Book Kurt Vonnegut Remembered

Download or read book Kurt Vonnegut Remembered written by Jim O'Loughlin and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of reminiscences that illuminate the career and private life of the iconic author of 'Slaughterhouse-Five' Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007), who began his writing career working for popular magazines, held both literary aspirations and an attraction to genre fiction. His conspicuous refusal to respect literary boundaries was part of what made him a countercultural icon in the 1960s and 1970s. Vonnegut's personal life was marked in large part by public success and private turmoil. Two turbulent marriages, his sudden adoption of his late sister's four children (and the equally sudden removal of one of those children), and a mid-eighties suicide attempt all signaled the extent of Vonnegut's inner troubles. Yet, he was a generous friend to many, maintaining close correspondences throughout his life. Kurt Vonnegut Remembered gathers reminiscences--by those who knew him intimately, and from those met him only once--that span Vonnegut's entire life. Among the anecdotes in this collection are remembrances from his immediate family, reflections from his comrades in World War II, and tributes from writers he worked with in Iowa City and from those who knew him when he was young. Editor Jim O'Loughlin offers biographical notes on Vonnegut's relationship with each of these figures. Since Vonnegut's death, much has been written on his life and work, but this new volume offers a more generous view of his life, particularly his last years. In O'Loughlin's introduction to the volume, he argues that we can locate and understand Vonnegut's best self through his public persona, and that in his performance as the kind and humane figure that many of the speakers here knew him as, Vonnegut became a better person than he ever felt himself to be.

Book The Child and the World

Download or read book The Child and the World written by Jana Tabak and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: However unthinkable child-soldiers may be within a generalized conception of childhood, they are not imaginary figures; rather, they are a constant in almost every armed conflict around the world. The participation of children in wars may question the idea of childhood as a "once-upon-a-time story with a happy and predictable ending," disrupting the (natural) idea of a protected and innocent childhood and also eliciting fear, uncertainty, revulsion, horror, and sorrow. Using the perspectives of both childhood studies and critical approaches to international relations, Jana Tabak explores the constructions of child-soldiers as "children at risk" and, at the same time, risky children. More specifically, The Child and the World aims both to problematize the boundaries that articulate child-soldiers as necessarily deviant and pathological in relation to "normal" children and to show how these specific limits participate in the (re)production and promotion of a particular version of the international political order. In this sense, the focus of this work is not on investigating child-soldiers' lives and experiences per se but on their presumed threatening feature as they depart from the protected territory of childhood, disquieting everyday international life.

Book A Contemporary History of Women s Sport Part One

Download or read book A Contemporary History of Women s Sport Part One written by Jean Williams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an historical survey of women’s sport from 1850-1960. It looks at some of the more recent methodological approaches to writing sports history and raises questions about how the history of women’s sport has so far been shaped by academic writers. Questions explored in this text include: What are the fresh perspectives and newly available sources for the historian of women’s sport? How do these take forward established debates on women’s place in sporting culture and what novel approaches do they suggest? How can our appreciation of fashion, travel, food and medical history be advanced by looking at women’s involvement in sport? How can we use some of the current ideas and methodologies in the recent literature on the history and sociology of sport in order to look afresh at women’s participation? Jean Williams’s original research on these topics and more will be a useful resource for scholars in the fields of sports, women’s studies, history and sociology.

Book Sports Highlights

Download or read book Sports Highlights written by Ray Gamache and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-09-07 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This expanded second edition traces the development and popularity of the sportscast highlight--the dominant news frame in the crowded medium of electronic sports journalism--as the primary means of communicating about sports and athletes. The book explores the intricate relationships among media producers, sports leagues and organizations, and audiences, and explains that sportscast highlights are not a recent development. They were often used within a news context in every medium--from early news film actualities and newsreels to network and cable television to today's new media platforms. New to this edition are three chapters that explore developments in sports media from cultural, economic and technological perspectives. An obsession with highlights has seen video replay increasingly used to adjudicate sporting events, marking a new level of reliance on technology. The media's quest for greater certitude and integrity corresponds with the rise of sponsorship of pro teams by gambling operators--with sports betting ads and on-screen odds now routinely appearing in sportscasts. Long-form sports documentaries have become popular, often highlighting a fascination with "firsts"--rooted in notions of human conquest over nature--that has remained an important source of sports mythmaking.

Book 1968 Vietnam Letters and Memories of a Marine

Download or read book 1968 Vietnam Letters and Memories of a Marine written by Marlene Marchaesi and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-04-03 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anything is pretty much possible if you dream it, you can have it. That is, unless war is a factor. This is a narrative, true story of a young girl who grew up in a poor, dysfunctional family in Upstate New York, and lives mostly in a dream world as a means to escape her mundane life. Probably not such a unique story. But she is unique in that she does something about it she doesnt wait for things to happen, or anyone else to be in control of her destiny --she takes the reins. Through enthusiasm and guts, she manages to live the life shes always dreamed about -- to travel, to see the world. Its 1967 and at the inexperienced age of 20, she leaves her home in New York to work in Great Britain as a domestic, where she stays for nearly two years. She gets there on a one-way ticket, working papers, $100, and the determination to see what the real Europe is like -- not through the eyes of a tourist who only visits for a couple of weeks. She comes out of this experience not only with an education that she otherwise never would have had, but some great stories shell be able to pass on to family and friends. But before she leaves on her adventure of a lifetime, she becomes a friend and lover to Peter. He is her first real love and memories of our first usually remain forever. This was no different for Marlene, and she chronicles the way her and Peter kept in touch in 1967 and 1968 with their letters. And after experiencing some great highs during her two years abroad, she returns home with a heavy heart, as Peter has become a casualty of the Vietnam War the day the letters stopped. A starry-eyed, adventurous young girl, still rather nave when she left home, returns having aged a lot more than she bargained for. In the end however, she would come to realize that certain people enter your life for a reason. She was lucky enough to let Peter into hers, as he has been such a positive influence for over 40 years. This book contains the actual letters Peter wrote to Marlene and her recollections of what she wrote back to him, with no embellishments. Although the book deals with the Vietnam Era, anyone who has friends or relatives serving in the military today will relate to the story.
