Book War in the Persian Gulf

Download or read book War in the Persian Gulf written by Richard Winship Stewart and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2010 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, the Persian Gulf War captured the attention of the world as the first test of the U.S. Army since the Vietnam War and the first large-scale armor engagement since World War II. Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait and his subsequent ouster by the U.S.-led coalition are keys to understanding today's situation in the Middle East. The coalition partnerships cemented in that initial operation and in the regional peacekeeping operations that followed provided the basis for a growing series of multinational efforts that have characterized the post-Cold War environment. Moreover, the growing interoperability of U.S. air, sea, and land forces coupled with the extensive employment of more sophisticated weapons first showcased in Desert Storm have become the hallmark of American military operations and the standard that other nations strive to meet.

Book XVIII Airborne Corps in Desert Storm

Download or read book XVIII Airborne Corps in Desert Storm written by Charles Lane Toomey and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation Desert Storm culminated in a 100-hour ground battle and the ejection of the Iraqi army from Kuwait in February 1991. But the beginning of that victory began in August 1990 when America’s premier contingency force, the Army’s XVIII Airborne Corps, was ordered to Saudi Arabia. This is the story of the XVIII Airborne Corps' epic role in the first Gulf War, from the vulnerable early days of the Desert Shield defense of Saudi Arabia through its Desert Storm attack into Iraq and the Coalition’s "end-sweep" to block Iraqi reinforcement and escape from the Kuwait Theater of Operations. Written by a former officer who was intimately involved with XVIII Airborne Corps planning and execution, this is a history filled with heretofore unrevealed detail and lessons for soldiers, historians and generations to come. From Planning to Victory is destined to become a Gulf War classic. -- Amazon

Book Operation Desert Shield Desert Storm First Infantry Division Ft Riley Kansas

Download or read book Operation Desert Shield Desert Storm First Infantry Division Ft Riley Kansas written by Walter M. Craig and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all know the results of the 2 August, 1991, invasion of Kuwait. As events unfolded, it became clear that some form of U.S. military involvement would be required. Many commanders began immediate planning foreseeing the likely deployment of their units and questions immediately surfaced around the impacts of missions defend or attack. The implied mission of defend appeared to be the initial planning factor. As the commitment of U.S. forces began, a rotation concept was discussed. Most thought a one year rotation would be the likely outcome. In November, the decision was reached to mass sufficient power in the Gulf to allow sufficient flexibility to support an offensive option. Consequently, additional forces were identified and the implementation process began. The First Infantry Division was officially alerted on or about 8 November, 1990. I served as a battalion commander within the division. Sadly, I ruptured a lower disc while in the field on 17 October. 1 had the disc removed on 2 November. Normal recovery for such surgery is nine months to one year. A few days after the surgery, I was informed that I would be replaced after twenty-five months in command as I was non-deployable. The commanding general decided to make me the headquarters commandant since I knew the post and the base support structure plus I was an experienced commander. The Headquarters Command grew into a thirteen company organization of close to two thousand soldiers. It was a mix of active and reserve component units organized to support the post and the deployment.

Book The Road to Safwan

Download or read book The Road to Safwan written by Stephen Alan Bourque and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Road to Safwan is a complete history of the 1st Infantry Divisions cavalry unit fighting in Operation Desert Storm. Stephen A. Bourque and John W. Burdan III served in the 1st Infantry Bourque in Division Headquarters, Burdan as the Operations Officer of the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry. Based on extensive interviews and primary sources, Bourque and Burdan provide the most in-depth coverage to date of a battalion-level unit in the 1991 war, showing how the unit deployed, went into combat, and adapted to changing circumstances. The authors describe how the officers and men moved from the routine of cold war training to leading the Big Red One in battle through the Iraqi defenses and against the Iraqi Republican Guard. The 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry participated in the 1st Brigade attack on G-Day, the large tank battle for Objective Norfolk, the cutting of Basra Road, and the capture of Safwan Airfield, the site where General H. Norman Schwartzkopf conducted cease-fire negotiations with the Iraqis. The squadrons activities are placed squarely within the context of both division and corps activities, which illustrates the fog of war, the chain of command, and the uncertainty of information affecting command decisions. The Road to Safwan challenges the myth that technology won the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Contrary to popular view, it was a soldier's war not much different from previous conflicts in its general nature. What was different was the quality and intensity of the unit's training, which resulted, repeatedly, in successful engagements and objectives secured. It is the story of the people, not the machines, which ultimately led this squadron to the small town of Safwan.
