentation, general pharmacology, hemorrhage control, ambulance operations, and splinting of adult, pediatric, and infant patients; and special care of patients exposed to heat, cold, radiation, or contagious disease. Students who complete the program are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Exam and become state certified. Industry standards are based on the "National EMS Education Standards" and the "Emergency Medical Technician Instructional Guidelines". The financial services industry includes banks, savings and loan associations, finance companies, credit unions, and the financial aspects of businesses. The Standards for Banking and Finance were developed by the Marketing Education Resource Center. The Finance Cluster Standards were specifically used in the curriculum revision. Surgical Technology is an instructional program that prepares an individual to serve as a member of the surgical team to work with surgeons, anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. This program includes the education of all aspects of surgical technology including the role of second assistant and circulator. Graduates of the 12-month program will be awarded the Certificate of Surgical Technology. The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology will be awarded to the successful graduate of the 24-month program. Qualified graduates will be required to apply to the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (formerly the LCC-ST) to become a Certified Surgical Technologist. Industry standards are based on the "Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology." Exit points are provided to allow employment as a Long-Term Care Aide after completion of the Nurse Assistant Core and Homemaker/Home Health Aide after completion of the Nurse Assistant Core and Homemaker/Home Health Aide course of study. The Veterinary Technology program is a 2-yr program offered by the Agriculture Department of Hinds Community College. This program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Graduates may become a certified veterinary technician upon passing the certification examination offered by the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Board. Employment opportunities for veterinary technicians include small and large animal practices, medical research, pharmaceutical research, wildlife rehabilitation, humane societies, zoological parks, and government agencies. Applicants must have attained level 3 math standing prior to admission to the program. Students successfully completing the program are prepared to enter various animal technology careers such as Veterinary Technician (Animal Health) in small animal practice, small animal emergency practice, mixed animal practice, large animal practice, equine practice, and food animal practice. Veterinary Technology programs may be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Graduates may become registered veterinary technicians through the Mississippi Board of Veterinary Medicine. Graduates would also be prepared for the following: (1) Taking the Technology Laboratory Animal Technician certification examination to become an assistant laboratory animal technician; (2) Taking the Laboratory Animal Technician certification examination after attaining assistant laboratory animal technician certification; and (3) Taking the Laboratory Animal Technologist certification examination after attaining laboratory animal technician certification and completing 4 years of work experience in a laboratory animal facility. After successfully completing the program, the student will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree from the community/junior college. Industry standards are based on the "American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities Skills List." Appended are: (1) Standards and Guidelines for Veterinary Education and Activities; (2) Related Academic Standards; (3) 21st Century Skills; and (4) National Educational Technology Standards for Students.
