Book A Theory of Enclaves

Download or read book A Theory of Enclaves written by Evgeny Vinokurov and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempting to provide a fully-fledged theory of enclaves and exclaves, A Theory of Enclaves covers a wide scope of regions and territories throughout the world and satisfies the need for a systematic view on enclaves. This book covers 282 enclaves, with a combined population total of approximately three million, but the importance of enclaves is much higher because of their specific status and issues raised for both the mainland states and the surrounding states: Gibraltar was disproportionately large for British-Spanish relations throughout the last three centuries, Kaliningrad managed to cause a major crisis in the EU-Russian relations in 2002-03, Tiny Ceuta and Melilla have caused tensions in Spanish-Moroccan relations for more than three centuries and have recently become visible as conflict points at the EU level, German Buesingen was subject to several complex international treaties between Germany and Switzerland. Rather than viewing each enclave as a unique case, or even as an anomaly, A Theory of Enclaves provides a systematic investigation of enclave-related political and economic issues. Rich on maps and illustrations, A Theory of Enclaves strives to comprise three facets of enclaves' existence: political, economic, and social life.

Book excerpt: The wreck site was discovered during the course of a survey of Klondike Gold Rush era wrecks resting at the bottom of the lake in July 2008. Underwater archaeologists examined the ship in 2009 and found many objects preserved as they were when the ship went down. Among the artifacts was a phonograph with three records, including Rendezvous Waltz and a 1896 recording of Ma Onliest One. Book Writing Directing and Producing Documentary Films and Videos Fourth Edition

Download or read book Writing Directing and Producing Documentary Films and Videos Fourth Edition written by Alan Rosenthal and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2007-06-26 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Alan Rosenthal states in the preface to this new edition of his acclaimed resource for filmmakers, Writing, Directing, and Producing Documentary Films and Videos is “a book about storytelling—how to tell great and moving stories about fascinating people, whether they be villains or heroes.” In response to technological advances and the growth of the documentary hybrid in the past five years, Rosenthal reconsiders how one approaches documentary filmmaking in the twenty-first century. Simply and clearly, he explains how to tackle day-to-day problems, from initial concept through distribution. He demonstrates his ideas throughout the book with examples from key filmmakers’ work. New aspects of this fourth edition include a vital new chapter titled "Making Your First Film," and a considerable enlargement of the section for producers, "Staying Alive," which includes an extensive discussion of financing, marketing, festivals, and distribution. This new edition offers a revised chapter on nonlinear editing, more examples of precise and exacting proposals, and the addition of a complex budget example with explanation of the budgeting process. Discussion of documentary hybrids, with suggestions for mastering changes and challenges, has also been expanded, while the “Family Films” chapter includes updated information that addresses rapid expansion in this genre.

Book Gold at Fortymile Creek

Download or read book Gold at Fortymile Creek written by Michael Gates and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book, based on the accounts of dozens of prospectors, follows the first gold-seekers from their arrival in 1873 until the stampede to the Klondike in 1896. Gates captures the essence of these early years of the gold rush, about which very little has been written. He chronicles the trials, hearbreaks, and successes of the unique and hardy individualists who searched for gold in the wilderness. With names like Swiftwater Bill, Crooked Leg Louie, Slobbery Tom, and Tin Kettle George, these men lived in total isolation beyond the borders of civilization. They were often eccentrics and outcasts, who shaped their own rules, their own justice, and their own social order.

Download or read book Our American Cousin written by Tom Taylor and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-06-25 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our American Cousin is a three-act play written by English playwright Tom Taylor. The play opened in London in 1858 but quickly made its way to the U.S. and premiered at Laura Keene’s Theatre in New York City later that year. It remained popular in the U.S. and England for the next several decades. Its most notable claim to fame, however, is that it was the play U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was watching on April 14, 1865 when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, who used his knowledge of the script to shoot Lincoln during a more raucous scene. The play is a classic Victorian farce with a whole range of stereotyped characters, business, and many entrances and exits. The plot features a boorish but honest American cousin who travels to the aristocratic English countryside to claim his inheritance, and then quickly becomes swept up in the family’s affairs. An inevitable rescue of the family’s fortunes and of the various damsels in distress ensues. Our American Cousin was originally written as a farce for an English audience, with the laughs coming mostly at the expense of the naive American character. But after it moved to the U.S. it was eventually recast as a comedy where English caricatures like the pompous Lord Dundreary soon became the primary source of hilarity. This early version, published in 1869, contains fewer of that character’s nonsensical adages, which soon came to be known as “Dundrearyisms,” and for which the play eventually gained much of its popular appeal.

Book Skagway City of the New Century

Download or read book Skagway City of the New Century written by William Jeffery Brady and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shgagwi, as it was first called centuries ago by the Tlingit for the "bunched up water" in its bay caused by strong winds, was discovered in 1887 by a father and son with visions of a gateway port to the riches of the Yukon and Alaska. Ten years later, after the discovery of gold in the Klondike, their vision came true with the arrival of prospectors from all over the world. Skaguay and nearby Dyea were rival towns, booming from the rush for gold. Each had multiple newspapers which chronicled the stampede and the competition between the White and Chilkoot passes, but Skagway won the war with the construction of the White Pass & Yukon Route railway and settled on a way to spell its name. The community has survived smaller booms and busts since, but remains a vital tourism and industrial port as the Gateway to the Klondike. In 1898 editors called Skagway the "City of the New Century". In this book of stories and photographs, the rich history of this area and its people is chronicled through that new century, and into the next.
