Book Marital Status and Hiv Risk in Kenya

Download or read book Marital Status and Hiv Risk in Kenya written by Tomi Akinyemiju and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sub-Saharan Africa, women are at a higher risk of contracting HIV than men according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). Unfortunately, there is very little research focused on the sub-population of married women in order to highlight how different risk factors affect them specifically and may place them at increased risk for HIV infection. This is especially important in the context of low condom use, childbearing and the trust inherent within marriage. A comprehensive literature review of peer reviewed articles from 1990-2005 was conducted and revealed that there is little known about the effect of marital status on HIV risk. The major factors in the transmission of HIV within marriage are low condom use, low educational attainment, migration as well as extramarital affairs. In order to further understand this population, data from the 2003 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (2003 KDHS) was analyzed for this 2006 master's thesis project in Epidemiology.

Book Evidence Ethos and Experiment

Download or read book Evidence Ethos and Experiment written by P. Wenzel Geissler and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical research has been central to biomedicine in Africa for over a century, and Africa, along with other tropical areas, has been crucial to the development of medical science. At present, study populations in Africa participate in an increasing number of medical research projects and clinical trials, run by both public institutions and private companies. Global debates about the politics and ethics of this research are growing and local concerns are prompting calls for social studies of the “trial communities” produced by this scientific work. Drawing on rich, ethnographic and historiographic material, this volume represents the emergent field of anthropological inquiry that links Africanist ethnography to recent concerns with science, the state, and the culture of late capitalism in Africa.

Book A Socio Criminological Analysis of the HIV Epidemic

Download or read book A Socio Criminological Analysis of the HIV Epidemic written by Bruno Meini and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of the 21st century, epidemics are common biological and social occurrences, with HIV perhaps emphasising this better than any other disease. Medical scientific research has undoubtedly made significant steps forward; meanwhile, the social research field is still in its initial stages, with many awaiting an equally auspicious response. A Socio-Criminological Analysis of the HIV Epidemic offers a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted socio-criminological dimensions of the HIV epidemic and positively contributes to the ongoing sociological debate on infectious diseases. The author intends to create an independent epistemology of HIV to explicate the social forces that impact and determine the course and experience of the epidemic, while also seeking to reframe the popular discourse on HIV to reflect sociological conceptualisations. This latter step leads to the identification of the concept of social interaction as an appropriate tool for highlighting the complex social nature of this virus. The unprecedented challenge posed by the epidemic for the international community calls for global cooperation aimed at evaluating the diverse aspects of the issues that many actors in this tragic drama must deal with. Given its wide-reaching international appeal, this book is also recommended for those involved or interested in global health issues and infectious diseases. It will be of particular interest to medical researchers, health workers, social scientists, social workers, policymakers, humanitarian workers, HIV and human rights activists, and graduate students.

Book Women s Voices from the Margins

Download or read book Women s Voices from the Margins written by Elizabeth Swart and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s Voices from the Margins explores the coping strategies, agency, and resilience of women living in Kibera, Kenya—one of Africa’s largest slums. Based on a multi-year research project in which the author analyzed the diaries of 20 young women from Kibera, this thought-provoking book describes the women’s lives, the realities of gender-based violence, and their responses and coping strategies. Drawing on both qualitative journal accounts and quantitative surveys, Elizabeth Swart reveals the agency and strength of these women, who create opportunities for themselves and their children despite the violence and extreme poverty that are a daily actuality of life in Kibera. Taking a global feminist perspective, the author considers the women’s lives in the larger context of urbanization, globalization, and neo-liberal social policies. By presenting the voices of the young women alongside rich scholarly analysis, this engaging text will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of gender and women’s studies, sociology, international social work, and global studies.
