Book Magnetic Fields Special Relativity and Potential Theory

Download or read book Magnetic Fields Special Relativity and Potential Theory written by B. H. Chirgwin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic Fields, Special Relativity and Potential Theory is an introduction to electromagnetism, special relativity, and potential theory, with emphasis on the magnetic field of steady currents (magnetostatics). Topics covered range from the origin of the magnetic field and the magnetostatic scalar potential to magnetization, electromagnetic induction and magnetic energy, and the displacement current and Maxwell's equations. This volume is comprised of five chapters and begins with an overview of magnetostatics, followed by a chapter on the methods of solving potential problems drawn from electrostatics, magnetism, current flow, and gravitation. Relaxing the constraint of stationary steady currents, the next chapter considers electromagnetic induction when the current strengths in closed circuits vary or when the circuits move. This leads to the necessity of assessing the breakdown of Newtonian ideas and the introduction of special relativity. When the constraint of closed circuits is further relaxed and the motion of charges in open circuits is taken into account, the discussion turns to displacement current because of the relativistic theory already set up, leading to Maxwell's equations. This book will be a valuable resource for undergraduate students of physics.

Book The Principles of Electromagnetic Theory and of Relativity

Download or read book The Principles of Electromagnetic Theory and of Relativity written by M.-A. Tonnelat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this work is to study the principles upon which the classical and relativistic theories of the electromagnetic and gravitational fields are based. Thus, the primary object of the book is to present a simple exposition of Maxwell's theory, of General Relativity and of the link between those two concepts, namely, Special Relativity. In the nineteenth century the notion of a continuous field gradually replaced the idea of action at a distance. The electromagnetic theory that was elaborated at that time covers a very large area of Physics, since it makes possible the description of permanent phenomena, electrostatics and magnetostatics, as well as of variable phenomena. It anticipates the existence of waves, and thereby the theory of light is annexed to this vast domain. It was discovered that Maxwell's equations changed their form when they were related to reference systems associated with two observers in rectilinear uniform motion with respect to each other and each endowed with the absolute time required by classical mechanics. This was a most remarkable fact. Indeed, as soon as attempts were made to verify the results of classical kinematics by means of experiments with the propa gation of light, there arose a whole series of contradictions.

Book Theories of Matter Space and Time

Download or read book Theories of Matter Space and Time written by Nick Evans and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book and its sequel (Theories of Matter Space and Time: Quantum Theories) are taken from third and fourth year undergraduate Physics courses at Southampton University, UK. The aim of both books is to move beyond the initial courses in classical mechanics, special relativity, electromagnetism, and quantum theory to more sophisticated views of these subjects and their interdependence. The goal is to guide undergraduates through some of the trickier areas of theoretical physics with concise analysis while revealing the key elegance of each subject. The first chapter introduces the key areas of the principle of least action, an alternative treatment of Newtownian dynamics, that provides new understanding of conservation laws. In particular, it shows how the formalism evolved from Fermat's principle of least time in optics. The second introduces special relativity leading quickly to the need and form of four-vectors. It develops four-vectors for all kinematic variables and generalize Newton's second law to the relativistic environment; then returns to the principle of least action for a free relativistic particle. The third chapter presents a review of the integral and differential forms of Maxwell's equations before massaging them to four-vector form so that the Lorentz boost properties of electric and magnetic fields are transparent. Again, it then returns to the action principle to formulate minimal substitution for an electrically charged particle.

Imagine his own feelings when the partial differential equations he formulated spread in the form of polarized waves with the speed of light! This change in the understanding of the structure of reality is the most profound and fruitful that has come to physics since Newton."--Albert Einstein
