Book excerpt: Cultural modernity has habitually been defined as a focus on the means of representation themselves, as opposed to art that imitates external reality or expresses its maker's inner life. The crucial moment is usually considered the emergence of Edouard Manet in mid-nineteenth-century France, and the features of French developments have been seen as defining terms in the theory of modernity. However, recent art and cultural history have often spoken of plural modernities, distinct from the pattern set in France. For the first time, this study in cultural history explores how Spanish culture took a radical turn toward the medium of representation itself in the 1850s and early 1860s. It argues that this happened in a way that is critically at odds with many fundamental theoretical suppositions about modernity.

Written histories invariably record the Spanish financing of Columbus’s historic voyage of 1492, but few consider Spain’s continuing influence on the development of U.S. national identity. In this book, M. Elizabeth Boone investigates the reasons for this problematic memory gap by chronicling a series of Spanish displays at international fairs. Studying the exhibition of paintings, the construction of ephemeral architectural space, and other manifestations of visual culture, Boone examines how Spain sought to position itself as a contributor to U.S. national identity, and how the United States—in comparison to other nations in North and South America—subverted and ignored Spain’s messages, making it possible to marginalize and ultimately obscure Spain’s relevance to the history of the United States. Bringing attention to the rich and understudied history of Spanish artistic production in the United States, “The Spanish Element in Our Nationality” recovers the “Spanishness” of U.S. national identity and explores the means by which Americans from Santiago to San Diego used exhibitions of Spanish art and history to mold their own modern self-image.

Vinculados en su mayoría a las tendencias academicistas, el empuje de las vanguardias los sumió, ya entrado el siglo XX, en un prolongado olvido. El conjunto de su obra, sin embargo, no puede ser desestimado, pues, en su nutrida diversidad, ofrece valores propios de gran calidad y constituye el sustrato sobre el que iba a germinar la que luego se conocería como “escuela española de París”. Propósito principal de este libro es censar y reseñar, dando a conocer algunas de sus obras más representativas, a un amplio número de pintores españoles que, durante temporadas más o menos largas, residieron en París a lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Salvando notorias excepciones, estos pintores conocieron en su mayoría, ya entrando el siglo XX, un prolongado olvido, del que no hace mucho empiezan a ser rescatados. El conjunto de su obra, sin embargo, no puede ser desdeñado, pues testimonia acerca de un período de extraordinaria vitalidad en la historia de la pintura española, objeto por aquel entonces de una profunda renovación debida en gran medida a la poderosa influencia ejercida por la capital francesa. Este libro se propone contribuir al estudio y a la clarificación de dicho período, sirviéndose de un extenso caudal de informaciones inéditas y apoyándose en un importante conjunto de ilustraciones.
