Book excerpt: George Herbert (1593-1633), the celebrated devotional poet, and his brother Lord Herbert of Cherbury (1583-1648), often described as the father of English deism, are rarely considered together. This collection explores connections between the full range of the brothers’ writings and activities, despite the apparent differences both in what they wrote and in how they lived their lives. More specifically, the volume demonstrates that despite these differences, each conceived of their extended republic of letters as militating against a violent and exclusive catholicity; theirs was a communion in which contention (or disputation) served to develop more dynamic forms of comprehensiveness. The literary, philosophical and musical production of the Herbert brothers appears here in its full European context, connected as they were with the Sidney clan and its investment in international Protestantism. The disciplinary boundaries between poetry, philosophy, politics and theology in modern universities are a stark contrast to the deep interconnectedness of these pursuits in the seventeenth century. Most are adapted from traditional European folk needlework patterns used for clothing and home decoration. This collection is reproduced from German textile designer Friedrich Fischbach's work titled "Stickerei-Muster" (embroidery patterns) published around 1890. The patterns were printed in full color on small cards gathered into portfolios. The original cards measured only a few inches and the charts have been enlarged for easier use. Many of these charts use whole stitches, making them suitable for both needlepoint and cross stitch. Others are worked almost entirely in backstitches to produce airy, ornate patterns of Blackwork-like filigree. Designs charted on graph paper are a universal language, with each square on the pattern representing a single stitch. Basic counted thread stitches begin on page 50, and a page of graph paper is included as an aid to help you create your own projects. These charts are reproduced from the original antiques, and some signs of age and wear will be visible. Antique printing processes were not as clear and accurate as the charts modern stitchers are accustomed to using, and these are not reccomended for novice stitchers. No actual projects are offered, these charts are a collection of borders and motifs that can be used for your own creations. 8-1/2 by 11 inch softcover with 56 pages; 47 pages of full color charts.

Yet the experiences of Indigenous peoples in these urban frontiers have been overshadowed by triumphant narratives of progress. This book explores the lives of Indigenous peoples and settlers in two Pacific Rim cities � Victoria, British Columbia, and Melbourne, Australia. Built on Indigenous lands and overtaken by gold rushes, these cities emerged between 1835 and 1871 in significantly different locations, yet both became cross-cultural and segregated sites of empire. This innovative study traces how these spaces, and the bodies in them, were transformed, sometimes in violent ways, creating new spaces and new polities.
