Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetric designs are an important class of combinatorial structures which arose first in the statistics and are now especially important in the study of finite geometries. This book presents some of the algebraic techniques that have been brought to bear on the question of existence, construction and symmetry of symmetric designs - including methods inspired by the algebraic theory of coding and by the representation theory of finite groups - and includes many results. Rich in examples and containing over 100 problems, the text also provides an introduction to many of the modern algebraic approaches used, through six lengthy appendices and supplementary problems. The book will be of interest to both combinatorialists and algebraists, and could be used as a course text for a graduate course.

Download or read book Combinatorics written by M. Hall Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorics has come of age. It had its beginnings in a number of puzzles which have still not lost their charm. Among these are EULER'S problem of the 36 officers and the KONIGSBERG bridge problem, BACHET's problem of the weights, and the Reverend T.P. KIRKMAN'S problem of the schoolgirls. Many of the topics treated in ROUSE BALL'S Recreational Mathe matics belong to combinatorial theory. All of this has now changed. The solution of the puzzles has led to a large and sophisticated theory with many complex ramifications. And it seems probable that the four color problem will only be solved in terms of as yet undiscovered deep results in graph theory. Combinatorics and the theory of numbers have much in common. In both theories there are many prob lems which are easy to state in terms understandable by the layman, but whose solution depends on complicated and abstruse methods. And there are now interconnections between these theories in terms of which each enriches the other. Combinatorics includes a diversity of topics which do however have interrelations in superficially unexpected ways. The instructional lectures included in these proceedings have been divided into six major areas: 1. Theory of designs; 2. Graph theory; 3. Combinatorial group theory; 4. Finite geometry; 5. Foundations, partitions and combinatorial geometry; 6. Coding theory. They are designed to give an overview of the classical foundations of the subjects treated and also some indication of the present frontiers of research.

Download or read book Parallelisms of Complete Designs written by Peter J. Cameron and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1976-06-10 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes present an investigation of a condition similar to Euclid's parallel axiom for subsets of finite sets. The background material to the theory of parallelisms is introduced and the author then describes the links this theory has with other topics from the whole range of combinatorial theory and permutation groups. These include network flows, perfect codes, Latin squares, block designs and multiply-transitive permutation groups, and long and detailed appendices are provided to serve as introductions to these various subjects. Many of the results are published for the first time.

Download or read book Coding Theory and Quantum Computing written by David Evans and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conference, Coding Theory and Quantum Computing, was held in Charlottesville, VA, to provide an opportunity for computer scientists, mathematicians, and physicists to interact about subjects of common interest. This proceedings volume grew out of that meeting. It is divided into two parts: "Coding Theory" and "Quantum Computing". In the first part, Harold Ward gives an introduction to coding theory. Other papers survey recent important work, such as coding theory applications of Grobner bases, methods of computing parameters of codes corresponding to algebraic curves, and problems in the theory of designs. The second part of the book covers a wide variety of directions in quantum information with an emphasis on understanding entanglement. The material presented is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in coding theory and in quantum computing.

Download or read book Symmetry in Graphs written by Ted Dobson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length book on the major theme of symmetry in graphs. Forming part of algebraic graph theory, this fast-growing field is concerned with the study of highly symmetric graphs, particularly vertex-transitive graphs, and other combinatorial structures, primarily by group-theoretic techniques. In practice the street goes both ways and these investigations shed new light on permutation groups and related algebraic structures. The book assumes a first course in graph theory and group theory but no specialized knowledge of the theory of permutation groups or vertex-transitive graphs. It begins with the basic material before introducing the field's major problems and most active research themes in order to motivate the detailed discussion of individual topics that follows. Featuring many examples and over 450 exercises, it is an essential introduction to the field for graduate students and a valuable addition to any algebraic graph theorist's bookshelf.
