Book Italians in Wales and their Cultural Representations 1920s 2010s

Download or read book Italians in Wales and their Cultural Representations 1920s 2010s written by Bruna Chezzi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian immigrants began to settle in Wales at the turn of the 19th century, opening hundreds of coffee shops, particularly in the South Wales Valleys. Despite this, such immigrants remain a largely unexplored case study in the history of Italian immigration to the UK. This book uses a variety of unexplored sources, and engages with the broader academic debate on migration, identity, and the trans-generational transmission of memory, to describe the emergence of Welsh-Italian narratives and the formation of a distinctive, yet complex, Welsh-Italian identity. It follows a chronological journey, moving from the interwar period, a time in which Italians in Wales were generally regarded as fully established and integrated, through to the Second World War, a time when Italian identity became problematic and resulted in nearly seventy years of ‘silencing’, up until the first decade of the 21st century, where a mixture of commemorative events and cultural initiatives prompted the emergence of Welsh-Italian narratives. The book begins by studying photographic representations of Italians in Wales during the interwar period, using photographs available in local history books, private collections and history books. The analysis of the photographic material draws from the work of scholars such as Sontag, Noble, Hirsh and Bate on photo-textual analysis, to show how photographs can reveal understudied, yet important, aspects of Italian migrant identity and of the relationship with the host community in the period that preceded the Second World War. The book then examines how the events of the Second World War destabilised the images of family, sociability and integration suggested by these photographs, and how such events aggravated tensions between host and migrant cultures. It continues by investigating recent Welsh-Italian texts where, in revisiting the past and the experience of their ancestors, the authors bring different circumstances and personal factors into play determining the degree to which they reconcile their dual identity. It concludes with a comparison between these ‘narratives of belonging’ and the representation of the Italian migrant experience in Anglo-Welsh literature.

Book Neuroscience in Intercultural Contexts

Download or read book Neuroscience in Intercultural Contexts written by Jason E. Warnick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This breakthrough volume brings together cultural neuroscience and intercultural relations in an expansive presentation. Its selected topics in reasoning, memory, and other key cognitive areas bridge the neuroscience behind culture-related phenomena with the complex social processes involved in seeing the world through the perspective of others. Coverage ranges beyond the familiar paradigms of acculturation and cultural differences to propose new ideas of potential benefit to the new generation of immigrants, negotiators, executives, and other travelers. Taken together, these chapters offer a deeper understanding of issues that can only become more important as the world becomes smaller and our global family larger. Among the topics featured: Intergroup relationship and empathy for others' pain: a social neuroscience approach. The neuroscience of bilingualism: cross-linguistic influences and cognitive effects. Cross-cultural reading the mind in the eyes and its consequences for international relations. Implications of behavioral and neuroscience research for cross-cultural training. Intercultural relations and the perceptual brain: a cognitive neuroscience perspective. How social dynamics shape our understanding of reality. With its elegant perspectives and empirical depth, Neuroscience in Intercultural Contexts is a forward-looking reference for researchers in the cultural sciences (cross-cultural psychologists, anthropologists, etc.) and in social, affective, and cognitive neuroscience.

Book Preliminary Injunctions Germany England Wales Italy and France

Download or read book Preliminary Injunctions Germany England Wales Italy and France written by Torsten Frank Koschinka and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every legal system, at the outset of court proceedings, has rules aimed at safeguarding parties' interests during the time needed to obtain a judgment on the merits. However, as the European Commission put the case in a 1997 communication, 'a comparative survey of national legislation reveals that there are virtually no definitions of provisional/protective measures and that the legal situations vary widely. The only convergence that can be ascertained is between the function of such measures.' Recognizing that after almost twenty years the issues noted by the Commission have not found a satisfactory solution, here at last is a book that collects and compares the ideas behind the 'preliminary injunction' (an expression the authors use as a general term for a great variety of provisional and precautionary measures) with an eye to defining and organizing this small but very important aspect of the law. Although the analysis touches on relevant measures from many countries, the authors focus on the national legislation in four EU Member States – England, France, Germany, and Italy – to highlight the nature of the differences these kinds of measures entail. They compare and contrast such aspects as the following: – differences in civil procedure; - the types of measures that may be taken; - the terms on which preliminary injunctions, which are normally directly enforceable, may be ordered by a court; - the kind of assets that may be affected; - the relationship between proceedings in an interlocutory action and proceedings on the substance; - necessity of credible evidence that immediate and irreparable injury, loss, or damage will result if no preliminary injunction is granted; and - the role of protective measures in summary proceedings. The study also describes and examines the recent European order for payment (EC Regulation No. 1896/2006), the most significant existing transnational instrument aimed at granting preliminary protection of creditors' rights. This incomparable book represents a major contribution to a growing debate, particularly in Europe, on ways and means of securing equivalent protection for all litigants. Given the variety of legal systems and of measures available, the debate will have to focus on the functions served by provisional/protective measures, the minimum conditions to be satisfied, the adversary procedure requirement, the enforceability of the measures, and possible redress procedures. There is no more thorough and reliable resource available to clarify these issues for practitioners and interested policymakers everywhere.

Book Building and Using the Siarad Corpus

Download or read book Building and Using the Siarad Corpus written by Margaret Deuchar and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a research monograph divided into two parts. The first part describes the methods used to build the first sizeable corpus of informal conversational data collected from bilingual speakers of Welsh and English: Siarad. The second part describes the linguistic analysis of data from this corpus (available at bangortalk.org.uk). The information in Part One will be useful as a ‘how to’ manual on building a bilingual spoken corpus, including methods of data collection, transcription, glossing and analysis. The findings reported in Part Two throw new light on the debate regarding code-switching vs. borrowing, the application of the Matrix Language Framework (MLF) to the grammar of Welsh-English code-switching, the extralinguistic factors influencing variation in quantity of code-switching, and the extent to which the grammar of Welsh is changing in contact with English. Additional findings by other researchers using the corpus are also reported, and possible future directions are discussed.

Book With Your Words in My Hands

Download or read book With Your Words in My Hands written by Sonia Cancian and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-04-07 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following Antonietta and Loris's first kiss in the shadows of the Italian Alps barely a year after the end of the Second World War, the couple was divided by a distance far greater than could ever have been imagined. With Antonietta's family moving to Montreal, migration entered the couple's intimate worlds, stretching the distance between them from the two hundred kilometres separating Ampezzo and Venice to the ocean between Montreal and Venice. Throughout their transatlantic separation, the young lovers fervidly wrote each other until they were reunited in Canada in 1949. With Your Words in My Hands tells a story about love and migration as written and read, idealized and imagined, through daily correspondence. Sonia Cancian recovers a rare complete epistolary record of an immigrant experience defined by love and sustained in writing, translating the letters with deftness and an ear for the immediacy of emotion and longing they embody. Cancian gives context to these exchanges dating from the beginning of the largest migration movement from Italy to Canada, showing how love, frustration, fear, sadness, and empathy were palpable elements that inflected the quotidian – bureaucratic processes, employment, family life – and defined immigrant experience. For the countless couples whose love is fragmented by separation but woven together with envelopes and stamps, or onscreen in today's instant messaging, these letters remind us how the experience of distance and proximity, absence and presence, can be reconfigured within the world of intimate correspondence.
