Book Does Landscape Composition Affect Wetland Occupancy by Blanding s Turtles Emydoidea Blandingii in the National Capital Region

Download or read book Does Landscape Composition Affect Wetland Occupancy by Blanding s Turtles Emydoidea Blandingii in the National Capital Region written by Vincent Fyson and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within a landscape, a species' occurrence is dictated by the availability of suitable habitat and resources needed for survival; however, occurrence is not only affected by the characteristics of occupied sites, but also by the characteristics of the surrounding landscape. The endangered Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii), a semi-aquatic freshwater turtle, occupies a wide range of wetlands and landscapes in southeastern Canada and the northeastern United States. While the effects of habitat characteristics on wetland occupancy by Blanding's turtles have been documented, here I explore whether the probability of wetland occupancy by Blanding's turtles is affected by the surrounding landscape. I used visual surveys, environmental DNA, and atlas data to document the presence of Blanding's turtles. I then used boosted regression tree modelling to determine how landscape composition explains wetland occupancy. Forest cover around the surveyed wetlands was the strongest positive driver of turtle occupancy while anthropogenic land cover was the strongest negative driver of turtle occupancy. Generally, human disturbances in a landscape lowered the probability of occupancy. Overall, I determined that wetland occupancy by Blanding's turtles is affected by landscape composition and that, therefore, wetland occupancy can successfully be predicted from the composition of the surrounding landscape.

Book An Assessment of Viable Habitat for Blanding s Turtle Emydodidea Blandingii in the State of Ohio Using GIS and Remote Sensing

Download or read book An Assessment of Viable Habitat for Blanding s Turtle Emydodidea Blandingii in the State of Ohio Using GIS and Remote Sensing written by Bradley M. Poynter and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) has received threatened status in the State of Ohio in 2010. The goal of this study is to provide information that can be used in conservation management to locate suitable habitat for conservation of the species as well as potential repatriation or trans location sites. Wetland Inventory and Land Use/Land Cover maps were combined with aerial photography to evaluate regions located in Ohio's Lake Erie Drainage Basin that would meet the essential requirements of the turtles life history by quantitative methods used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing programs. This study identified suitable wetlands and vernal pools, lakes and ponds, and other areas with minimum canopy for nesting and movement. Throughout the region, the highest concentration of available habitat is found in Erie, Lucas, and Ottawa counties of the Blanding's turtle's historical range. This approach to creating Habitat Niche Models was validated by close correlation between the counties identified as having remaining appropriate habitat and the counties from the historical populations in which Blanding's turtles still remain. The potential exists to restore these areas through various means: restoring wetlands, protecting areas near agriculture that are more suitable for nesting, constructing small tunnels under roads and fences, and installing road warning signs to allow for safer migration. With protection and restoration of the habitat, the species may still have a chance to recover and become a stable population without the need for intense management.

This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an estimated population of 350 adults, the population of Blanding's turtles in Nova Scotia is listed as Endangered both federally and provincially. Headstarting is used in Nova Scotia as part of the recovery program and is designed to improve the survivorship of turtles at an early life history stage. In 2009 and 2010, the largest Blanding's turtle headstarting effort to date in Nova Scotia was undertaken with eggs collected from Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site (KNP). These eggs were incubated and hatched at Oaklawn Zoo, Aylesford, Nova Scotia, and the hatchlings were subsequently raised in captivity for two years. A total of 154 headstarted turtles were re-introduced into KNP during the summers of 2011 and 2012. A total of 29 headstarted turtles released at Atkins Brook were tracked using radio telemetry to study growth and movement. For comparative purposes, 7 wild incubated turtles were also collected and tagged for radio tracking. Turtles were tracked weekly from April to November 2012 to collect movement data and were measured the first week of every month. For the purpose of analysis, turtles were divided into 4 groups: 2009-headstarts, 2010-headstarts, wild (3yrs), and wild (5-7). A pairwise comparison found a difference in movement rates between groups. Wild (5-7) turtles were found to have higher movement rates than all other groups (P

Book Fencing for Conservation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conflict between increasing human population and biodiversity conservation is one of the IUCN’s key threatening processes. Conservation planning has received a great deal of coverage and research as a way of conserving biodiversity yet, while theoretically successful, it has never been tested. Simple lines on maps to illustrate conservation areas are unlikely to be successful in the light of human encroachment. It may be that some form of overt display is necessary to ensure the protection of reserves. This may be signage, presence of guards/rangers or physical fencing structures. The need for some form of barrier goes beyond restricting human access. The megafauna of Africa pose a genuine threat to human survival. In southern Africa, fences keep animals in and protect the abutting human population. Elsewhere, fencing is not considered important or viable. Where poverty is rife, it won’t take much to tip the balance from beneficial conservation areas to troublesome repositories of crop-raiders, diseases and killers. Conversely, in New Zealand fences are used to keep animals out. Introduced species have decimated New Zealand’s endemic birds, reptiles and invertebrates, and several sites have been entirely encapsulated in mouse-proof fencing to ensure their protection. Australia faces the same problems as New Zealand, however surrounds its national parks with cattle fences. Foxes and cats are free to enter and leave at will, resulting in rapid recolonisation following poisoning campaigns. How long will these poison campaigns work before tolerance, aversion or resistance evolves in the introduced predator populations?

Book Public Participation in Environmental Assessment and Decision Making

Download or read book Public Participation in Environmental Assessment and Decision Making written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-11-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal agencies have taken steps to include the public in a wide range of environmental decisions. Although some form of public participation is often required by law, agencies usually have broad discretion about the extent of that involvement. Approaches vary widely, from holding public information-gathering meetings to forming advisory groups to actively including citizens in making and implementing decisions. Proponents of public participation argue that those who must live with the outcome of an environmental decision should have some influence on it. Critics maintain that public participation slows decision making and can lower its quality by including people unfamiliar with the science involved. This book concludes that, when done correctly, public participation improves the quality of federal agencies' decisions about the environment. Well-managed public involvement also increases the legitimacy of decisions in the eyes of those affected by them, which makes it more likely that the decisions will be implemented effectively. This book recommends that agencies recognize public participation as valuable to their objectives, not just as a formality required by the law. It details principles and approaches agencies can use to successfully involve the public.
