Book Historical Dictionary of Morocco

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Morocco written by Aomar Boum and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 1003 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical reference work on Morocco must take as its subject al-maghrib al-aqsa (the far west) as the Arabic scholars have generally referred to the approximate region of present-day Morocco, roughly the north-west corner of Africa but at times including much of the Iberian peninsula, because the modern nation-state is a relatively recent creation owing much to events in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. External influences on Morocco tend to come across the narrow straits of Gibraltar to the north, from the east along the Mediterranean litoral, or up from the Sahara. In each case, access is constrained by geography and continued control from outside the region has been difficult to manage over the long term. Although many of the dynasties that came to power in Morocco conquered much broader regions, history and topology have so conspired that there is still more coherence to an historical focus on al-maghrib al-aqsa than is the case for most modern nation-states. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Morocco contains a chronology, an introduction, a glossary, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Morocco.

Book Genealogies of Orientalism

Download or read book Genealogies of Orientalism written by Edmund Burke and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orientalism, as explored by Edward Said in 1978, was a far more complex phenomenon than many suspected, being homogenous along the lines of neither culture nor time. Instead, it is deeply embedded in the collective reimaginings that were?and are?nationalism. The dozen essays in Genealogies of Orientalism argue that the critique of orientalism, far from being exhausted, must develop further. To do so, however, a historical turn must be made, and the ways in which modernity itself is theorized and historicized must be rethought. ø According to Joan W. Scott, author of The Politics of the Veil, the essays in this collection ?develop a remarkable perspective on Edward Said?s Orientalism, placing it in a long historical context of critiques of colonial representations, and deepening our understanding of the very meaning of modernity.? Looking beyond the usual geography of colonial theory, this work broadens the focus from the Middle East and India to other Asian societies. By exploring orientalism in literary and artistic representations of colonial subjects, the authors illuminate the multifaceted ways in which modern cultures have drawn on orientalist images and indigenous self-representations. It is in this complex, cross-cultural collision that the overlapping of orientalism and nationalism can be found.

Book Catholic Missionaries in Early Modern Asia

Download or read book Catholic Missionaries in Early Modern Asia written by Nadine Amsler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent decades, historians have become increasingly interested in early modern Catholic missions in Asia as laboratories of cultural contact. This book builds on recent ground-breaking research on early modern Catholic missions, which has shown that missionaries in Asia cooperated with and accommodated the needs of local agents rather than being uncompromising promoters of post-Tridentine doctrine and devotion. Bringing together some of the most renowned and innovative researchers from Anglophone countries and continental Europe, this volume investigates how missionaries’ entanglements with local societies across Asia contributed to processes of localization within the early modern Catholic church. The focus of the volume is on missionaries’ adaptation to four ideal-typical social settings that played an eminent role in early modern Asian missions: (1) the symbolically loaded princely court; (2) the city as a space of especially dense communication; (3) the countryside, where missionary presence was only rarely permanent; (4) and the household – a central arena of conversion in early modern Asian societies. Shining a fresh light onto the history of early modern Catholic missions and the early modern Eurasian cultural exchange, this will be an important book for any scholar of religious history, history of cultural contact/global history and early modern history in Asia. Chapter 8 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Book The Bewildered Herd

Download or read book The Bewildered Herd written by B. A. Taleb and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a work that contains all that should be known about the media's orientation of the public mind in democratic societies, why this manipulation takes place, and in what manner. The Bewildered Herd does not only analyse the media's current functions and forms in human society but it also traces and discusses the various transformations that this increasingly powerful social actor has gone through. The case study used for the purposes of this work is both unequal and unique in its nature, depth, and revelations. It compares the media's coverage in two of the world's leading democracies (The United States and France) of two of the world's most important armed conflicts and crises. It analyses both countries national, economic, cultural, and social interests as well as their respective media's coverage of these two conflicts and reveals how public perceptions are affected by this coverage and how the agendas of both the media and the political establishment is best served by this manipulation of public opinion in democratic societies. Mechanisms and tactics used in conditioning the public are extensively revealed and analysed in a manner that is so comprehensive in its approach and in its explanations.
