Book Register based Statistics

Download or read book Register based Statistics written by Anders Wallgren and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-05-21 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing interest in developing register-based surveys; that is surveys based upon already available administrative data. Since huge amounts of such data are generated within various administrative systems, the opportunity exists to use the data for statistical analysis without any of the costs involved in data collection. Register-based surveys require their own methodology and the development of these methods is an important challenge to statistical science. Instead of methods on how to collect data, methods for integrating data from different sources are necessary. How should administrative data be transformed to meet the statistical needs? Register-based Statistics offers readers a detailed account of the principles and practices of this increasingly popular area of statistics. Provides a comprehensive overview of register-based statistics, both in terms of theory and advanced application. Uses real life examples taken from Statistics Sweden to illustrate fundamental global principles. Proposes a much-needed systematic terminology for the field. Describes how to create statistical registers and a methodology for integration of data from many sources as a key tool for the future. Develops estimation methods and quality concepts for register-based surveys. Discusses statistical systems consisting of many statistical registers and surveys, highlighting the importance of consistency and coherence. Register-based Statistics provides a unique guide for all those working in statistical agencies. It will also prove invaluable for academic researchers and teachers in statistics, and statisticians working with administrative systems in government institutions and enterprises.

  • Pages : 507 pages

Book excerpt: Eastern Turkestan, now known as Xinjiang or the New Territory, makes up a sixth of China's land mass. Absorbed by the Qing in the 1880s and reconquered by Mao in 1949, this Turkic-Muslim region of China's remote northwest borders on formerly Soviet Central Asia, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Mongolia, and Tibet, Will Xinjiang participate in twenty-first century ascendancy, or will nascent Islamic radicalism in Xinjiang expand the orbit of instability in a dangerous part of the world? This comprehensive survey of contemporary Xinjiang is the result of a major collaborative research project begun in 1998. The authors have combined their fieldwork experience, linguistic skills, and disciplinary expertise to assemble the first multifaceted introduction to Xinjiang. The volume surveys the region's geography; its history of military and political subjugation to China; economic, social, and commercial conditions; demography, public health, and ecology; and patterns of adaption, resistance, opposition, and evolving identities.

Book The Asian Tsunami and Post Disaster Aid

Download or read book The Asian Tsunami and Post Disaster Aid written by Sunita Reddy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the lens of the Asian tsunami, this book problematizes concepts that are normally taken for granted in disaster discourse, including relief, recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation. The unprecedented flow of humanitarian aid after the Asian tsunami, though well-intentioned, showed adverse effects and unintended consequences in the lives of people in the communities across nations. Aid led not only to widespread relief and recovery but also to an exacerbation of old forms of inequities and the creation of new ones arising from the prioritization, distribution and management of aid. This, in turn, led to the incongruity between the needs and expectations of the affected and the agendas of aid agencies and their various intermediaries. This book examines the long-term consequences of post-disaster aid by posing the following questions: What has the aid been expended on? Where has the aid primarily been expended, and how? And what were the unintended consequences of post-disaster aid for the communities? This topical volume is of interest to social scientists, human rights and law researchers and environmental scientists interested in disaster studies.

Book Canadian Bilingual Districts

Download or read book Canadian Bilingual Districts written by Daniel Bourgeois and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1969 the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism recommended bilingual districts as part of its federal language policy. Daniel Bourgeois traces the complex path that led to the 1976 demise, following pressure from the Treasury Board Secretariat, of the plan to create bilingual districts. Bourgeois argues for the reconsideration of this previously discarded "corner-stone" of federal language policy, providing a nuanced analysis of social identity, sociolinguistic policies, nationalism, and minority rights and services. Canadian Bilingual Districts also considers the Royal Commission's approach in the context of contemporary developments"--Résumé de l'éditeur

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s governments in Canada and Australia have introduced policies designed to recruit Indigenous people into public services. Today, there are thousands of Indigenous public servants in these countries, and hundreds in senior roles. Their presence raises numerous questions: How do Indigenous people experience public-sector employment? What perspectives do they bring to it? And how does Indigenous leadership enhance public policy making? A comparative study of Indigenous public servants in British Columbia and Queensland, Leading from Between addresses critical concerns about leadership, difference, and public service. Centring the voices, personal experiences, and understandings of Indigenous public servants, this book uses their stories and testimony to explore how Indigenous participation and leadership change the way policies are made. Articulating a new understanding of leadership and what it could mean in contemporary public service, Catherine Althaus and Ciaran O'Faircheallaigh challenge the public service sector to work towards a more personalized and responsive bureaucracy. At a time when Canada and Australia seek to advance reconciliation and self-determination agendas, Leading from Between shows how public servants who straddle the worlds of Western bureaucracy and Indigenous communities are key to helping governments meet the opportunities and challenges of growing diversity.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any errors and the opinions contained in the paper are those of the authors, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the CCPA. [...] Overall, the availability and generosity of social supports and entitlements has eroded as the government weakens or eliminates key public services and increasingly emphasizes the necessity of individual self-reliance and participation in a de/re-regulated labour market as the only legitimate route to economic security. [...] In so doing, we consider not only policy changes that directly affect employment regulations and the availability of particular kinds of employment for women (such as the loss of public-sector jobs and changes to the provincial Employment Standards Act), but also changes that alter the conditions under which women access employment (such as changes in post-secondary education and childcare policie [...] Higher levels of education are also associated with both higher levels of employment, and a smaller gap in men and women's labour force participation rates, as documented in Table 3. Women in BC with fewer than eight years of education have only 57 per cent of the employment level of men with the same education, while those with an undergraduate degree are employed at 93 per cent of the level of t [...] As a result, the of hospital and long-term care beds, and funding cuts have eliminated number of low income housekeeping services from the home care services received by the children in the regulated disabled and frail elderly in some areas of the province.

Book Transforming conflict through social and economic development

Download or read book Transforming conflict through social and economic development written by Sandra Buchanan and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transforming conflict through social and economic development examines lessons learned from the Northern Ireland and Border Counties conflict transformation process through social and economic development and their consequent impacts and implications for practice and policymaking, with a range of functional recommendations produced for other regions emerging from and seeking to transform violent conflict. It provides, for the first time, a comprehensive assessment of the region’s transformation activity, largely amongst grassroots actors, enabled by a number of specific funding programmes, namely the International Fund for Ireland, Peace I, II and III and INTERREG I, II and IIIA. These programmes have been responsible for a huge increase in grassroots practice which to date has attracted virtually no academic analysis; this book seeks to fill this gap. In focusing on the politics of the socioeconomic activities that underpinned the elite negotiations of the peace process, key theoretical transformation concepts are firstly explored, followed by an examination of the social and economic context of Northern Ireland and the border counties. The three programmes and their impacts are then assessed before considering what policy lessons can be learned and what recommendations can be made for practice. This is underpinned by a range of semi-structured interviews and the author’s own experience as a project promoter through these programmes in the border counties for more than a decade. The book will be essential reading for students, practitioners and policymakers in the fields of peace and conflict studies, conflict transformation, peacebuilding, post-agreement reconstruction and the political economy of conflict and those interested in contemporary developments in the Northern Ireland peace process.

Book Accounting for Ethnic and Racial Diversity

Download or read book Accounting for Ethnic and Racial Diversity written by Patrick Simon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the 20th century, the ethnic question had resurfaced in public debate. Every country had been affected by what is commonly known as cultural pluralism, as a result of conflicts interpreted from an ethnic perspective, for instance, in the Balkans and central Africa; nationalist struggles, such as the Basque country, Quebec and Belgium; and demands for recognition and political representation by new ethnic minorities. This resurgence or extension of the salience of ethnicity in most of the societies around the world can now be found not only in public discourse, policy making, scientific literature and popular representation, but also in the pivotal realm of statistics. This volume explores the ethnic and racial classification in official statistics as a reflection of the representations of population, and as an interpretation of social dynamics through a different lens. Spanning all continents, a wide range of international authors discuss how ethnic and racial classifications are built, their (lack of) accuracy and their contribution to the representation of ethnic and racial diversity of multicultural societies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.
