Book Investigations of the Syntax Semantics Pragmatics Interface

Download or read book Investigations of the Syntax Semantics Pragmatics Interface written by Robert D. Van Valin, Jr. and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations of the Syntax-Semantics-Pragmatics Interface presents on-going research in Role and Reference Grammar in a number of critical areas of linguistic theory: verb semantics and argument structure, the nature of syntactic categories and syntactic representation, prosody and syntax, information structure and syntax, and the syntax and semantics of complex sentences. In each of these areas there are important results which not only advance the development of the theory, but also contribute to the broader theoretical discussion. In particular, there are analyses of grammatical phenomena such as transitivity in Kabardian, the verb-less numeral quantifier construction in Japanese, and an unusual kind of complex sentence in Wari’ (Chapakuran, Brazil) which not only illustrate the descriptive and explanatory power of the theory, but also present interesting challenges to other approaches. In addition, there are papers looking at the implications and applications of Role and Reference Grammar for neurolinguistic research, parsing and automated text analysis.

Book Soft Computing for Image and Multimedia Data Processing

Download or read book Soft Computing for Image and Multimedia Data Processing written by Siddhartha Bhattacharyya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proper analysis of image and multimedia data requires efficient extraction and segmentation techniques. Among the many computational intelligence approaches, the soft computing paradigm is best equipped with several tools and techniques that incorporate intelligent concepts and principles. This book is dedicated to object extraction, image segmentation, and edge detection using soft computing techniques with extensive real-life application to image and multimedia data. The authors start with a comprehensive tutorial on the basics of brain structure and learning, and then the key soft computing techniques, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, and rough sets. They then present seven chapters that detail the application of representative techniques to complex image processing tasks such as image recognition, lighting control, target tracking, object extraction, and edge detection. These chapters follow a structured approach with detailed explanations of the problems, solutions, results, and conclusions. This is both a standalone textbook for graduates in computer science, electrical engineering, system science, and information technology, and a reference for researchers and engineers engaged with pattern recognition, image processing, and soft computing.

  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book Fuzzy Cognitive Maps written by Michael Glykas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-07 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important edited volume is the first such book ever published on fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs). Professor Michael Glykas has done an exceptional job in bringing together and editing its seventeen chapters. The volume appears nearly a quarter century after my original article “Fuzzy Cognitive Maps” appeared in the International Journal of Man-Machine Studies in 1986. The volume accordingly reflects many years of research effort in the development of FCM theory and applications—and portends many more decades of FCM research and applications to come. FCMs are fuzzy feedback models of causality. They combine aspects of fuzzy logic, neural networks, semantic networks, expert systems, and nonlinear dynamical systems. That rich structure endows FCMs with their own complexity and lets them apply to a wide range of problems in engineering and in the soft and hard sciences. Their partial edge connections allow a user to directly represent causality as a matter of degree and to learn new edge strengths from training data. Their directed graph structure allows forward or what-if inferencing. FCM cycles or feedback paths allow for complex nonlinear dynamics. Control of FCM nonlinear dynamics can in many cases let the user encode and decode concept patterns as fixed-point attractors or limit cycles or perhaps as more exotic dynamical equilibria. These global equilibrium patterns are often “hidden” in the nonlinear dynamics. The user will not likely see these global patterns by simply inspecting the local causal edges or nodes of large FCMs.

Book Recent Advances in Face Recognition

Download or read book Recent Advances in Face Recognition written by Kresimir Delac and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main idea and the driver of further research in the area of face recognition are security applications and human-computer interaction. Face recognition represents an intuitive and non-intrusive method of recognizing people and this is why it became one of three identification methods used in e-passports and a biometric of choice for many other security applications. This goal of this book is to provide the reader with the most up to date research performed in automatic face recognition. The chapters presented use innovative approaches to deal with a wide variety of unsolved issues.

Book Model Driven Architecture Foundations and Applications

Download or read book Model Driven Architecture Foundations and Applications written by Ina Schieferdecker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-06-06 with total page 457 pages. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of the European Conference on Model-Driven Architecture – Foundations and Applications (ECMDA-FA 2008) was dedicated to furthering the state of knowledge and fostering the industrialization of the model-driven architecture (MDA) methodology. MDA is an initiative proposed by the - ject Management Group (OMG) for platform-generic software development. It promotes the use of models in the speci?cation, design, analysis, synthesis, - ployment, and evolution of complex software systems. ECMDA-FA 2008 focused on engaging key European and international - searchers and practitioners in a dialogue which will result in a stronger, more e?cientindustry,producingmorereliablesoftwareonthebasisofstate-of-the-art research results. ECMDA-FA is a forum for exchanging information, discussing the latest results and arguing about future developments of MDA. It is a pleasure to be able to introduce the proceedings of ECMDA-FA 2008. ECMDA-FA addresses various MDA areas including model management, e- cutable models, concrete syntaxes, aspects and concerns, validation and te- ing, model-based systems engineering, model-driven development and servi- oriented architectures, and the application of model-driven development.
