Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes Regenerative Sanitation as the next era of sanitation management and attempts to provide a foundation for the study of sanitation on the premise that sanitation is a complex and dynamic system that comprises of social-ecological, technological and resource systems. The preconception is that sanitation will deliver maximal benefits to society only when there exists a cyclical integration of the three subsystems to enable appropriate linkages between ‘technological design’ and the ‘delivery platform’ so as to achieve optimal and sustained sani-solutions. It also calls for the rethinking of sanitation to change the narrative towards more progressive trajectories such as resource recovery and reuse rather than just amelioration. It explores the contributions to food security, livelihood support, urban regeneration, rural development and even local economies. A new paradigm, theory and ten principles for ensuring practical and effective sanitation solutions and management is presented. In addition is a unique conceptual framework applicable to both developed and developing countries, and to all stages, processes and cycles of delivering sanitation solutions that could critically evaluate, analyse and provide credible, adequate and appropriate sanitation solutions. All of which culminates in a strategic and practical application platform called ‘Sanitation 4.0’ that advocates for total rejuvenation and comprehensive overhaul with eight key strategic considerations for the implementation. Regenerative Sanitation: A New Paradigm For Sanitation 4.0 is inter and trans- disciplinary and encourages collaboration between engineers, scientists, technologists, social scientists and others to provide effective and practical user-centred solutions. It includes relevant case studies, examples, exercise and future research recommendations. It is written as both a textbook for researchers and students as well as a practitioners’ guide for policymakers and professionals.

Book Global Issues in Water Sanitation and Health

Download or read book Global Issues in Water Sanitation and Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-10-25 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the human population grows-tripling in the past century while, simultaneously, quadrupling its demand for water-Earth's finite freshwater supplies are increasingly strained, and also increasingly contaminated by domestic, agricultural, and industrial wastes. Today, approximately one-third of the world's population lives in areas with scarce water resources. Nearly one billion people currently lack access to an adequate water supply, and more than twice as many lack access to basic sanitation services. It is projected that by 2025 water scarcity will affect nearly two-thirds of all people on the planet. Recognizing that water availability, water quality, and sanitation are fundamental issues underlying infectious disease emergence and spread, the Institute of Medicine held a two-day public workshop, summarized in this volume. Through invited presentations and discussions, participants explored global and local connections between water, sanitation, and health; the spectrum of water-related disease transmission processes as they inform intervention design; lessons learned from water-related disease outbreaks; vulnerabilities in water and sanitation infrastructure in both industrialized and developing countries; and opportunities to improve water and sanitation infrastructure so as to reduce the risk of water-related infectious disease.

Book Drinking Water Microbiology

Download or read book Drinking Water Microbiology written by Gordon A. McFeters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microbiology of drinking water remains an important worldwide concern despite modem progress in science and engineering. Countries that are more technologically advanced have experienced a significant reduction in water borne morbidity within the last 100 years: This reduction has been achieved through the application of effective technologies for the treatment, disinfec tion, and distribution of potable water. However, morbidity resulting from the ingestion of contaminated water persists globally, and the available ep idemiological evidence (Waterborne Diseases in the United States, G. F. Craun, ed. , 1986, CRC Press) demonstrates a dramatic increase in the number of waterborne outbreaks and individual cases within the United States since the mid-1960s. In addition, it should also be noted that the incidence of water borne outbreaks of unknown etiology and those caused by "new" pathogens, such as Campylobaeter sp. , is also increasing in the United States. Although it might be debated whether these increases are real or an artifact resulting from more efficient reporting, it is clear that waterborne morbidity cannot be ignored in the industrialized world. More significantly, it represents one of the most important causes of illness within developing countries. Approxi mately one-half the world's population experiences diseases that are the direct consequence of drinking polluted water. Such illnesses are the primary cause of infant mortality in many Third World countries.

Book Health Related Water Microbiology 2000

Download or read book Health Related Water Microbiology 2000 written by R. Morris and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality and quantity of papers given at successive Health-related Water Microbiology Symposia continues to increase and the millennium meeting in Paris saw the highest ever number of delegates and presentations. Of necessity, these selected proceedings can only give a taste of the overall content of the Symposium but nevertheless, reflect on the growing interest and awareness of the importance of the microbial contamination of our environment and the implications for human health. Numerous contributions address different aspects of one of the waterborne diseases of most concern, cryptosporidiosis. However, this did not preclude reports on outbreaks of other diseases. Several contributions raised important questions: how should epidemiological data be interpreted? and what methods are valid for regulatory monitoring? were of particular interest. Newly developed analytical methods have allowed a greater range of pathogens to be detected. However, such techniques have little significance if they cannot be used for the practical evaluation of water quality and part of this is the acquiring of monitoring data upon which future treatment and policy decisions can be made. The 43 papers selected here cover: standards and quality assurance; risk assessment; epidemiology and disease outbreaks; monitoring; microbial survival; disinfection; wastewater treatment; methodology; and microbial toxins.
