Book Geological Disposal of Carbon Dioxide and Radioactive Waste A Comparative Assessment

Download or read book Geological Disposal of Carbon Dioxide and Radioactive Waste A Comparative Assessment written by Ferenc L. Toth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-21 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossil fuels will remain the backbone of the global energy economy for the foreseeable future. The contribution of nuclear energy to the global energy supply is also expected to increase. With the pressing need to mitigate climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the fossil energy industry is exploring the possibility of carbon dioxide disposal in geological media. Geological disposal has been studied for decades by the nuclear industry with a view to ensuring the safe containment of its wastes. Geological disposal of carbon dioxide and that of radioactive waste gives rise to many common concerns in domains ranging from geology to public acceptance. In this respect, comparative assessments reveal many similarities, ranging from the transformation of the geological environment and safety and monitoring concerns to regulatory, liability and public acceptance issues. However, there are profound differences on a broad range of issues as well, such as the quantities and hazardous features of the materials to be disposed of, the characteristics of the targeted geological media, the site engineering technologies involved and the timescales required for safe containment at the disposal location. There are ample opportunities to learn from comparisons and to derive insights that will assist policymakers responsible for national energy strategies and international climate policies.

Book Nuclear Debates in Asia

Download or read book Nuclear Debates in Asia written by Mike Mochizuki and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-07-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book analyzes nuclear weapon and energy policies in Asia, a region at risk for high-stakes military competition, conflict, and terrorism. The contributors explore the trajectory of debates over nuclear energy, security, and nonproliferation in key countries—China, India, Japan, Pakistan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, and other states in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Arguing against conventional wisdom, the contributors make a convincing case that domestic variables are far more powerful than external factors in shaping nuclear decision making. The book explores what drives debates and how decisions are framed, the interplay between domestic dynamics and geopolitical calculations in the discourse, where the center of gravity of debates lies in each country, and what this means for regional cooperation or competition and U.S. nuclear energy and nonproliferation policy in Asia.

Book China s New Governing Party Paradigm

Download or read book China s New Governing Party Paradigm written by Mr Timothy R. Heath and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-12-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time since its founding in 1921, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has adopted a new paradigm for its role in China. Abandoning its former identity as a 'revolutionary party', the CCP now regards itself as a 'governing party' committed to meeting the diverse needs of its people and realizing China’s revitalization as a great power. To enhance its ability to realize these aims, the CCP has enacted extensive political and ideological reforms. Central to that effort are changes to how the party develops and oversees strategy and policy. Few studies are available on the CCP's adoption of this new identity and of its political implications. This book remedies that oversight by explaining the historic context, drivers, and meaning of the governing party paradigm. It explains how adoption of this paradigm is transforming the processes through which the CCP develops strategy and policy. Furthermore, it differs from many other books in that it is the first to derive its analysis primarily from the study of authoritative Chinese sources. The book also provides an extensive array of helpful references, including chronologies, lists of major strategy documents, a glossary, and more. Accurately understanding the CCP's new role as a governing party requires a firm grasp of how China’s leadership formulates, documents, and implements strategies and policies to improve its governance and further the nation’s rejuvenation. This book provides such valuable information in one handy volume.

Book China s Medium and Long Term Science and Technology Program

Download or read book China s Medium and Long Term Science and Technology Program written by Zhenghong Chen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-28 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book conducts a panoramic study on the history of China’s Science and Technology which focuses on the Medium and Long-Term Science and Technology Program (MLSTP). In general these Programs have a duration of 5-30 year. This book provides an epochal assessment of the project’s conceptual context over the past 60 years.. The author shows that the historical evolution and conceptual development of China’s MLSTP are the result of an amalgamation of political, economic and social factors within distinct contemporary contexts. As a national action plan, MLSTP has incorporated many of the factors that go beyond the intentional factors of science and technology. MLSTP is not only a macro vision and blueprint for scientific and technological development; it is also a political act of realizing the national will. While ensuring the MLSTP builds on its great achievements, the author also reflects upon its deficiencies and disadvantages in order to better promote the advancement of science and technology in China. This book comprehensively lays out the historical and theoretical dimensions. Based on a clear vision of historical constructivism the author has compiled the MLSTP philosophy of different eras into a conceptual framework for this era and used this framework to research and analyze the historical and conceptual evolution of MLSTP. Research on MLSTP is important for as enrichment of contemporary studies in the history of science and the science and technology policy. In 2010, more than 60 years after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the country had enacted 10 MLSTP programs. This book separates the development of the MLSTP into three different historical eras: the era of economic planning, the era of economic transformation and the new century. Each historical epoch corresponds to a different MLSTP philosophy concept, which enables us to study the conceptual evolution of MLSTP using historical research as our foundation.

Book Annual Review of Low Carbon Development in China 2010

Download or read book Annual Review of Low Carbon Development in China 2010 written by Ye Qi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the midst of global economic development, the world is rapidly running out of resources. It is imperative that the level of carbon emissions be addressed by countries globally. This is especially so in China, where industrialization, city development and progressive agriculture have developed substantially. This comprehensive and integrated annual review volume sets the precedent in addressing this issue by being the pioneering volume on China's low-carbon development efforts, based on research efforts conducted by the Climate Policy Initiative at Tsinghua — an independent, experienced and professional research group. Several key questions on the results of China's 11th Five-Year plan are explored by reviewing China's performance against targets, while key policies and institutions that were designed and implemented are described. With a focus on the effectiveness of low-carbon development policies in China during the period of 2005–2008 and a look at detailed key indicators of low-carbon development such as energy consumption, CO2 emission and low-carbon technologies, the Annual Review of Low-carbon Development in China offers some insights and questions to consider as China works to meet the future through 2020.
