Book Percy Bysshe Shelley

Download or read book Percy Bysshe Shelley written by James Bieri and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Shelley found a retreat on the Bay of Lerici where, joined by his friends Edward and Jane Williams, he sailed his new boat and confided darkening thoughts to Edward Trelawny. Shelley's love lyrics to Jane, his last inamorata, were written as he composed his final great work, The Triumph of Life, broken off by his untimely drowning, a controversial sailing tragedy that is considered here in detail. Shelley's fascinating posthumous life is narrated in the subsequent intermingled lives of the poet's most intimate associates."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Coleridge and Shelley

Download or read book Coleridge and Shelley written by Dr Sally West and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sally West's timely study is the first book-length exploration of Coleridge's influence on Shelley's poetic development. Beginning with a discussion of Shelley's views on Coleridge as a man and as a poet, West argues that there is a direct correlation between Shelley's desire for political and social transformation and the way in which he appropriates the language, imagery, and forms of Coleridge, often transforming their original meaning through subtle readjustments of context and emphasis. While she situates her work in relation to recent concepts of literary influence, West is focused less on the psychology of the poets than on the poetry itself. She explores how elements such as the development of imagery and the choice of poetic form, often learnt from earlier poets, are intimately related to poetic purpose. Thus on one level, her book explores how the second-generation Romantic poets reacted to the beliefs and ideals of the first, while on another it addresses the larger question of how poets become poets, by returning the work of one writer to the literary context from which it developed. Her book is essential reading for specialists in the Romantic period and for scholars interested in theories of poetic influence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Percy Bysshe Shelley to William Godwin, Vol. 1 of 2 The name of Godwin has been used to excite in me feelings of reverence and admiration. I have been accus tomed to consider him a luminary too dazzling for the darkness which sur rounds him From the earliest period of my knowledge of his principles, I have ardently desired to share, on the footing of intimacy, that intellect which I have delighted to contemplate in its emanations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Vol. 1: Containing Material Never Before Collected Mr. William Michael Rossetti may be regarded as the first systematic editor of Shelley's poetry. His Memoir of Shelley is packed with valuable criticism of the poet's life, and has for forty years remained an authority I have to thank him for a most interesting note on Shelley's early friend, Edward Graham. To Mr. Rossetti I further am indebted for the use of his chronology of Shelley's letters to Hogg, which, with one or two exceptions. Book Apocalypse and Millennium in English Romantic Poetry

Download or read book Apocalypse and Millennium in English Romantic Poetry written by Morton D. Paley and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999-10-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interrelationship of the ideas of apocalypse and millennium is a dominant concern of British Romanticism. The Book of Revelation provides a model of history in which apocalypse is followed by millennium, but in their various ways the major Romantic poets - Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Keats, and Shelley - question and even at times undermine the possibility of a successful secularization of this model. No matter how confidently the sequence of apocalypse and millennium seems to be affirmed in some of the major works of the period, the issue is always in doubt: the fear that millennium may not ensue emerges as a significant, if often repressed, theme in the great works of the period. Related to it is the tension in Romantic poetry between conflicting models of history itself: history as teleology, developing towards end time and millennium, and history as purposeless cycle. This subject-matter is traced through a selection of works by the major poets, partly through an exposition of their underlying intellectual traditions, and partly through a close examination of the poems themselves.
