Download or read book By Grace Alone written by Donald J. Bruggink and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story begins in Europe, with a brief history of the church out of which the Reformation grew. The scene then shifts to New Amsterdam in 1628, where a miniscule church survived the English conquest and eventually grew into the Reformed Church in America. By Grace Alone follows its story into the twenty-first century. In addition to the sequential story of the Reformed Church's development, there are vignettes of people involved in events small and great - from the diary of a frail young woman who survived near calamity at sea but ended her life at eighty-one, the widow of the president of Queen's College, to the boy from a farm in Iowa who built the Crystal Cathedral. The reader will also be helped by timelines in every chapter, as well as a glossary, an index, and many illuminating illustrations.

Download or read book Lutherans of Cole County Missouri written by Jeremy Amick and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Houses Lutherans Built Large groups of German immigrants began arriving in Cole County in the 1830s. By 1843, thirty-seven of them banded together to establish the first Lutheran church in the county--Zion Church. The following year, the second Lutheran church was founded near Taos, while the pastors at Zion helped establish a third congregation in Lohman in the 1850s. Doctrinal disputes inspired members to leave the church in Lohman and establish a new Lutheran congregation in Stringtown after the Civil War. Over the generations, Zion--the "Mother Church"--disbanded but other Lutheran congregations developed in Centertown, Honey Creek, Russellville, Jefferson City and near Brazito. Local author Jeremy Amick details the rich history of Lutherans in Cole County.

Download or read book Church at Church written by Ronald Andrew Rienstra and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consider: -The church both learns and becomes what it truly is when it gathers to worship. -Worship tells the story of God's salvation history and invites God's people into it. -By doing so, the church offers the world both a stern warning and a hopeful promise. These are three of the key insights that animated the work of Jean-Jacques von Allmen, a Swiss Reformed pastor and professor who is among the most admired liturgical theologians of the twentieth century. Yet his work is largely and lamentably unknown to most worship leaders. In this book, Ron Rienstra provides an introduction to this important thinker. He offers methodological and biographical context and then explores von Allmen's most generative insights concerning the church as it engages in its most foundational activity: worship. Viewed through the lens of the Nicene marks, Rienstra's exploration yields the outlines of a "liturgical ecclesiology": a way to help the church think more deeply about its identity and to help its leaders shape the worship they prepare and lead today.
