Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of French Broad Baptist Association, 1807-1994: And Histories of the Fifty-Eight Churches Fugitives from the Yadkin founded the first Baptist church in eastern Tennessee and began a movement which was to penetrate the mountains of Western North Carolina. On November 6, l 780, Baptists who settled in the Carolina mountains organized the French Broad Baptist Church in what is now Henderson County, the first church of any faith to be organized west of the Blue Ridge in North Carolina. By the next year Baptists in Ten nessee and Carolina had established five or six churches and organized a temporary association through which they retained membership in the Sandy Creek Association. In 1 786, however, the new churches gave up the distant parent and formed the Holston Association. During the next two decades other churches were organized in the area. By 1800 thirty-six congregations with from two to three thousand members had been estab lished. For geographic reasons some of the Caro lina churches became members of the Broad River Association in South Carolina. He was appointed as a State Missionary in Bland County, Va. In 1902. He served as pastor of the Clear Fork Baptist Church besides the other duties on the field. Three churches were organized under his leadership while serving there. After seven years he resigned and returned to his native state. He went to serve the Fairview Baptist Church in Buncombe Association where he served eight years as pastor. During that time a new edifice was built. Then he went to serve the Barnardsville Baptist Church in Barnardsville. He served other smaller churches part time during this time. Forks of Ivey was one of these churches in Madison County. This was where he preached his first sermon when he started preaching in 1899. Later he came back to the Fairview Baptist Church where he served five more years. Reverend Phillips became the pastor of the 'east Flat Rock Baptist Church in the Carolina Association in 1925. He served this church until retiring in 1963. It had a membership of 219. Missions gifts (home foreign) was only In 1962 the membership had grown to 453 and the offering to missions had grown to During his pastorate, a new building was completed. Before-his retirement, he led the church in building a new pastorium for the pastor and family who would be his successor.
